small baby

I went to the dr a month ago and they said the baby is measuring small. Today I got another sono and he is still measuring a week small. They told me I need to go back in 3 weeks for another sono to check his size then after that I need a sono once a week. For him only being a week small that seems pretty excessive. Anyone else going through this or is my dr just trying to get more money outof me?

Re: small baby

  • My baby was also measuring a week behind but my doctor doesn't seem concerned about it at all and is not changing my due date. So unless they saw something else, that does seem excessive to me.

  • Mine is measuring about 5 days behind....I found out at our US on Friday. They told me to drink an ensure a day and come back in 4 weeks. But the est weight was 1 pound 1 ounce....soooooo I think it's just perhaps the Dr being cautious. I was a little annoyed and angry on Friday but have since gotten over it. Baby is measuring in the 39th percentile so I'm not too concerned. Good luck to you!! ♡
  • My baby has been measuring in the 30th percentile for a while now.  But, the doctor is not at all worried.  I do have to have one extra ultrasound at 32 weeks, so they could track the baby's growth.

It seems like your doctor is being extra cautious, but that is better than the alternative...
  • You are right. Being extra cautious is better than not at all. It just seems a little crazy and I hope I don't have to pay for these weekly Sonos cuz that will get expensive!
  • @mfitch9191 make sure the Dr is putting in the notes that it's medically necessary...in case it does come up with the insurance company.
  • My baby is measuring a week behind but my Dr said she isn't worried bc just like when they are kids they also have "grow spurts" in the womb.. I have to go back this coming Monday just to check her size and get a picture of the back of her head. But honestly if the Dr isn't to worried then I don't think I should be either.
  • Sounds excessive to me, a week behind is in the range of normal AND at this point ultrasound measurements start to lose accuracy. I'm sure they just want to confirm baby is growing but once a week definitely seems excessive, once a month seems more reasonable if they're really concerned.
  • Once a week sounds excessive. I am having twins and will have growth u/s once a month, they are also considered small for gestational age.

  • My baby is measuring 2 weeks behind. I go to a high risk doctor for other reasons, but he said that it could be many reasons for the baby being behind/small. The baby could of had a growth spurt in the beginning and now the baby is slowing down, or the baby can also have a growth spurt toward the end and fill in the gaps. It could be a chromosomal problem, a placental problem or if you have health problems that could be another reason. We have been having uktrasounds every 3 weeks since I was 20, I am 26 weeks now, so I have a ultrasound this week so that they can see how the baby is growing and progressing. After this one we are going back every other week. The inky thing you can do is monitor and gather more information. In some cases some doctors are worried because maybe there is a actual problem, in some cases, maybe your maybe is just small. Our baby is also expected to be small because I am 4 '8' and my husband is 6 foot, so based on my size we probably won't have a 10 lb baby haha but there are other factors that could be problematic and the reason for the baby being small. Trust your doctor and don't believe everything you read online. Also trust yourself, if you feel something is wrong, go with it. I hope all is well :)
  • Thanks everyone! It is a relief to hear that many people have been told their baby is small also. I am going to try not to worry about it and just be glad that I get to see him often on an ultrasound. Dr said I have nothing to worry about and I feel him kick all day long so I'm pretty sure we are healthy!
  • My baby is measuring small too but my doctor is not concern im not a big person im 5'3 small build i was a small baby and so was my husband when we were born. i Also believe that just like people outside in the world babies grow differently to some small some big. Im sure everything will be fine.
  • Depending on how many weeks you are, it might be that they want you to go every week for your third trimester; I know that's what my doctors want me to do. I'm sure your little bundle of joy is fine they may just have your due date off by a week.
  • My baby is small too -- measuring in the 13th to 15th percentile.  My doctor said that I had marginal placenta previa in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy.  When the placenta lies low in the uterus, it doesn't receive as many nutrients as it would if it were higher, because there are fewer blood vessels there.  I'm 5'7" and perfectly healthy.  Doctor wasn't as all concerned.  If anything, he said, my delivery would be easier than most and he seemed quite happy for me :)
  • My little guy measures small too. Just 5 days behind but I also had an alternating period before getting pregnant that was 5 days off every other month, so they attributed the difference to that since my first exam. But even now I bounce between the 9-10th percentile for his weight. I just have ultrasounds at almost every appointment. The doc decided if he stays on his own little curve up we will just let him be and should just expect a literal "little baby." If he starts to slow down or drop a percentage or two we will probably have to change plans and see what the best option is at the time. Some of my stress was relieved when I found out that the average baby is actually in the 50th percentile and the difference in weight from 10 to 50 is actually only 6-7 ounces, so if your baby is in the 30th or so it's probably good to keep an eye but probably everything's okay. I think most doctors just want to err on the side of caution because if not there is so much more to risk! Good luck though everyone!!
  • Could be excessive.. Or precatious. Never hurts to get extra care (well hurts the wallet) maybe he just wants to make sure the baby is going to be heAlthy.
  • My daughter was a very small baby but my doctor wasn't too concerned because she was always proportionate. Even to this day she's a very petite little girl but perfectly healthy. I had the extra ultrasounds with her and thankfully they were all convered by insurance. They gave me a peace of mind knowing she was growing even though she was petite.

  • You might double check with doc, if baby is measuring small and you start "not growing" then he may be wanting to watch you closely for IUGR, it just means intrauterine growth restriction, and baby typically grows a little slower and is a tad small at birth. Generally if watched closely its a non issue, I went through it with my third and he's just perfect and above average for his age now.
  • At my 24 weeks ultrasound baby was in the 22nd percentile. At the 28 week repeat growth scan baby had dropped to 8th percentile. Doctor disnt seem too worried but we are being tested for genetic mutations and Infections. My blood pressure has been on the higher side and i dont have gd. I am going in every 2 weeks for dopplers of the umbilical cord and every 4 weeks for repeat growth scans.
