First pregnancy, confusing pains

Today I am 5 weeks 5 days pregnant, I have been having period like cramping recently which I have read to be common during the early stages however I have had sharp pains in and above my belly button for the past few days. At times it feels like bruising and it only hurts if I knock myself or my clothing rubs, at other times it is a consistent sharp stabbing pain regardless of weather anything is touching it or not. Have any of you ladies experienced anything like this before? Is it normal or something I should be getting looked in to? I did call the midwife yesterday for advice however she told me at this stage they do not consider me pregnant, they would not be able to help me and if I were to start bleeding to call the out of hours Dr as it was Sunday. Any ideas or experiences are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Re: First pregnancy, confusing pains

  • Since you've taken a pregnancy test have you seen the doctor at all? As that would be the first thing to do.
I'm 5wks 1day and have seen the doctor and had Beta's taken and just waiting results. My midwife appointment is 21st April so not understanding the nurses response to 'not considering you being pregnant' as when I told my doctor and requested another urine sample at the doctors, he said that over the counter tests are very sensitive and if it is + then your pregnant.
I tested again a week later after the 1st one and the got a much darker line but still waiting to confirm with blood.

As for the sharp pricks, it's probably your uterus just growing and adjusting to the changes and unless you have severe cramping with bleeding then there should be nothing to worry about but I would def recommend seeing a doctor asap!

All the best and a h&h 9 months to you! >:D<

  • I don't think the nurse meant it the way it was said.  If you haven't yet called your doctor and had them confirm your pregnancy, then they may not "consider" you pregnant.

On the other hand, many doctors don't see patients until closer to week 8 because of the changes of MCing early on.  If something happens at this point, there isn't much they can do for you.  She may meant it in that sense too.

So, sharp pains are common.  All that tissue thickening and muscles changing and your uterus growing can cause pains like that.  Like angelinalambert said above, unless the pains are accompanied by bleeding then you should be fine.

If you are really worried about, call again and ask to be seen.

  • I agree with both the previous posters. I went in for an early scan today (5w4d) and asked about some pain I am having just above my belly button. It kind of feels like cramping or almost like a stitch in my side. The nurse told me I will feel a lot on the lower part of my abdomen and back because of all the stretching and she thought the above the belly button pain was probably gas pain. I hope that makes you feel better.

I can also say I never had pain higher in my stomach for any of my losses and I always had spotting that turned to red bleeding. If you notice any red color don't hesitate to call to be seen to ease your worries.

Thank you all, my Dr will not see me until I have been to my first midwife appt on 23rd April, I will then be referred back to my GP, my drs surgery don't confirm pregnancy, if you believe you are pregnant they advise you to take a trip to the chemist and provide you with the telephone number to register with the maternity unit.. I have taken three tests all of which are positive. As of this moment I have not had any spotting or bleeding but have been keeping a close eye out in case. I think perhaps the midwife I spoke to was just a little grumpy although I was slightly upset with her laughing as she advised me that there was nothing there to be causing me any pain at the moment so there won't be any streching as yet and that my belly button is completely unrelated to my pregnancy, she advised me to take some paracetamol and go back to bed.

I really appreciate you lovely gals giving me some reassurance!
  • Those pains are normal. Everything is stretching! Plus if you get gas, holy cow, both combined are not fun!! Unless your bleeding, I wouldn't worry about a thing! Just relax hun!

Hi ladies! Tonight I ended up in the out of hours surgery as my belly button had started bleeding and oozing, it turns out the pains I've been having behind my belly button are due to an abscess and nothing to do with my pregnancy. I now have enough antibiotics to cure a hippo with tonsillitis! Glad I know what it is and now I can get on with enjoying my normal period like cramps and sore boobies! Thanks for all your advice and reassuring messages!
  • Omg that's crazy glad you're ok
