Tongue Tie

Does anyone else have a newborn with a tongue tie? My little gal takes over an hour to nurse and still seems hungry after. She so often falls asleep while I nurse because she's working so hard to get the milk. I was trying to avoid having her tie cut because it just seems so awful but I'm beginning to think it'd be the best thing for her. Anyone else facing this issue? What are your thoughts on the subject?

The nurses at the breastfeeding clinic believe my son has a lip tie and posterior tongue tie. He's seeing a paediatrician on Monday about it and also has a referral to see a paediatrician who is a tie and breastfeeding specialist (Dr. Newman).

Our son is 15 days old and has struggled since day 1 with breastfeeding. I currently have to pump every feeding and then hand feed him. Maybe once a day I will get a good latch from him and he will try his best to nurse, but I have to use a nipple shield. I'm hell bent to make this work, it's so important to me! But I'm also terrified for the procedure. I know it's quick but I just can't fathom the thought of him being in pain

I'm right there with you, my three day old I'm pretty sure has lip tie and possibly tongue tie .. I really wish I didn't have to do anything about it but I may need to. While he's nursing like a champ and everything seems fine on his part I'm in serious pain

My son was tongue tied. I too hated the thought of getting it clipped but we had a lot of breastfeeding issues. I read it is not bad if you get it done early. He was 9 days old when we got it done and he barely cried. We struggled with breastfeeding for a few days after but now he's got it down. He can now stick his tongue out!

My daughter has lip tie. She's a month old now and she's been a good nurser from day one. It finally stopped hurting me this week. I'm not sure if I got used to the way she latches or if she figured out how to latch better...

All the mommies I know who had the procedure done for their babies said it wasn't as bad as they imagined and it healed quickly. Better to do earlier than later though.

My son isn't tongue tied but my husband was and they didn't get it clipped and he ended up having jaw and teeth issues because of it. When you close your mouth your tongue naturally rests in the roof of your mouth and sets where your teeth position naturally, when it's tied it doesn't do that it's stuck in the bottom of your mouth. He ended up having a lot of painful orthodontic work done and wore braces for 7 years. That was one of the first things he wanted to check because of what he went through he would've had our sons clipped if it had been tied. But that was just his personal experience with it. I would always research, speak with doctors, and do what's best for your baby.

Both my kids have had a tongue tie and it's caused breastfeeding issues both times. Baby Girl has not only a tongue tie but also a lip tie as well. She latched great but doesn't seem to get enough milk when she nurses. She lost 13% or her birth weight so I broke down and started giving her bottles and supplementing with formula. She's finally gained weight and was only 3 % down her birth weight. I've now started pumping exclusively to give her milk that way. We were told her tongue tie is pretty bad and there's a chance she will bleed too much to have a doctor clip it, we will have to be referred to an ent to get it done because it will need to be cautirized to prevent a lot of blood loss. The thought of her losing a lot of blood scares me, so I'm not sure I want to have it clipped. I'm okay giving her bottles and to keep pumping.

It's a fairly safe and quick procedure I've been told.

My oldest was tongue tied and we were struggling to breast feed. So I opted to have it clipped in the hospital before we left. She was gone, maybe 5 minutes? They brought her back and she was still sound asleep and I saw no blood. I set put her up to my breast and she went to town. We never had an issue after that. It can cause a lot of problems later on with speech.

My baby boy was born with a tongue tie that meant he couldn't latch on at all. He was referred to get it checked out and we got it snipped. He slept through the entire thing, only a tiny bit of blood. I couldn't watch, but my partner stayed beside him. It's a parents choice, but it can affect their speech and also simple things like their ability to lick an ice cream.

My daughter has a lip tie. It makes latching painful for me. But she's doing great with weight gain and everything so I'm leaving it alone for now. It's gotten better but if it's still painful when she's a month I'll take her to a ent for a consult. It's just that it's an expensive procedure and I don't like the idea of putting her in pain just because my nips are sore. Lol.

Our son had a tongue tie but we had it clipped when he was 5 days old. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Struggled to get the hang of nursing for the first few feeds after but that was it.
Hard decision but think we made the right choice.

Like I mentioned earlier my now 5 year old as has a tongue tie and we never had it clipped and we don't have any issues with his speech or thus far any orthodontic issues.

My son was tongue tied. The doctor recommended we have it clipped because of the severity of it. It really was a painless procedure. He only cried because they restrained him. He stopped crying as soon as they let him go. He ate right after they did it with no issues. They only used one piece of gauze for the ridiculously little amount of bleeding that there was. Its been 4 weeks now since we had it done and you would never know that he was tongue tied.

Me and all my siblings were tongue tied. We all got clipped as babies but my brother. He had speech issues and had to get it clipped in 1st grade and had to relearn how to talk. My son was also tongue tied and we got it clipped when he was 5 days old. He cried for a minute but was better after that (nursing is much better now). Not as bad as having it done as a child and having 5 nurses hold you down.
