Taking home baby outfit

Ok ladies, since we will be delivering in August, what outfits were you planning on having for baby? My first was born in December so I'm thinking I definitely won't be needing the whole shebang this time around!!

Were you all just getting cute onesies? Or actual outfits, shirt, pants/shorts? I'm torn because it'll be summer but I don't know if baby will be cold in just a onsie?

We are also team green so anyone know of any cute gender neutral ones? Or should we just get a boy and a girl outfit?

Re: Taking home baby outfit

  • My daughter was born in May and she lived in just onesies, socks, and maybe the little mittens for the first few months of her life.  It was pretty hot and I didn't want to overheat her.  I am envisioning the same for this baby until September really gets underway and then I will start putting her in little sweaters and pants as well.

  • I am team green and I was thinking about a gender neutral onesie or sleeper to come home in. I am actually thinking of packing two, one newborn size and one 0-3 months size since newborn stops at 8lbs.

My daughter was 8lb 1oz and was swimming in the 0-3, 3 months size clothing when she was first born.  We actually had to go out a couple days after she was born to get newborn sized clothing.  I didn't have any since everyone swore I wouldn't need any.  She only really wore them for a couple weeks though.

  • This! Team Green also. I was thinking a gender neutral onsie would be easiest. However, my husband wants to pick out one outfit for each gender and have that in his bag.
  • DS was born in July and we were team green then too- I got a cute onesie in white with the little bees on it, black little pants matching white socks with bees and a little sweeter I had knit. It was all from the gap- one of the very few times I paid full price at the gap but I feel in love and had to have it!!! The day we left the hospital it was +32c however but I knew the car would have the AC on.
I am leaning towards something similar for this baby.
  • I'm putting Bella in a onesie and socks. She will be due sometime in July or August.:) I really want a sailor outfit with just anchors or ac/dc onesie:) this girl is about to rock !!!!
  • We were thinking of just a onesie and maybe some leggings, obviously she won't be outside and everywhere including the hospital is air conditioned.
  • How cute are those pajama pants?!!!
  • I was thinking of something like this but short sleeve. Plus my last name is ray so it would be cute!
  • FTM here. I have a sleeper for our little girl that is long sleeved with booties built in. I don't want to put elastic around her waist because the umbilical cord will likely be sensitive to her at first. Also, even though it will be August and we live in Florida, all the buildings are way over-air conditioned. She's gonna go straight from the hospital to a car with AC on blast, to our home where it will be cool as well.
  • I still have to talk to DH but I'm thinking a cute onsie and maybe some pants and socks for sure a light blanket. He's gonna go from the hospital to the car to home and living in south Texas it's crazy hit and humud.
  • I stressed about this a lot with DS. I picked a cotton cute onesie/overall set in a NB size. He was 7.14 and swimming in it. He ended up coming home in a premee size sleeper. It was fine since like PP said he was in the AC all the time anyway.

He also had a light A&A blanket over him. He was fine. I will probably do the same this time.

  • We have been team green with all 3 pregnancies and always brought one boy outfit and one girl outfit for coming home! It doesn't really matter but that was just my preference.

For my girl outfit I'll probably pick a sundress of some sort, for a boy just a onesie should be good.
  • We live in South central Texas and it's hotter than hot down here in August.  Our DD was born late July and she ended up coming home in a cute little dress with socks, and mittens.  We had a blanket on her in the car and the hospital, but it was entirely too hot for anything more.  This time around, we will probably do the same thing since it worked out so well for us last time and will be even hotter!!

  • I am planning on a sleeper or long sleeves/ pants. Even though it will be hot in August, the only time the baby will be out of air conditioning is going to/ from the car. I remember advice to have the baby in one more layer than you are comfortable in, so long sleeves and pants.
  • Just remember, they say you should dress baby one layer hotter than what you are wearing - so if I am comfortable in short sleeves, I put baby in light long sleeves. While it is hot to us, they are coming out of the little sauna that is our womb and you don't want them to get chilly (even in the dead of summer). Plus as almost everyone has stated, almost every place has AC these days. DS was born in July and we had a sleeper for him, we will be doing the same this time around with DD.

This answered my question! I'm a FTM expecting baby girl on August 30th. We live in Georgia, so it's going to be very hot. I was so confused as to what to put her in to come home! I know she'll have been very toasty for months by then, and I don't want to freeze her or burn her up.....ugh so confusing! Lol
  • @kelseyrayay I'm a Ray too!! Lol
  • Team green here too! We brought my daughter home in the very same pjs my mom brought me home in - they're yellow with booties, long sleeves and a hood. I'm planning on bringing the same outfit for this one as it holds special significance for my family.
  • Do you keep the air temp on 70-75 and just put the kiddo in a long sleeve onesie ? I'm new mom as well and it's confusing as heck. Not sure what to do:(
  • And what about the heat?? Do you just use long sleeve onsei or short sleeve?
  • Every baby is different when it comes to heat tolerance. We will probably bring a sleeper for each sex and a onesie for each sex and see what happens at the hospital (we are team green also). I'll wait and see if LO seems to run hot or cold and dress accordingly. My daughter got really hot in the beginning and was really susceptible to heat rash. Now at 2 though she gets cold really easy and sleeps in fleece sleeps all summer long even though the temp inside is mid to high 70s. Babies are as individual as adults.
  • Ok. Thanks. How do you know if baby is hot or cold? Do you just touch them and see if there face is flushed ??
  • I bought my baby's outfit and cried.
  • @lap018 do you have the name of that shop? I scoured etsy on my phone and can't find it with the search terms. Thanks!!!

Really? I always thought baby's body temperature regulates the same as adults... Hmm.. I may need to rethink..

I really want to get our girl this batman outfit, but I feel like it will be overkill lol. So she'll probably come home in socks and a onesie like my son did (he was a May baby).
  • I have an adorable onesie dress I was thinking of bringing my daughter home in.

Here is a site that goes over it in more detail, but if you take a birthing class they usually talk about this as well: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/diapers-clothing/Pages/Dressing-Your-Newborn.aspx
  • @imahuthnow the shop is called babyspeakboutique it says it's on vacation right now :/ not sure when it will be back :(
  • Thanks! Looks like she reopens in May so I will check back

You will figure it out pretty quick. Usually if too hot, they will look flushed, get little sweat beads on their nose, heat rash with my DD showed up really fast when she got overheated on her chest and upper back, and they will often be generally restless/fussy. If too cold, their little hands/feet will often get a purplish hue and feel cold, they will shiver, and generally be restless/fussy again.

Babies don't regulate temp like adults do, so it takes some adjustment. Dressing babies in layers and having additional options with you (like dressing in a onesie but bringing pants/sweater) is always a good idea particularly in the beginning when you may need to adjust more. You will get used to it. Try not to worry about it too much :)

This is great advice as a FTM! Thank u! I'm sure these words will be in my head after R our baby arrives
  • Team blue! My husband lives in the Dominican Republic and I live in Boston, I was there about two weeks ago and he bought the baby some stuff since he is just as excited as I am, so baby will be wearing one of the onesies he bought with some pants and socks
  • @ginger8484 I've heard the best place to touch is their stomach. It will help you gauge if they are hot or cold. After all, my feet are usually cold even when I'm not!

I'm in AZ and it's really hot here as well. I wouldn't even sadly I'm comfortable in shorts and a tank top. I'm still sweating and very hot. With that being said we will have a romper on our little man on his way home that has tank top sleeves. I will place a blanket over him if the car seems to cool on the way home. We live 5 minutes from the hospital and here in AZ it takes at least 10 minutes for your car to feel a comfortable temperature. My first was born in June and we brought her home in a similar outfit and she was just fine.
  • I have my coming home smocked white dress that is a 0-3 months for a backup. My mom is going to buy a little pink smocked newborn one too. That way we have a backup.
