C-section questions for OB

I'm hoping and planning for a vaginal birth, but things don't always go as planned. What should I ask my doctor about c-sections? Location of incision? Type of sutures? Etc. I just don't even know where to start.

I searched the forum and couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for (at least not from my phone), so if you can direct me to the right place, I would appreciate that.

Thanks!

  • Maybe how long your hospital stay is expected to be, if you can still do skin to skin right away, about the recovery process and timeframe. I guess just whatever you'd be concerned about. Presumably if you have one it's because you need one, so although it's certainly good to have an idea of what to expect, they'll tell you what you need to know as it happens or afterwards. If you were planning one, or thinking about possibly planning one, I feel like that would be a little different.

  • @Frogger5 has some good suggestions. I would also ask what situations would warrant a c- section if you are wanting a vaginal birth. Some hospitals don't allow skin to skin after a c-section so I would ask if it's not allowed with the mother, can it be done with the father (that was standard practice at one of the hospitals I looked at). If you are planning to Breastfeed you may want to ask about what that will look like after c-section, as well as a timeline. If it were me I'm pretty active so I would also ask about recovery time and what the time frame would be getting back to my normal routine.

    Good luck!
  • I would ask her what she will be closing you up with, is it possible for you to have skin to skin contact at all right away?

My procedure was pretty quick, I stayed for 3 days in the hospital
  • I just read The Essential Guide to c-sections by Maureen Conolly and I highly reccomend it. I will be going in for a repeat c-section and I'm so much more informed.
  • I would ask about driving and whether you can get an exemption to drive earlier than six weeks and then check what your insurance company says about this. I would also ask about breastfeeding and be aware that if you do have a section that sometimes the breastmilk can take 4-5 days to come in. Everything else they will pretty much tell you after you have the section if you need one, I wouldn't worry too much about it, hopefully you won't need one at all!
  • I would ask your Dr if they suture 7 layers or just 3...7 leads to a better recovery.
