Baby shower questions

We finally told our family last night that we are expecting (20 weeks) and they were very excited and supportive. They really want to start planning the baby shower ASAP. I think it's too early and I'm not really ready, but who knows if I will ever be?! I would like your opinion on a few aspects. I am not planning it at all but they of course asked me what I would like and when. I said I guess I would prefer a couples shower, BBQ style over a church hall women's only type party but I didn't really want to be involved in the planning. I did offer up our house for the party if they wanted it. My friends and family are pretty widespread throughout the state and our house is directly in the middle and it is has a very large courtyard with pool, decks, etc. They jumped at that thought and said it would be perfect. My first question is, do you think it's weird to have the shower at our house even though we are not throwing the party? A second question is are kids usually invited? I only ask because the size of this gathering could get pretty big and maybe a little crazy with 20+ kids! I'm not deciding the guest list, I was just curious if this was something that is usually done. Tia!

Re: Baby shower questions

  • I think if whoever is hosting does it right, it won't be weird that it is at your house. If that is the mid point for everyone and a good party spot, then most people probably know/understand that. The one who is throwing it though should send the invites and receive all of the RSVP's etc. As for timing, my mom had mine when I was around 7 months with DS and I thought that was perfect. I looked pregnant but I wasn't SOO huge yet that I was uncomfortable, etc. (think about bending down to pickup gifts people put at your feet when you are sitting, etc.). It also gives you plenty of time to put everything away, wash clothes, etc., return duplicates, buy anything you did not receive that you really want/need. And with regards to kids, every shower I have been to kids have been invited, and honestly I was relieved there were kids at mine too because they love to help you open the gifts and for me it took away some of the "okay this is awkward everyone is just watching me open gifts" feeling.

  • I had my shower around 30 weeks and my MIL wanted to have it around 36 weeks, thank goodness we didn't listen to her because baby came at 34 weeks!!

Couples showers are becoming pretty popular now so I think it's fine to have a casual gathering BBQ setting. I would say if it's a couples shower it's best to invite the kids too. Otherwise you'll run into problems of one person having to stay home with kids as I don't think it's fair to hire a sitter for a shower. Especially if you are aaying people are widespread. But that's just my opinion.
  • Thanks for the input Miz Liz. I like the idea of the kids around, too. It just makes me a little overwhelmed to have probably 40+ people over to entertain at once! But, hey, as long as I'm not cooking and cleaning!!

  • Mine for my daughter was at my house thrown by my sister. My sister send out the invites and came over and set up everything for it. I didn't have any planning input at all. I'm thinking I was 6 or 7 months along also and it seemed to work out well. We did have kids here, but there were only 4 or 5 of them maybe? If you have the room though I wouldn't worry about it.
  • Basically as all PP said. Just make sure even if it at your home you are not stressed with extra cleaning and that it is clear you are not the host.

I think its great you want to do a co-ed shower. My husband and I are doing the same! It's BBQ themed so it will be more casual. We are inviting all our friends and family (children included) so it will be large but the more the merrier. I think it's great to have the kids around to remind everyone why you are all there in the first place :)... But it's definitely up to you and the capacity of your home. And don't worry about having it at your home, everyone just wants to see you, your bump and your hubby, they don't care where they are! Good luck I'm sure it will be wonderful!

  • @Bubbles7712 Super cute invites, but I really would not post the picture of them on here since they have a lot of personal information to include the exact address/date of your shower, email address, etc....too many wackos out there to post so much personal info.
  • My inlaws are throwing our shower at our house.  We are having another one for my family a couple weeks prior at a resturant- different venues work better for different people.
  • The nice thing about having it at your house is that you won't have to figure out how to get everything in a car! Also, maybe while the shower s being set up at your house, you and a sister or close friend could go grab a massage or mani/pedi so everything is ready to go when you come back and you won't feel in the way or awkward about not helping.
  • I would love to have the shower at my own house. Mainly because its less of av headache trying to lug all the gifts from the venue to your car, then from the car into your house etc. And yes I also agree if doing a couples shower plan on the kids being there as well.
  • My sisters are planning my shower at my house. Everything is being kept a secret, so the day of the shower, they're sending me out for a pedicure! I like the idea of it being at my house because all of the gifts are already at my house, and I can show off our baby girl's nursery!
