Taking progesterone for the first time...

Hi Ladies!

I'm taking crinone (vaginal progesterone supplements) for the first time. I'm not even 100% sure I ovulated but had a lot of good signs: A +OPK on 4/2, a significant temp decrease on 4/3 w/ EWCM, and a significant temp increase on 4/4. MY OBGYN told me to start the progesterone the day after ovulation, so I started it after I saw my temp rise on 4/4. But I know you can't really confirm O until you've seen at least 3 days of high temps. Now today (4/5) my temp went up even higher but I'm wondering if this is from a true ovulation or if the effects of progesterone are kicking in already. Can just one dose of prog make your temp keep rising? Has anyone taken prog and temped at the same time?

Also, H is wondering if it's okay to still have sex while I'm taking vaginal supplements. Like, does the stuff linger and it will it effect/hurt him?

Basically, I'm just wanting to reach out to others who've taken progesterone and to hear your stories about side effects, temping, etc.

Thanks and enjoy this Easter Sunday!!!

Jill

Re: Taking progesterone for the first time...

  • Sorry, no experience to share.  I would say questions like having sex on progesterone are best for your doctor.  Have you charted before this month? My temp goes all over the place after O, up, down. so I think it's fine that it keeps going up, but again, I don't really know anything about taking progesterone.

  • I have taken the suppositories twice now and I'm not sure if they affected my temps because I started them after a bfp. I'm really not certain if they would give you a big jump before O. Was your jump in the range you are used to seeing for O? If so I would say it sounds like you did O and you can feel confident going forward.

I never asked my dr about sex while on the supps because I was so sick all first tri I had absolutely no interest going there. I would call and ask the nurse at your dr's office, if she doesn't have an answer she will ask the dr and get back to you. At least that's the way it works at my dr's office. Good luck- fx for you!

  • @Dwmmwd and @Guennie - thanks for the support! My temps after O are usually between 97.5 - 98.3. For the three days I've been temping since my supposed O-day, I've had 97.5, 97.8, then 97.3. Will just ride it out and see what happens...

I'm currently a student so do everything through student health. My OBGYN there is awesome but is only there 2 days a week so it's pretty hard to talk to her, although she's pretty good at responding to my messages. The nurses are a bit useless, though, especially with more complicated matters (such as progesterone supplementation). Anyway, I sent a message to my OBGYN and will just wait until she gets back to me before we are intimate in case it's harmful to H.

  • What was your temp the day before suspected O day?

You could probably call and ask a pharmacist about sex while on supps, they are usually very knowledgable.

  • My temp the day before the suspected O day was 97.2 but my temp on the suspected O day was 96.8 so there was a definite drop. And then it jumped up to 97.5 the day after O. I really should start putting my info on an online chart so I can just link it...

jilligan14   I've been on many cycles of progesterone and it will definitely make your temps higher right away.    The suppositories are messy (pantiliners recommended) but it's ok to have sex while you're on them, it will not hurt your husband.  However, the general 'yuck factor' made me less in the mood, but when we did have sex I had DH use a condom -- I didn't like the idea of the the progesterone potentially getting into his blood stream.

  • @GoldenKeys - thanks for the input! I actually haven't felt in the mood either, but of course it's always the first question on H's mind whenever I start/do something new ;) I figured the progesterone would cause my temp to rise but wasn't sure it happened right away. I did have one day of a high temp before starting the supplements so I'm just hoping I did in fact O.

  • My OBGYN finally got back to me and said it is okay to have sex while taking suppositories. Just thought I'd let you all know in case future bumpies ask. I still think I'll follow @GoldenKeys advice about using a condom as this stuff is messy!

Still getting nice and high temps so the prog is definitely working. Can't wait to see if something happened :-)
