Beware of Target

Be careful on where you decide to register. For our wedding I registered at Target and bed bath beyond. Returning items to bbb was a breeze, Target on the other hand was not. I left the store twice because I was about to freak out at their idiot policies. I'm sure we will be stressed enough without having to deal with a painful return process. Just an fyi.

  • Target does have the worst return policy especially if you don't have a receipt. I've got into so many fights with the people there. We aren't having a shower this time but I was planning on doing a registry to get the completion coupon at the end and was thinking about doing it at Target since it's cheaper but this post just reminded me maybe not a great idea!
  • This is so strange to me because the Target in my area is always super helpful and I've never had a problem returning anything to them. Although I always have problems with Babys R Us especially when I called corporate for something I ordered online. Just goes to show its all about the people :)

  • We registered at Target for our wedding and baby and never had an issue with returns for either one of them. We're not planning a baby shower for this one but I like @trj724's idea of creating a registry just to get the discount! :)
  • There's a new policy for target registry items that are good for a one year return

  • I had once recieved a gift from target that wasn't on my registry and that I didn't need. I didn't have a receipt but never had an issue returning it for store credit? Like someone else said it just depends on the people I guess!
  • @wilcoxev it definitely depends on the Target. Most Target stores (if not all) have a certain dollar amount of product you can return each year. If you are returning something from your registry and don't have a receipt (or even if you do), all you have to do is tell them it was from your registry. They will ask for your registry account number. You will need to have this. These returns do not count towards your yearly dollar amount that you can return. They do this because of the cost associated with having to restock items. I have never had a problem with Target registry.

  • I can't remember if we had any problems returning stuff, but I know the biggest problem we had was the product turnover. Some stuff we put on our wedding registry was already ob clearance less than 2 months later and it was not seasonal. Product was also inconsistent between stores, so we ended up not getting much off if that registry.
  • That's strange, because in my experience, I feel like Target has the most liberal return policy I've ever experienced. I've often returned gifts (non registry) without a receipt (the gifter would tell me they purchased the product at Target) with no problem (so long as I accept store credit, but I shop there all the time anyway). Even when I returned the gift months later. Must be dependent on the particular store??

+++*** IF you are registering at target read this…***+++

Just an FYI (and this is probably illegal but you can do it anyway…)

If you get an item from Target, and someone didn't give you the gift receipt, but you know it is from there, and wasn't on your registry - you can add it to your registry online, and then go back in to edit your online registry, and then mark it as received.  They count that as on your registry, and then it does NOT go towards your $75 per person per year return limit because technically when it is on a registry, that counts as a "gift receipt."

Good to know. We did B&B for our wedding. It was easy and returning gifts was a breeze!

  • No I don't think it depends on the store, their polices are uniform. I think the policies are terrible. $75 per year for no receipt is ridiculous, especially when a person is registering for hundreds of dollars worth of items. And no I don't remember my registery password from 6 months ago. I've returned items to bbb used without a box or receipt that stopped working for in store credit.
  • My cousin had his wedding registry in Target and when I went to the store to shop for his gift, the big items I wanted to get him were only available online. So when I went online (probably another day), it said that what I wanted to get them was no longer available. His wife said they were having that problem throughout when some things they registered for were no longer available and they had to replace it with an equivalent item, if they have it. Don't know if this happens often or if they were just "lucky."
  • That stinks. Our target is pretty awesome with returns. I've never had an issue with them.
