I need some advice

so I went in to do my glucose test today and I unfortunately could not get it done because i didn't have a lab paper and the registration lady told me that she couldn't register me because I didn't have one which resulted in me getting up furious and leaving. That drink made me so sick and I drank it for pretty much nothing since I couldn't get it done. My question is.. I'm planning on telling my doctor I'm not taking the test (yes I know it's horrible if I don't) but couldn't my ob just treat me as if I am with diet control? I'm a low risk pregnancy baby is measuring on track and she's healthy and I'm also healthy with no medical problems and they test my sugar at every appointment anyway.

Re: I need some advice

  • That's not really a question. You said you're planning on telling the doctor you aren't taking it. What is the question? It is not a good thing to miss out on this and I'm sure your doctor will strongly advise you otherwise. GD can hit anyone and is not healthy for you or the baby if you have it.
  • Loading the player...
  • Personally, I think the test is a crock. There are more effective (and accurate) ways of figuring out whether you have GD. I recommend reading up on the test and discussing other options with your OB.
  • @raptorteaparty I clicked post by accident. Edited it though.
  • Also I eat healthy and I walk A lot I understand the risks but I'm taking the precautions anyways by maintaining my diet and exercising iv never had my doctor say anything about me being at risk she just told me I'm young healthy and my baby is healthy.
  • Please have a serious conversation with your doctor, they're not going to prescribe you test just for the heck of it. With gestational diabetes you can be healthy, you can be active and still have it. Isn't it worth the discomfort of an upset stomach to find out and take the proper precautions?
  • i was diagnosed with GD and i urge you to take the test only cause if you end up having gestational diabetes- left untreated it can harm you and the baby!!! and im sure that you....being a mom, wouldnt wanna put your unborn baby through that. dont let your emotions get the best of you.

If the drink would have given me an upset stomach that I could have handled but seeing as how my vision when blurry and I started sweating and felt ridiculously Nauseous I'll find another way to be tested for it.
  • Thanks for the feedback I'll be finding another way to be tested for it.
  • Diet alone isn't always enough to treat GD - you could need insulin or other treatments. And getting your sugar checked at your appointments won't tell you whether diet alone is working - you would need to check your sugar via fingerprick multiple times a day and watching the pattern closely.

Yes, I'm not sure why you asked us for advice since it sounds like you have made up your mind already and nothing anybody says will change that. I hope you give your doctors advice more weight than you gave ours.

ETA - which I would hope you do anyway (trust your doctor)

  • I agree with the PP's. Just take the test. It's not fun but it's worth it to know in the end. I failed my 1 hour by four points and I was pretty upset I had to sit for the 3 hour test. But I did it and all was well. Good luck!!
  • I had an OB that let me eat a designated breakfast (2 pieces of toast, 2 eggs, 8 oz orange juice, 8 oz milk and 2 tablespoons of butter) and get my blood tested an hour later. This OB said my only ther option was to do finger blood draws 4 times a day for a week. I didn't think I could remember to do that with my schedule. In other countries they don't test everyone, only people with indicators. Make the choice that is best for you and your baby.
  • I have a very healthy runner friend who had it. She tried to manage it through diet alone but it was so severe that she required medication. Not everyone is able to manage it through diet alone, even when they are super healthy to begin with.

I know you're going to test now which is good..I gagged a few times on the drink but I got through it. Ask if you can test after a special diet instead of the drink. But if your body responded to the drink as you described I'm willing to bet you actually do have GD, or at least some kind of allergy to whatever was in the drink.
  • I just don't understand the request for advice... And then subsequent logic demonstrated in this thread.

Either way it sounds like your mind is made up. I hope that whatever choice you make everything works out and both you and baby make it through and are healthy.. It would be incredibly damaging to know that such a simple test being completed could have prevented tragedy if soemthing goes wrong.

Good luck OP hopefully your doctor can provide a solution that works and ensures both yours and baby's health and best interest.

Just talk to your doctor about what is normal and what isn't. Everyone is different. I was nauseous, faint, and sweating from the 'sugar rush'. Talk to your doctor about your experience and go from there.
  • There are different ways to test for it without the drink. You can test your blood daily. Which means poking your finger a few times a day (I had a friend test this way).
Just talk to your doctor and ask what other options you could try.
  • I failed the one hour test and my doc did a two day test what I did was ate normal one day of the week I went and ate breakfast like normal two hours from when I started eating I went to the lab and got my blood drawn. Then on a different day of the week I ate like normal and ate lunch two hours after I went in to draw my blood. My doc feels it's a more realistic way of testing. I'd ask about it.
  • OP you realize diabetes (GD or otherwise) is not just from your diet alone. It has to do with your pancreas function and how well it processes and breaks down sugar. Anyone can get GD, healthy or not so it just seems silly to me to not get the test done. Sometimes the drink they make you take sucks, I got sick after it, and I don't know how they let you even have the drink in the first place without the paperwork needed, but all it takes is a trip to your doctor and maybe fill out a form or two. I don't know if you wanna be trying to remember to prick your finger every couple hours or what not so I'd say just go get your blood drawn once and they will be able to tell you fairly quickly. But hey, we're all just a bunch of dummies you shouldn't listen to at all, right?
  • An ob will tell you, you have to do all the tests. A midwife will talk thru what tests are out there and what the consequences of them are so you make an informed choice. Family history and your history and education means you can make a choice. Your body!

How did you get the drink without the proper paperwork? I had to turn in my orders for the test and check in at the desk before they would give me anything.

I also agree with everyone else. Just do the test. It's one hour out of your life. One hour to ensure that everything is okay with your body and will be okay with your baby. Any unprocessed sugar in your body crosses the placenta and the baby helps break it down with their insulin. If left untreated, when the cord is cut, your baby can develop severe hypoglycemia. They have a lot of insulin pumping through their bodies from your sugar intake, and no sugar to break down. Not to mention, there are other serious health problems that can happen to BOTH of you. I'm healthy, walked a few times a week and ate very well, and I still had GD.

"My question is.. I'm planning on telling my doctor I'm not taking the test (yes I know it's horrible if I don't) but couldn't my ob just treat me as if I am with diet control?"

Seems like you just wanted to vent (totally fair) and probably aren't getting the sympathy and support here that you wanted (also fair, given the test's importance to your baby's healthy, potentially). Your "question" can clearly only be answered by your OB. As always happens when one throws a medical question to a public audience, the amount of misinformation provided (and arrogance displayed), by a few ladies on here, is scary. Thankfully most are talking sense.
  • I got the drink from my doc office before I went in I drank it at home then went to the lab to get my blood drawn for the 1 hour test. Totally understand the fainting sweating nausea feeling because I also had this. I failed the test OP. I had to do the three hour test yesterday, which I had to have extra blood drawn and drink another way more sugary drink. I now have an awesome blood pool on my arm and most likely GD. Here is my question to you, clearly you can look for other options to test all of which by the way to me sound way worse than redoing 1 hour sugary gross feeling. Also I'm I have a totally normal pregnancy healthy baby too, for me I would much rather spend another 1 hour or even 4 hours then have to lose my kid. I'm not trying to scare you I'm merely explaining that after talking to your doc, I would weight the Hassel of the other tests and remember this one is only 1-4 hours long (4 if you fail the 1 hour which just so you know millions of women do).

As someone who goes to an OB, this hasn't been my experience. My first OB was like this, which is why I switched halfway through to another care provider (also an OB). My current doctor explains everything to me and gives me the resources I need to make an informed decision. From what I hear, this is the case with good midwives too, but I don't think this is a case of OP not having enough information from her doctor or midwives v. doctors. As PP have said, this is immaturity and not wanting to return after having thrown a hissy fit. The drink can be difficult, but there are other ways to take the test and it would be good for OP to talk to her doctor about those options rather than flat out refusing to do anything.

  • OP hasn't been back, it seems. Tho I did see that she went to the Gestational Diabetes thread and said the exact same thing. Hopefully those ladies will give her some context as to why the test is so important.

  • She changed the wording in the GD thread and said she phoned ahead of time to ask if there was anything she had to do to prepare for it, and they said no to just come in. But what blows my mind is that she thinks the people at the lab are going to just blindly take her blood without there being a form written up by the doctor, and getting so angry about it.
  • This content has been removed.
  • The problem with her wanting to "act like she has it and control it with diet" is that sometimes that's not enough. Sometimes diet plays absolutely no part and your body just goes whacko and won't break down the sugar effectively. The only way to know that is to be monitoring your sugar daily.
