When's the right time to start buying things?

I know babies need a lot & I mean a lot (& this is my first so I want to be prepared!) im 8weeks & 1day when would you all say the right time to start buying things like small essentials? My other half says it's too soon and refuses to start buying until we know the sex

Re: When's the right time to start buying things?

  • It's personal preference of course but as someone who has experienced a late loss I did not buy anything until after viability with my 2nd pregnancy. Additionally do you plan on registering / having a baby shower? If so, I would start researching and making lists so others can shower you will all the goodies baby will need.

  • I waited until viability.
  • We saved money and waited until I was about 6 months.
  • So around the 24 week mark, or after the first scan?
  • Why not start with a cute maternity shirt or dress for yourself?

  • I started buying a pack of diapers per paycheck since I found out. I'll be 8 weeks Tuesday. I've experienced mc before so I'm a little scared, but if anything were to happen my sister is two weeks ahead of me so it wouldn't go to waste or have to be taken back. I also know if I just put money back something will happen that I have to spend the money on. So I'm buying anything I don't have to have gender specific now before I know what I'm having.
  • I bought a pack of wipes every time I went to the grocery with coupons I got in the paper and online with my first. We didn't run out until after he was 2. You end up using wipes for everything!
  • I waited until viability so at least 6 months. Also if someone throws a shower for you, you will get some (if not a lot) of those things. I didn't start buying anything until after a shower. Only bought big things like crib / other furniture / carseat / stroller but not earlier then 6-6.5 months.

    Yes.
  • Thanks for your advice! I have someone on my facebook who's only 15 weeks and has already brought her pushchair, cot, Moses basket and a massive amount of baby clothes and I though it was abit to early for all that stuff already

It's really just a matter of comfort level. I'm guessing by your description you aren't in the U.S. And maybe baby showers aren't commonplace. It's possible your Facebook friend got some good deals she couldn't pass up! And that's fine if it works for her!
  • No we don't so baby showers where I'm from, but if people do have one its a surprise that the parents don't find out about till they are at the surprise baby shower & that's why I've asked for opinions because everyone does it at different times x
  • I'm buying the bigger items that are more expensive now. Like one each month. These are things I am going to have be gender neutral so we can keep them for any future children. Just so I don't feel like I have to rush after the baby shower or in the last few months of pregnancy.
  • There isn't really a right or wrong answer.
I personally purchased little things after I saw the heartbeat but waited until my anatomy scan was confirmed normal at 20 weeks to buy the larger items.
In all honesty babies don't need a whole lot. Just a car seat, somewhere to sleep, diapers and some clothing (and feeding equipment depending on how you choose to feed your lo)the rest is more luxury items.
