Mederma Stretch Mark Therapy Cream- safe to use?

What have you guys heard about Mederma Stretch Mark cream use during pregnancy? I know, on the bottle, it says safe for use starting in the SECOND trimester. I am 30 weeks, so I am in my third, but if it's not safe for use during the first trimester, doesn't it still pose a risk at ANY trimester? I have terrible stretch marks and I want to try this but if it poses any risks at all, I don't want to try it :(I've researched it but can't really find much. Thanks!

  • Never heard of it but I'd be skeptical of it's effectiveness. I thought stretch marks never went away? I'd ask your doctor to be safe!

  • Pretty sure you will have the same results with lotion. Your stretch marks will fade over time but there is no miracle cure for them. Sorry!

  • Mederma isn't worth the money. I bought it right after my first pregnancy and it did nothing to help. They will fade over time and not be as noticeable but they won't go away completely. I eventually learned to embrace them!
  • I thought it was all genetic too and I haven't really been using any creams or lotions religiously. Then my dr. told me on Thursday that i'm entering the "stretch mark danger zone" (lol) and that I should use cream multiple times per day. From what I had read only vitamin e had shown mixed results at preventing stretch marks so I thought it was a really weird comment. Maybe it helps a little but I thought they were just too far below the skin surface for creams to penetrate... now i'm just confused.
  • Just keeping your skin hydrated is the most you can do. A butter or oil applied on warm, damp skin (think fresh out of the shower) will be the most effective at keeping moisture in. Sunflower oil is cheap, light enough to soak in quickly, and has a very subtle smell, so it's my personal favorite (though I do also use kokum butter and love that).

Doctors are people, too, and when it's something silly like stretchmark prevention/treatment, I'm not surprised if your doc said to use lotion . . . it's not going to hurt. I probably would have asked if that was actual scientific advice or just "general knowledge" advice. He/she probably would have admitted that there's no evidence it helps but could have pulled out an anecdote or two.
  • When do stretch marks start to appear?? I was hoping at 31 weeks I might be in the clear. I guess they can come at any time and maybe even more so near the end as that's when most of the quick growing happens??
  • @Emilywooddesign I'm not sure, but I noticed some for the first time around 30 weeks :( but who knows when they appeared - I can't see my entire body nowadays!

I was hoping I was in the clear too... hopefully we will get lucky, but I guess you never know.

So far I am stretch mark free (go ahead and hate me) EXCEPT on one of my boobs. I'd rather have some on tummy, to be honest :(

Edited to add - and I don't even apply anything daily. Genetics - my sister had twins and only has one stretch mark on her belly

That gives me hope!! I'm having twins and so far I don't have any! My mum didn't get any but I thought it would be pretty inevitable with twins. Don't even google railroad stretch marks.

I agree, I prefer to have them on my tummy instead of my boobs. I put lotion on my tummy and boobs when I remember or if I get really itchy and I do drink a TON of water.

My friend had a lot of stretch marks when she was pregnant with her daughter and she looks amazing now, you can't even see them- they faded so much that they are pretty much invisible.

    Fingers crossed for us!

Yeah, I don't think I have any yet, but I'm not going to go looking for them either.

  • I use Earth Mama Angel Baby stretch oil and it is ahhhhhmazing! It doesn't prevent (as PPs have said, all genetic) but helps with skin moisture/itch. I get it on amazon for around $9 ($20+ in stores).
  • I have mostly heard that they are genetic, but that keeping your skin hydrated might help a little.  I like using vitamin e oil right after a shower, it helps keep the itching at bay for me!  Developing a few stretch marks but I was already prone to them before pregnancy (on my hips and thighs) so I'm assuming over the next two months they will only get worse.  Oh well, momma tiger stripes and battle scars! I'll just try to embrace it :)

This is our 4th baby. I got stretch marks near the end of my first pregnancy. They were red at first, but eventually faded to a white color and shrunk in size. I used anything you could think of after my first pregnancy to help like vit. E oil, maderma, cocoa butter. Honestly, there were no noticeable changes right away. Time, losing weight, and my time in the sun helped mask the appearance, but they are still there. Luckily, every pregnancy since then have not resulted in any new stretch marks. It is hard when you first get them, but you should just forget about them. What's done is done. ;)
