Scheduled breech c-section without a position scan

My doctor said we may be looking at an elected c-section because the baby was breech at 37 weeks. She hasn't done an ultra sound to confirm this. I'm actually the one who suggested that I thought the baby was breech, until then my doctor didn't even check. Anyone else know what standard procedure is? I am not sure if my doctor is just being lax and would rather just do a c-section without confirming the baby's position. She told me all three of her kids were c-section so not sure if she is being biased. Thoughts? When does the doctor actually confirm position before confirming I need a c-section?

  • Not sure but definitely request a scan, just feeling on your belly is not enough to determine that! Doctors need guidance from the patients too, they don't know as much as they lead on. I'm a nurse I know

  • At my hospital they check before the c section and if the baby is not breech they will send you home.
  • I would want a scan first to confirm. I definitely would not want an unnecessary c-section.

  • Definitely get an ultrasound. One midwife said that my sisters baby was breech- 5 minutes later one confirmed that it wasnt with a scan. Better to be certain
  • I've been told that I will have an US at 39 weeks to confirm position and make sure everything is okay. As of right now, baby is head down and has been since 32 weeks.
  • My Dr wanted to confirm my babys breech position with ultrasound at 36 weeks . i currently am scheduled for my c section next friday but he still continues to check babies position at every visit. i would definitely want to make sure first but they can tell by checking ur cervix also
  • We'll see what happens tomorrow at the doctor's office. I am going to demand some clearer answers and will post back when I find out. Thanks everyone for trying to help me.
  • I had a c-section 11 days ago, my baby was breech at my last U/S they still did a quick check at the hospital to confirm he was still breech. I would ask to confirm.
  • "Doc - I am not going to consent to elective surgery for a breech delivery unless I see on an ultrasound that baby is in fact breech.  Please get the u/s machine or give me the referral to get the scan done at the u/s office.  Thank you"

  • Yeah no way would I elect to be gutted like a fish without confirmation of breech baby right before if that is not how I want to deliver. I would be hesitant to stay with your doctor. Any second doctors you can get second opinions from in the same office?
  • With my first, I wasn't checked by ultrasound till immediately before surgery.  It was a quick check the top of the uterus see if there was a head and there was so c-section was performed.  Granted with my first I had known she was in the breech position since about 27 weeks when I had an elective ultrasound and I knew exactly where her head was.
  • Thanks everyone. I actually saw a different doctor today because mine is on vacation. She immediately wheeled in the ultrasound machine and confirmed baby is breech. She said I will be scheduled for a c-section towards the end of next week. What a difference between doctors. Kind of makes me disappointed in my regular ob. I feel scared about the surgery and baby. I really need to stop reading up online about c-sections, just freaks me out more.
  • @Tarebear17 --- oh, please don't research the internet. I know that seems silly, beings that that should be one of the main resources but you're always going to find worst case scenarios with the good ones. Instead, talk to friends/family/coworkers who have had c-sections. The majority of the time c-sections go just as planned! Internet research has always done nothing but send my anxiety level even further through the roof. A few weeks ago, one of our friends said to me "try not to worry, women have babies every day. some even in cars, planes and rice fields and you will be in a well-equipped hospital". More importantly, pray to our Father. He protects and performs miracles every single day. Best wishes!
P.S. Glad you got that 2nd opinion and u/s!
  • I'm 39 weeks and we found out 2 weeks ago she was in frank breech position. She still shifts a lot so I'm hoping she finds her way down. I've heard from a lot of friends that their babies flipped last minute, I'd request one last u/s before the C section personally especially if you feel like baby has moved at all. good luck, baby will be here soon no matter how they get out! :)
  • I had my baby on 3-26 as a scheduled csection. He was breech from 26weeks on. The recovery hasn't been as awful as Dr. Google made it out to be.

    Good luck!!
  • To the person referring to a c-section as being "gutted like a fish"..
As a person preparing to go in for a c-section (second time mom) for the safety of me and my baby, you could choose your words a bit better. While I agree that a scan for this person is appropriate, your words are insensitive for those of is requiring this path.
  • I haven't had my baby yet (41w+2d ughhhh) so I don't speak from personal experience. However my mom had my brother naturally (no drugs) and then had a scheduled section for me because I was breech, and my entire adult life she has told me "get a c-section when you have a baby! It's the BEST ever. Don't push a baby out!" I'm of course still hoping to have this baby naturally (I know that is what we all want and how heartbreaking it can be when we see that chance slipping away), but it makes me feel better to know that it's not as horribly scary as Google makes it out to be. One of my best friends had a failed induction that led to c-section and for her second she didn't even contemplate a vbac. I asked her why and she said "the section is sooo easy, why go through the hell of labor if I don't have to?"
So those are just 2 positive stories to hopefully lift your spirits and make you feel a bit better!
