ok... This is my third, and I have officially been pregnant longer than I ever have... DD1- 38 w 3 days, DD2- 39w 0d, doc told me today that he won't let me go past 41 weeks... I ended up enducing with pitocin with both my daughters and I am trying to avoid induction with this one... His reasoning is that post 41 weeks, there is an increased chance of still birth? I had never heard that... I'm 39w1d and I know that she can still come on her own, but I'm just wondering if yall think I should fight the induction or listen to my doctor!

  • I think you should really consider your doctors recommendation. My doctors office goes by the same guideline. They don't let anyone go past 41 weeks. His reasoning is because there is no benefit for the mom or baby to go beyond 41 weeks. The baby just gets bigger and increased risk of things such as infection, placenta doesn't function as well, etc.

I hope you go into labor before 41 weeks so you don't have to be induced. I hated pitocin as well. Good luck.

  • Listen to your doctor. He has more experience than you in this area.
And as @vbonitto pointed out there are several increased risks and no benefits.
Do a quick google search with reliable resources or go down to your library (if you're up to it) to read some books, and talk to your doctor about your concerns at your next appointment. Listen to what he has to say and don't go in there fighting.
  • 41 weeks is pretty standard for most drs. It sucks to not get to go on your own but it really is dangerous to go too far past your due date
  • My doctor is the same way. He said past 41 weeks the placenta starts to slow down with passing on nutrients to the baby. I'm being induced at 40+5 on Friday and while I hope baby comes on his/her own before then, ya gotta do what ya gotta do!
  • I was able to go to 42 weeks with my first in 2011, but I had to go in and get checked frequently so they could check the amount of fluid, etc. due to increased risk factors. After all that, I still had to get induced :/

  • I also went to 41 + 3 with my second in hopes for a VBAC, but she didn't budge and I had a RCS. In both cases I had to really push for the extra time and they agreed (two different docs because we moved). Obviously if there was cause for concern they wouldn't have agreed. I think you can bring it up with your doc, but ultimately they know best about your specific situation.

  • My Dr with my first had a ten day rule

I would go by your doctor recommendation. I don't particularly enjoy pitocin either :( I was induced with my first after my water broke at 39+6 and 18 hours later I still was not contracting. I really don't want it again but if my doctor thought it for the best I would listen to him. That being said our hospital will let you go 10 days past your due date.
  • Ok thanks ladies... It's been a few years between these pregnancies and I thought that 42 was still standard... Glad to see that it's pretty common now!

  • If you are older, they don't want you going much past 40 weeks. They rates of still birth go up significantly for AMA mothers (particularly if you are over 40 years old). This isn't practiced everywhere, but recent studies support it.
  • I think that your doctor is right in saying that there are a couple risks (very small) associated with waiting until 42 weeks. However, it's really important to be informed about the risks associated with induction. It goes well much of the time, but it increases your chances of fetal distress and c section a lot. I'd say with any decision it's most important to just be informed of both options and then decide based on that. It's so easy to make decisions out of fear when it comes to babies.
  • I appreciate the feedback ladies... I'm only 26 and this is my third pregnancy with no issues at all... I went to the doctor today, met with a different physician within the practice. I explained to her my reservations and why I was wanting to wait... She feels very confident that I will go before we even need to worry about this (I was 4 cm today and 70% effaced), but she is fine with me holding off on induction under the condition that I have an ultrasound on Monday to confirm fluid levels and take a look at everything! I feel very happy by her approach and felt that my opinion was heard and respected!

  • 41w is my doc's rule too.

  • The U.S. Is the only country that does 41 weeks, everywhere else does 42 weeks. My doctor tried to pressure me to induce at 41 and I pushed back. Delivered at 41w + 4d and baby was 7lb even. The nurses were saying how babies gain 1/2 pound a week and if she'd been born on her due date she would've just been 6lbs. Healthy, but that extra pound is healthier. Also my husband and I were both 8lb babies so I believe her due date must've been off. Glad I fought back!
  • I just had number 3 ten days ago and was induced at 41 weeks. If I could do it over again, I would have waited for the baby to be ready on his own. I was 0 Dilated and effaced when I arrived and he was soooo far up. The cervadil and the balloon they use to get your cervix ready are awful. For 2 hours after the balloon the only urination option was a bed pan... And then they put in a catheter. Which is irritating and which you're very aware of... I was in the bed hooked up to machines for so long before petocin/labor started... And there were so many internal exams, so many more than I remember from my other deliveries and they were so painful they had me on the ceiling . In retrospect I wish I had just let nature run it's course.
