Success after IF

Success using assisted hatching? -losses mentioned

Hi
I'm so frustrated. I just had my second IVF fail. I was feeling so confident - we had two 8 cell grade 1.5 embryos transferred and no results. My first ivf was a chemical pg. Prior to ivf we did 5 rounds of iui. One ended in an early mc at 6 weeks and one a chemical. I'm 42 and no other problems except for my age and no problems with my DH. I feel like I'm running out of time (and $ - insurance covers practically nothing). Has anyone had success with assisted hatching after failed ivf?

Re: Success using assisted hatching? -losses mentioned

  • Yes! I did. Our only diagnosis was abn. sperm morphology. My history is in my siggy, but here it is:

IVF # 1 2 "perfect" blasts= chemical pregnancy. Gave us 3 frozen embryos

FET #1 All 3 blasts survived thaw, resulted in a twin miscarriage just shy of 6 weeks.

    IVF #2 fail, no frozen

IVF # 3 Fail, no frozen

IVF # 4 we did our first 3 day transfer WITH assisted hatching. Resulted in b/g twins! Also had 1 frozen embryo

3 years later....FET #2 blast survived thaw, resulted in 6.5 week miscarriage.

We were OOP for everything. It was so $$$ but worth it.

    Good luck!

  • I'm sorry about your failed cycles. Have you tried PGS or similar genetic testing on your embryos? Unfortunately, how the embryo looks doesn't always correlate to it having the proper genetic material to be viable. As we age, we end up with more abnormal eggs and embryos. PGS could save you a lot of failed cycles and heart break. Good luck!

I agree with additional testing if possible. We did assisted hatching with both of our cycles that worked.

  • We used AH with a successful cycle (and two lesser quality blasts). Both embryos stuck. I do believe it helped, as our cycle before that failed with a textbook perfect blast.

  • I second doing PGD. With 2 ER, both yielding 11 eggs, both resulted in 3-5 day embryos and we only got one genetically normal embryo. I am beyond thankful the PGD saved us tons of stress, losses or BFNs, time and money. There is nothing "wrong" with my DH or I, besides my AMA (all my blood work looked great). We are now 25 weeks pg from that one embryo via a FET.

  • Thanks everyone for your advice. I spoke to my RE and he didn't think that AH would make much of a difference for me but it was my decision. I might still go for it and PGD as well, but because we are OOP for practically everything, money is unfortunately a factor in the decision making. We're going to do a round of clomid and IUI and pray for a miracle, and if that fails go on to IVF #3. I'm just emotionally, mentally and physically exhausted from this process and maybe taking a step back with the IUI will help me destress a bit.
  • We did assisted hatching on our second attempt. The doctor suggested it. I'm not sure exactly why he suggested it, or if that's what made the difference, but I'm glad we did it, because I'm currently 12w 6d with a singleton. We didn't get to blastocyst either time, because our little guys weren't looking great and the doc didn't want to risk it. We never had any grade 1. The first time we transferred 4 total, with 1 grade 2. The second time we transferred 6 total, with 1 grade 2. I hope the IUI is successful! That wasn't a good option for us due to very poor sperm quality.
  • My RE runs the RPL (recurrent pg loss) panel for multiple failed IVFs.  They also use the "unexplained RPL" medicinal protocol for multiple failed IVFs.  This includes baby aspirin, Vit Bs, an immunosuppressant.  In my case I had yrs of IF/RPL and IUI BFNs, by the time I got to IVF I went full hog - PGS (which is AH).  There were many other factors, so I'm not sure what turned my really, really, really, really, really "bad luck" into really, really "good luck".  Wishing the key or good chance comes your way...

  • I know PGD is expensive, but it addition to the emotional, time and physical savings, it can save money in the long run too. In my case, with my first ER I would of spent money transferring 3 embryos, one at a time, that were all abnormal and then with my second ER I had 3 embryos with 2 being abnormal. When I look at it that way it was the very best money spent. Just food for thought, GL

  • My 5th & 6th IVF cycles we did assisted hatching and ICSI.  They resulted in my DD and I am currently 26w3d pregnant with twins!   I felt we had to try everything and not leave any stones unturned.  IF is such a heartbreaking journey.  Good luck!

  • Thanks again everyone! Currently in the TWW for the IUI. Not too hopeful that it will work, but you never know. Lots of decisions to make if I get a BFN.
  • Good luck!!!

thanks everyone :) the IUI didn't work, and I'm doing another one this month before going back to IVF if it doesn't work. Dr changed up my protocol a little bit so you never know. I have 4 follicles that as opposed to only 2 last month, and I should trigger tonight.
After some thought and talks with the RE, I think for the next IVF (fx that this IUI works), but I'm definitely going to to assisted hatching, but not the PGD testing, since it's very expensive and will not improve my chances. I am almost entirely out of pocket for everything which is extremely frustrating.
