Trying to Get Pregnant

Question for all the BBT ladies!

Well helloooo ladies! Here i am..still not temping until next cycle! Lol I sware if i don't get my BFP this cycle I will order that BBT! So here is my question. I happen to really like OpKs and I got pregnant very quickly the first time with using them. Cycle 2 after stopping BC. I only can get a positive OPK in the evening. This is my second cycle TTCagain and once again I just got a positive OPK this evening. So once I start temping next cycle does this make a difference? Meaning will I not see a temp rise because of this? I should also add I can only get a postive ONCE in my cycle instead of the advertised TWO positive days which leads me to believe I have a very short surge. Any feedback is welcome!

Re: Question for all the BBT ladies!

  • You will always see a temp rise the day after you ovulate. Thats what shows you ovulated. Whether you get a pos OPK the day before or day of or two days before doesnt affect the rise. OPKs are great as long as you recognize they are only telling you that you MIGHT be close to ovulating soon. Some women recommend using them teice a day so you can figure out your surge length. Some people have a quick one, some for three days. But either way, there is no way to know in that time frame when the O happened. If you like them, keep using them but only as a "we should start BDing more" and not verification of the O.

  • You generally need a few pre-o temps to see the temp rise, so it might be too late. But no harm in temping if you want.

  • I'll start temping next cycle. We generally BD every other day anyway when not TTC so I'm not so worried about missing my window. I think I am just addicted to using these things! I regret not temping this cycle to see if i am ovulating after my MC and going back off BC. Just wondering if having my surge at night every time makes a difference in my ability to see ovulation with a temp.
  • Nope. It shouldnt change that. Doesnt matter when ovulation happens. If you do, there will always be a temp shift.

No. That doesn't matter. I'm curious why you think it would?

  • Well because I don't follow instruction well and didn't read that book or start temping? Lol I never really looked into it before reading these boards and seeing all the great info. My doctor never talked about it I guess because I did get pregnant so quickly last time. I just have seen a pattern of me only getting a postive OPK at night. I'm aware it doesn't tell me if i ovulated only the surge I just thought it was odd I don't see a positive in the morning on any cycle I have ever tested. I can get a positive at night, test the next morning and get a negative

I still don't understand why you think a temp shift wouldn't show because you get your pos opk at night?

  • @TheBorg7of9 because I don't really know much about temping which is why I asked you ladies. I downloaded FF to watch the tutorials I just haven't had the time to watch yet.
  • Silly question now that I think about it! Maybe it's the 55 hour work week that has fried my brain tonight!
  • I also got pregnant quickly the first time around using opk only.
And here I am cycle #9 of trying for #2 using opk and nothing has happened yet.
I decided to add in bbt last cycle and so far it's not so bad!!
    Good luck to you!!
  • Thanks! I am going to purchase my bbt If I get my AF this cycle. I get pretty solid sleep and wake up the same time every morning so it should be easy to incorporate!

I'm not trying to make you feel bad, just trying to understand the root of your confusion so I could clear it up. :)

Sometimes lh surges are shorter than 12 hours. That's why testing 2-3 times a day is sometimes a good idea. And it's common for the surge to show up later in the day. That's why some opks say to test between 10am and 8pm.

  • Surges vary. I still recommend temping. OPKs are great, but they limit your knowledge of your cycle.

I'm one of those people that would likely miss my window if I relied too heavily on OPKs. While I like them, they are also a pain in my ass at times.
  • Agreed. Hubby works nights so it's frustrating to see the positive OPK in the evening and then having to go to bed knowing I may miss that surge! Hoping BD this morning and yesterday will be good enough! If not next cycle it is with temping!
  • @TheBorg7of9 you didn't make me feel bad! It just didn't make sense in my head for a second there.

Well, the length of the surge does not determine how soon you will ovulate. The general rule still applies. Ovulation is supposed to occur in 12-36 hours after the surge starts, no matter how long the surge lasts.

  • Yea we work opposite schedules so I may not see him tonight into tomorrow night so almost a full 24 hours after the positive OPK. So I'll just hope this morning was enough and try to sneak in another BD tomorrow night or Sunday and keep my fingers crossed. Next cycle I'll temp to get rid of the anxiety of the unknown.

Do not make sex for a baby priority. Make you relationship one. My one piece of advice is put your relationship first; if you have sex during your fertile window, great. If not, don't stress about it.
  • We don't make Sex for a baby a priority we just make sex in general a priority! It's so easy with working opposite schedules to fall into the "I'm to tiered" mode. We are like passing ships sometimes so it's either I stay up until he comes home or he gets up extra early before I go to work. Sucky but that's our life right now so we are making it work! I'm not in a rush at this point especially after having a loss with our first pregnancy so we are just hoping for the best but not expecting it this time around.
