Allergies

My backyard still has snow spots, but somehow my allergies have started. I get super congested ears. I can't remember, is Zyrtec ok? Is there a specific type of Zyrtec?

Re: Allergies

  • The snow melt here is causing my allergies to be overactive as well. I know Claritin and Benadryl are safe. I personally use essential oils. Peppermint oil, lavender oil and lemon oil are all safe and when you combine the 3, they work well as an allergy remedy. I used this before I got pregnant and haven't taken allergy medicine in months. My mistake was slacking off and not using my infuser for a few nights. But after 1 use I am allergy free again. Might be worth looking into.

  • Thanks. So probably dumb question but what is an infuser?

I have horrible allergies too my doc told me zyrtec is fine but stay away from any of them that has a 'd' at the end like zyrtec-d, they have decongestant which you want to avoid.

I asked my doctor about this and she said any allergy meds without a "d" at the end are safe (Claritin vs Claritin D).

    Edit:
SEN27 we must have been posting at the same time!
  • @monicaP I got my infuser on amazon(bc I have a slight Amazon addiction) but it's a small electric container that you put water it, and a couple drops of your essential oils, and it sends a small vapor out on either a continuous or timed schedule. If you look into essential oils they will seem expensive for a small bottle, but they last forever because they are so potent you literally only need 2 drops at a time to last about 8 hours in a diffuser.

  • @seamonkey4 Is there a specific ratio you use of peppermint, lemon, and lavender, or is it just 1:1:1? I'd love to give that a try! It sounds like it'd be great for headaches, too!
  • @Mousemama I use 2 drops of each! I rub peppermint on my temples and nape of my neck when I have a headache. Works great!

You can actually look up pregnancy categories for drugs (FDA). My PCP sees drugs in the "B" list as being safe in the 2nd and 3rd trimester. Zyrtec is in category B, the same as Claratin and Benadyrl. To give you further food for thought, Tylenol is actually category C. There are very few category A drugs in general. I'd ask your doctor about suggested drugs or drug categories.

Just a word of caution, just because something's natural, doesn't make it safe. Arsenic is naturally found in low doses in some edible plants. Arsenic in high, concentrated doses isn't safe. When you use oils or herbs they are found in higher concentrations than they would naturally be for food products.  My OB strongly discourages using any "supplements" and "herbs" as most have not be studied and proven safe by the FDA for use during pregnancy. I agree with her 100%.

  • I have literally the most out of control allergies ever, I had to start taking Claritin today, because I couldn't even leave my bed today because I couldn't open my eyes, couldn't hear, and my throat is extremely sore. I'm taking Claritin and mucinex. That's what my doctor said would be okay to take.
