Have you been asked if you're having twins..when you aren't?

Has anyone been asked if they are having twins or has someone said "are you sure you don't have twins in there?" I've been asked twice, and the second time brought tears. My pre-pregnancy weight was 125, and at 27 weeks, I've gained 14 lbs, which apparently is the "norm," so what is the deal?!

Has anyone else been asked this, and, if so, how do you handle it? I can't help but have my feelings hurt.

Re: Have you been asked if you're having twins..when you aren't?

  • Don't take it to heart; a lot of people are just assholes that don't think before they speak.

By the way, 14 lbs is not a lot at 27 weeks. I'm up 18 lbs at 26 weeks.

  • Well, the second person who asked me was my grandma (who is known to be brash), but she couldn't understand why it offended me?! Just wanted to make sure I wasn't being hyper sensitive.
  • I am extremely self concious as I am already overweight... I was starting to lose weight before finding out I was pregnant! My husbands uncle has always made me feel uncomfortable & sure enough last weekend as he is giving me a hug, he goes "Oh wow, are you SURE it's not twins" soooo loudly that the rest of the family heard. I was so upset & it really made me want to hide until after the baby is born!
  • I definitely understand, @TaraLinnet. My g-ma asked me about twins as I walked in for our Easter family gathering. I just B-lined for the bathroom and cried it out.
  • I haven't encountered it yet but I've gained over 30... :( it's so depressing. I'm normally a thin girl. I was down to 125.. Went back up to 140 right before I got preggo. Now I step on the scale and see just over 170. I just keep eating healthy and know that as long as my baby is healthy, it shouldn't matter.
  • Almost every day my last pregnancy. I hated it, but just dealt with it. It was the lunch lady at the school I worked at that kept asking. I eventually started joking he was just big, and he was... DS turned out 9lbs 10 oz.
  • My bump is still relatively small and I wear my work shirts pretty loose, so I've gotten the opposite - "Are you sure you're pregnant?" Nah, I'm just telling people I am for kicks.

My response to the "Are you sure it's not twins in there?" question would be "I'm sure. What about you?" with a pointed glance at their belly. Hopefully they get that what they're asking is rude.

  • @mascrs Uhg!!! It's crazy!!! As much as I hate you or anyone having to go through this, I definitely feel a bit better im not the only one!!!

Maybe we should have a copy of this to hand out to the people who don't think before they speak!
  • Only with my soon to be 7 yr old. I just said "yeah, I'm sure " I was told buy the doc she was going to be a 10lb baby when I was 37 weeks. Thank God she and her sister were 7 pounders. My uncle slightly assumed today at church. I just corrected him.
  • Yup I was asked this the week, I just laughed and said to them I asked the sonography to make sure there was only one in there.
Maybe I didn't take it to heart because my MIL has been delighting in telling me I'm "huge" and "so big" which I think is way worse .... Stupid cow

People ask me because twins run in our family. Cousins, my sister and brother, my nieces. Also DH has them on his side too. I wish we were having twins! Maybe next pregnancy!

This is what I get asked all the time!!

  • I'm short and have a short torso so my belly is popping more than others who are weeks behind me... I had a couple people at work asking me if I was going to go on leave soon. I said I have three more months! I've only gained 14-15 lbs and I'm 27 weeks also. Those jerks! Lol
  • I used to, but now people are telling me I'm too small to be six months pregnant... I've gained around fifteen or twenty pounds... granted, I lost that much in the first trimester. Still, people need to quit asking stuff like that like it's their business!

Omg I love this and will totally respond this way if someone asked me if I'm having twins!!!
  • I've been asked numerous times (some of which were before I was even showing). People are just trying to be funny I think. I just tell them nope, just one healthy baby!
  • Three people have said it to me so far and the one that irritated me the most was a co worker, an older lady who never had kids asked if I was having twins. I told her no. Then she said "are you sure?" I wanted to slap her in the face and say what the hell is wrong with you?! Do you not have any manners?! It just bothers me that people feel they can say whatever they want but I feel the next person I will say something back! I'm sick of it!
  • I agree that I think people assume they are being funny. That's the only rational explanation (other than the more obvious assumption that people are just douchekabobs). Loving all of the possible comebacks though.
  • Not only have I gotten that, I've also gotten "are you sure they have your due date right?"

    edited April 2015
I finally made my pregnancy public knowledge at work on April 1st (25 weeks). Yesterday (26 weeks), my co-worker asked how much weight I gained. My boss said he shouldn't ask a woman that. I said I didn't care and told him my gain from this past month. Then my co-worker asked if it was just one kid. And I told him, "Now THAT'S a question you should never ask a woman." I then told him I would be sending him an article with a list of things you should never say to a pregnant woman -- and this co-worker has known about my pregnancy since January.

What I REALLY wanted to say?

"Oh, you think I'm big? I'm having a baby, what's your excuse?" ;-)

  • I feel like people think pregnancy is a free pass to comment on a woman's body and weight. Which is why I have adopted the rationale that is a free pass for pregnant women to punch stupid people in the throat. It seems only fair.
  • I just got asked that today, by a random stranger followed up by you must be getting close then. Nope still 3mths left. And another stranger told me I look really young (based on his tone he really ment too young) to be having a kid, especially my second. The question that's getting on my nerves the most though is what are you going to name her. I feel like it's really no ones business especially not that of some random stranger who then wants to start reccomending names that they like.
