Pregnant after 35

Should the third pregnancy be THIS painful??

Good morning ladies. I hope everyone is well today. :)   I've posted about my sciatic pain before and I think I've mentioned this low abdominal pain before too. Previously, it was mostly right sided and after my responses here and some googling and talking with my OB.. I chalked it up to RLP.  But seriously I am in so much pain!  I can't take a single step without pain. Every time I move it hurts.  Can RLP really hurt this badly?  I literally lay in bed at night and I'm tearful because it just hurts so bad!  I'm limping around the house like an 80 year old woman!! Worse.. my grandmother is 88 and she's moving around better than I am!  My OB suggested a pregnancy support belt which I haven't purchased because even if I hold my belly.. it still hurts.  I can't sleep at all. All I do is toss and turn and every single move hurts!!

Re: Should the third pregnancy be THIS painful??

  • I'm in pain too. Part of it is RLP, it was terribly painful with my first, to the point that it hurt so bad to walk that I used crutches to hop around! I have other stomach pain too though. It feels like I have a rock in my stomach (it's not hard, it just feels like something doesn't belong in there if that makes sense), I'm almost crampy, and it feels like my intestines are twisted. It hurts so bad most of the day/night. I lay awake at night because of the pain. I mentioned it last time I was at my OB and the MFM and neither seemed concerned as the baby looked just fine. I go back again tomorrow and I will bring it up again. This is my 4th child, third pregnancy, and the first time I've been in so much pain all the time. Between the hives, the constantly running to the bathroom and the stomach pain, this pregnancy has been absolutely miserable so far. And I'm not even halfway there.

  • thinkpink101  That's what I'm worried about.. that the OB will just be like well it's your third so yeah it's uncomfortable.  I had sciatic pain really really bad with my daughter and I've had it this time but usually when I'm moving around it's not awful.. it's the worst in bed at night. but this abdominal pain is killing me!  It hurts really bad. It doesn't feel at all like a labor pain.  I just hurts! Aches.  In fact, I'm at work right now and I had one of my coworkers say hey are you ok.. you look like you're not ok.  And I'm like well... I think I'm ok but I can hardly move! It doesn't help that I park in a structure and there's never any parking except on the lower level and there's no elevator so I have to take 2 flights up stairs up to the elevator and back down them to get to my car.  It takes me forever because I have to go so slow and all I keep thinking is OMG I have 8 more weeks!!

  • I have had a couple days where the RLP was off the hook. You are in single digit weeks now. You got this! Wish I had more positive things to say. But I have been counting down too for similar reasons.

Any chance you can get a temporary handicapped hang tag for your car?  My mom had one that was good for a month when she had issues with her knee.  I would ask your doctor about that.  Seriously.

  • I've thought about the handicap tag.. maybe they can give me that.  That would at least mean I could park on the upper level and not have to climb stairs.

I just called the OB to see if they could get me in today instead of Thursday. They said well no because the dr. is leaving but we could do tomorrow afternoon?  I said ok well nevermind because if you're saying tomorrow afternoon then clearly there's no concern abotu the pain I'm having.  I mean really what's the difference between tomorrow afternoon and Thursday afternoon??  So i said well can you at least find out if there's something else that might work better for pain because at this point I'm popping a tylenol in the morning and a tylenol before bed and it's not doing a damn thing.  I literally did not fall asleep until 4am last night because no matter how I lay.. it hurts.

So she says.. have you tried a chiropractor?  I said for what? for abdominal pain? what's a chiropractor going to do for abdominal pain? She's like oh it's not back pain.. I said well yeah I have sciatica but that's not what's killing me right now.  I'm pretty sure a chiropractor isn't going to do a darn thing for my belly pain.

She said she would call me back.

  • Definately try the maternity band.  Even if holding your stomach doesn't help the band may offer some relief as its tight all around your body.  When I am having a bad pain day I will break out a maternity band and it can help.  Often its not total relief but it helps enough for me to be able to carry on with the day.

The Chiropractor might acutally help too. Sometimes getting your back and hips and legs in line can actually help the abdominal area too.  After I had my second baby I had bad back pain but I also had a lot of abdominal pain.  I went to the dr many times because I was very uncomfortable and just didn't feel good.  I begged them to check and see if maybe some placenta or something had gotton left behind.  (this was like 3, 4 and 5 months postpartum btw).  Eventually I was going to the Chiropractor to help my back and once that was better my abdominal pain went away too.  SO its worth a try maybe.

unfortunately, pains do get worse with each baby.  I used midwifes for my first few children and they always stressed to people to get in as good shape as possible before your next baby.  Especially toning the abdominal/core muscles.  There are special exercises that help close abdominal seperations and pubic bone seperations.  If you will be having more children after this one, definately be strict on core strength before getting pregnant.  It can help a lot!
  • cneiding  The nurse just called back.  She told me to go home this afternoon and take a warm bath and/or lay with a heating pad on low and see if that loosens things up.  She moved my appt. from thursday to Wednesday to make sure my cervix is good. So I just talked to my manager and she said go ahead and go home. Soo.. that's where I'm headed.

That's what's weird! I was in the best shape I've ever been in before this pregnancy. I had just lost all my baby weight from DD.. I was just starting cross fitting.. I worked out 60-90 minutes every single day. I did strength training ALL the time. I had abs.. arms.. all of that. It's long gone now!!  I'll have to start from square one again!!  Obviously, we were thrilled for this surprise bundle but I'm not going to lie.. part of me was like seriously?? I just worked my butt off to get in shape again.. really in shape and now I'm pregnant? lol

  • I don't know what the low abdominal pain is but I'm also having a ton of pain from SPD and scoliosis. The SPD is lower than the low abdoman, it's the front of the crotch. It's really difficult and depressing because there's not much I can do. Extra strength tylenol is like taking tic tacs. I've been going to an obstetric physical therapist, twice weekly acupuncture, prenatal massages, some yoga poses like cat/cow and hip spiraling, using a heating pad... They all work to alleviate pain *a little bit* so I keep doing them. Resting by staying off my feet helps the most. I had to quit work and go on disability a couple weeks ago. I've definitely cried about it many times but the good news is I know it will go away once j have this LO in a month or so.

  • Supersarah77..I wonder if that's what this is. It's like super low. Like where you might feel menstrual cramping. It's not cramping tho. It's just pain. Sharp sometimes. Constant since a few days ago. My OB had me go home from work today and use a heating pad and rest. The heating pad did help some but I think being off my feet has helped more. They moved up my appt from Thursday to a Wednesday. I've also been nauseous a lot lately too. Not sure where that came from. I really hope to make it a few more weeks before being off. I don't want to cut my 12 wks of FMLA short.

It really helped to lay down tho and just rest! Which I never get to do with two other small kids at home.

  • Chiropractors can work on various pressure points that target ligaments, it's not just back issues. Find one who specializes in the Webster technique/pg, and also try to find a personal recommendation. I got massages (covered by my insurance) when I was pg w #2 at my chiro.

My MW told me belts are better if you're on your feet a lot, they aren't comfortable to sit in. And maybe think about prenatal yoga? Relaxation techniques might help w dealing w pain. Hang in there! My hips are already v achy and loose (I'm halfway) w this one, a lot more than w the first two.

  • Thanks everyone. :) I just got back from the OB. They did check my cervix. Long, closed, fine which is great. He said my pubic bone is probably separating which hurts but there's nothing you can do. He said it's just because it's your third pregnancy, you've been pregnant 6 times and the aches and pains are just increased. Then he said please don't punch me. lol Obviously, my first priority is that the baby is fine.. clearly I care more about that than myself but man it does suck.

As I was walking out, the NP caught me and gave me the name of a chiropractor that she sends her pregnant patients to all the time. She said to call and that it would probably really help. She also told me to try sitting on a big exercise ball at home instead of the couch and that it can help loosen everything up.

All I know is that it hurts like hell. The secretary also told me to try sitting on a donut.. that it helped her a lot.

  • I just got back from the OB too. I told him how much pain I was in, which earned me an internal exam to make sure I wasn't in labor. He said everything looked fine but I have to have two u/s next week to check the cervical length. He said the pain could be because all my muscles are already stretched out from earlier pregnancies, or it could be intestinal in which case is won't go away until the baby is born. I hurt so bad pretty much ALL the time :(

  • @thinkpink101 It seriously sucks! I just feel like every move I make hurts. I do want to call this chiropractor.. I'm just not sure when I'll actually have time to go. My son starts soccer next weekend.. baseball starts early May and most of the time I'm the one that has to get kids right after work. I would hate to have to miss more time from work for those appt's too. I'm already at the OB weekly for my Makena injections and bi-weekly for my OB appt's. I switched OB's so I was at least close to work but still. If I have to miss time for the chiro I'm afraid they'll make me use intermittent FMLA and then I'm shortening my leave time. Boo!

I hope we both can find something that helps! I do think the heat really helped me a lot but it's not like I have hours on end to lay on the couch with a heating pad like I did yesterday.
