So I posted the other day about the gestational diabetes test and I failed. Does anyone have any good resources (besides Pinterest) for recipes/ideas/etc?
I just got diagnosed and my appointment with the diabetes clinic isn't until Thursday. I did buy an e book on being gluten free and diabetitic (I also have celiac). My bachelors degree is in Health with emphasis in Women's health and nutrition, so I'm taking a lot of that knowledge and applying it. My cousin also has Type 1, so I grew up around the diet.
I just was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and went to see the doctor today to discuss my results. I was given all the information to make an appointment to see the dietician where they will go over blood testing and diet. I also was prescribed Glyburide and told to start taking it tomorrow morning. Well after coming home I went online and started reading on Glyburide and found that it sometimes will lower the blood sugar too low. I already have a call in to the doctors office but they probably won't get back to me until the AM. My question is if I don't even have the glucose monitor yet and certainly don't know how to use it until I go to the class should I be taking this medication already? How will I know if it's working right or if it's not if I'm not supposed to monitor my blood until after I take the class? Also has anyone else been given medication right away before trying just the diet first? Like I said, I will ask the doctor all these questions as soon as they get back with me but I was wondering if any of you have had a similar experience. Thanks!
I am also Celiac!!! Too funny. I am familiar with diabetes care as we have type 1 in the family, just need some recipe ideas. I have an appointment next week but do all my cooking for the week on the weekends so trying to get some prep done before that.
@hunny_bunches when your doctor calls you back on Monday ask for them to call in a generic meter and testing supplies into the pharmacy. Then call the pharmacy and ask them to fill what ever meter is preferred by your insurance. I'm diabetic and I'm a pharmacy technician so I know that each insurance generally has a meter company they prefer over others. Also glyburide usually isn't the first medication given for diabetes, usually it's metformin. Either way having gestational diabetes generally means that diet alone won't help keep your sugars under control. I agree that I wouldn't start taking a medication without being able to monitor my sugar levels. You can ask a pharmacist to show you how to set up your meter and how to use it if you're not familiar with it. And most doctors have no issue calling the meter in for you because a majority of insurance companies cover them at little to no cost. Hope this helps!
My glucose numbers were abnormal, and I wasn't prescribed any medication. I am considered to have gestational diabetes, and I am controlling it with diet only.
So went to get my test done and the lady at registration wouldn't register me because I didn't have a lab paper so she said I'd have to come back with a paper requesting the test be done I was so pissed I drank the drink and it made me feel awful and they wouldn't draw my blood after I called in and asked if I needed to do anything before hand and they told me just to come in and I can do it nothing about a stupid paper to register me. I refuse to take this test
well i have gestational diabetes...and they say, you cant have this...you cant have that, well you can pretty much eat anything you want long as its in your carb range. (and in small portions.) prolly stay away from the carbs that have no nutritional value like pop, pastries, candy, chips....etc. eat more protein to give you that full feeling...nuts, meat, eggs, green veggies and so on. i became a carb counting maniac. which helps to my benefit. also, exercise exercise exercise!!! especially after your meals.

I'm finding it easier and harder to be celiac and have GD. I'm already used to adjusting my diet. Most sugary things (cake, donuts, bread, cookies) aren't in my diet bc I'm too cheap to pay the price for GF items. However, most subsitutes I have found have more carbs like rice and GF noodles.

Sorry to all the ladies on this thread, this particular response has nothing to do with GD, but the poster made a thread about needing advice saying practically the same thing and people gave her more than enough advice on the other thread she should read. But honestly, @lizabean15 have you never had blood drawn at a lab for anything else before in your life? Cause usually if the doctor/nurse at your office doesn't do it themselves, they will usually give you whatever paperwork you need to take to the lab. Most labs don't just randomly take blood from people if the doctor hasn't written an order form for it. If your doctor didn't give you anything to take to the lab with you then tell them that and they'll give you the form, they may have just forgotten. And where did you get the drink from? Did the doctor give it to you to drink at home before going to the lab? Honestly put your big girl pants on and go do it. And maybe read the other thread you started too, people had some useful things to say there.
I'm very Sorry to sidetrack from the topic of this thread, I just thought someone should respond to her before another thread gets made, since she seems to have not gone back into the other one that got started.

I really think you should go take this test. If something goes wrong, you will never forgive yourself. If there was anything I could have done differently to change my outcome, I would have done it.
I agree that the test should be taken but I won't call you names for venting. GD can cause dangerous complications and there aren't any stand out symptoms that's why they do the ridiculous test that takes forever and involves drinking a nasty sugar drink. It's a big part of your unborn child's health. I'd complain about them not sending an order. That's BS. You have a reason to be upset about that.

Ummmm...what advice did people give? I specifically asked about recipes. I posted the other day about the 3 hour test which I failed. In my mind these are two separate things...
I would avoid recipes on Pinterest and blogs that say they are for gestational diabetes. In the ones I've found that specifically say their for gestational diabetes seem be wildly inaccurate when it comes to carbs. I talked to my dietician and she was able to give me better ideas for recipes so that is who I would recommend. Three weeks into checking my blood and counting the carbs and I'm getting the hang of it. Being motivate by my baby's health and mine pushed me through the initial emotion and frustration I experienced.

I was genuinely confused @emaddock cause @lizabean15 started another thread about her refusal to take the test because she didn't have a form from the doctor so the registration lady at the lab wouldn't take her and she got angry about it. I quoted it, actually, because she had not returned to the other thread she made. Had nothing to do with anything you said.

Gotcha--I was confused by that too. I just couldn't tell whom you were referencing. Thanks for clearing it up!
We are going thru the same thing. So far we have just been limiting the amount of sugars and carbs and the blood sugar levels have been pretty good 80-100. I guess my advice would be to just keep it simple and moderate where you can. Good luck! Wishing you good health!
