May 2015 Moms

I need help dealing with cold symptoms.

My ob doctor is out until Monday. I have an appointment with her then. I have been dealing with fever on and off, runny nose, sore throat, headaches, and low blood sugar due to not eating enough since Tuesday. I called and talked the assistants who told me not to worry unless fetal counts were low. I kept getting worse and went to urgent care today. They said it is a upper respiratory virus and can't do anything for me. I have tried cough medicine they told me to take, tylenol, vicks vapor rub and cold compresses.

Anyone have advice on what to do until I see my doctor on Monday? Or have anything that has worked for them so far? Yes I know we aren't doctors on here and I will be getting medical help soon. I just want something to make me comfortable until my appointment on Monday.

  • While I don't have any good recommendations for the cold - I ended up in the hospital after mine screwed up all my vitals - I do highly recommend Benadryl for sleep until you have a plan to manage the other symptoms. The ability to get a good night's sleep amongst all the other havoc your body is wreaking on you cannot be underestimated! Hope you feel better soon!

  • I am currently going thru a sinus infection right now and it's terrible. My head feels like it can explode and I can't sleep a wink. I just recently got out my vaporizer and have been standing in front of that on and off to put some steam into my nasal passages. It does feel great temporarily.
  • Someone else asked about this one last week, so maybe check through that and see if there are any other tips.

  • Thanks for the replies. Kind of sounds like I am out luck unfortunately. :( I have tried everything everyone else has already.

Sorry I didn't see that thread before.

No need to apologize!  It had a totally different name than what I would have thought to search.  I only remembered it because I replied to it. :)  I hope you feel better soon!
  • I had a terrible cold and finally went to the doctor on Wednesday. He suggested I take Zyrtec to clear my head out. I do have seasonal allergies but this was much more than an allergy sniffle. I took the Zyrtec for 3 days and slept as much as I could. It will definitely dry your sinuses out. Feeling much better! Hope you get well soon!

Soaking In a hot bath of (maximum) 101f with Epsom salts. Honey in your tea (seriously) or a teaspoon straight will soothe your throat. Benadrylx2 to knock yourself out for a little while. Tylenol extra strength is on my ok list from Drs office. Sinus rinse (netti pot kits are at the pharmacy) will give relief too, though ONLYdistilled water, NEVER tap water. Vaporizer with eucalyptus:) also, Vicks on your feet with cotton socks over them. Seems to help with fever and soothing. Good luck, momma, I hope something here brings you some relief. Stay hydrated and get some small meals in you!
  • A bad cold can be miserable, and it seems we pregnant ladies are susceptible to getting hit hard with these bugs. Rest, rest, rest! I second the extra strength tylenol (1000 mg), humidifier, and peppermint tea with honey. Honey is an antimicrobial.

    Hang in there, mama. :(

  • I'm on day 8 of my sinus infection/laryngitis. I came down with it early last Sunday and was out on Monday. The only thing that kept me going was a neti pot, cough drops, and vicks on my feet with socks on (at night). My husband slept in the guest room all week because I was completely spread out in order to sleep a wink. I still have a stuffy nose and a cough, but it's manageable and I can deal. I had an OB appt on Friday and she said just keep the vitamin C up and rest. My body will fight it.
  • I'm about to become a mom for the 2nd time in 15 months. I've had flu with both my pregnancies & am currently getting over my flu picked up a few days ago. Unfortunately there's not much you can take...but a mixture of honey & fresh/pickled ginger in a mug filled with boiling water (which is then left to cool) until it can be drunken, definitely does wonders for a sore throat, congestion & cough...you can have it as regularly as you want as it is natural. I'm not sure if you have Vicks vapour rub like we do here in South Africa, but if you do - have a shower/bath - rub Vicks under your feet, put socks on & then rub some on your chest & get your husband/a family member to rub some on your back - bundle up in bed & try sleep it off. Ideally you will sweat a bit, which is good as your body's working the virus out of your body. Vicks vapour rub is safe & can be administered to toddlers 2 years & up. I hope you feel better soon.
  • My vote for the Neti pot! At least it lets you breath. Unfortunately my doc said nothing besides Benedryl and Tylenol. We've got to tough it out on our own.
  • I just got over a bad cough/cold. Robitusin, saline spray, benedryl, Tylenol, any cough drops, tea with honey, prob yourself up at night - I did it all. I'm so sorry you're sick, it'll pass - it's miserable. Hang in there. Take what you need to feel better.

  • Try to stay home from work if you can. It really helped me when I was able to get some rest. I think I would have been sick for longer otherwise. Agreed with pp on the Neti pot!
  • *Update* well my doctor's appointment did not go as planned today. My blood pressure was through the roof. So they are testing me for gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia. She did write me an excuse to stay home tomorrow from work as well. She prescribed me an antibiotic incase my viral is turning into a sinus infection. I am on day seven of this. I took three half days already. My work is upset with me because I have had to stay home a lot or leave early for doctor appointments. It's been a rough pregnancy. This is the first time I have been this sick in years! Thanks for all the advice ladies.

I do have one more question. They were too worried about my blood pressure to answer my questions today. I woke up today with my tongue numb/tingly. I thought maybe I took my meds too close together. So I haven't taken any more cough meds since last night but it's still happening. Any experience? It wouldn't have anything to do with the high blood pressure would it?
  • I know if you mix Benadryl and liquid antacid it makes "magic mouthwash" which numbs your mouth and throat. If you didn't take those I would call your dr and ask.
  • That would make sense. The cough syrup had benedryl and I took a tums not long after. How long should the effects of that last though?
