To register for diapers, or not to register for diapers

DH and I went to Babies R Us to register this weekend--holy cow, was it overwhelming!  We both had minor freakouts of "OMG we have no idea what we're doing", and "OMG how are we ever going to get all this sh!t?!'  Luckily our moments of panic were at different times so we were able to calm each other down!  :)

Anyways, Babies R Us automatically puts A TON of diapers on your registry.  After watching our registry list grow and grow, I'm tempted to go through and remove all the diapers completely.  I figure, diapers are more of a monthly expense and what we really need right off the bat are the other items on the registry (sheets, bottles, diaper bag, humidifier, etc).  Is this a mistake?

On a side note, I've made a mental note that from now on, every baby shower I attend I will buy the least "fun" thing on the registry!  I feel like there are so many essentials that we really need that folks won't buy because it's not cute or fun.  Oh well, I'm just going to count my blessings that someone has been generous enough to throw us shower, and remind myself that our parents raised us without half this stuff!

Re: To register for diapers, or not to register for diapers

  • They automatically put them on?! They did not do this when I registered there (but that was also a few years ago). That is ridiculous, I don't think any store should EVER be allowed to add anything to YOUR registry. Personally, I would remove them, but that is just me. I found we had to try a few brands with DS to find ones that he did not explode out of - Pampers were the only thing that worked! I personally would rather people get other stuff for me that I need/want and then if they choose to get diapers on their own, that is nice. Just my two cents.

  • I don't know why they put them on there for you, they didn't with me last month. We did our registry at Babies r Us and Target. At target we registered for a couple of boxes of Pampers because we are going to try that brand first. The reason we registered for them though is the 15% completion discount we get after the shower. Might as well save a few bucks on a couple of boxes. Plus, if people are thinking about buying a smaller pack of diapers, at least they know what brand we are trying.
  • Take off what they auto-registered for and put on what you want.  I know some people who LOVE giving diapers as a gift, sometimes with a gift card or cash with it.  So I wanted people to know the kind I wanted.

I registered for Pampers Swaddlers but ended up needing to use their sensitive version up through size 2 diapers.

  • I registered at babies r us Friday and they didn't put diapers on the registry. I added a few boxes of each size.

  • I put diapers on my Amazon registry. I registered for Pampers but placed a note that said I would appreciate any brand
  • They didn't put them on for us at babies r us... But we did register for one box each size there and on our Amazon registry
  • I asked my mom and some of my girlfriends that have recently had babies if diapers and wipes were something to put on the registry and she suggested not to.  They all separately told me that most of the guests will bring a box or two of them at the baby shower, but I still kind of want to put them on lol...isn't this all so confusing?

  • Babies R Us does not aoutonatically add the diapers and wipes for you. They offer to add the brands that you want and can calculate an average of how many of each size you will use during the first year. You can choose to add them yourself instead though.
  • As a STM, I am going to throw in my 2 cents and say register for them, even if people bring some usually.. Those early days you are so tired and overwhelmed that running out to buy diapers will be the last thing you want to do. I personally registered for cloth and pampers (the best! Very few poo-splosions with them.. Will not use another brand!)
  • If your a brand specific person I say leave it. If you could care less, remove it. That being said every bottom is different.

I know several people who do a diaper raffle at showers so for someone who has no clue about diapers or babies a little guidance wouldn't hurt.

We put a few boxes on ours.
  • Babies r us also told us we could exchange the diapers if they were on our registry and the wrong size. I don't think all places will let you do that.

  • @deviduke412, it sounds like each Babies R Us store may be different.  The one we went to gave us no option.  They were automatically added to our registry.  On top of that, they added 3 different brands in each size option which I thought was strange.  We of course can edit the registry online afterwards, and opt to remove them, but we were not given that option in store.
