Swollen lady parts

Bit of an embarrassing question but I am three weeks post-partum and am suddenly a lot more uncomfortable 'down there' due to swelling of my right labia, is this normal? It is suddenly harder to walk and sit down as my vagina feels quite inflamed.

I had an episiotomy and my stitches have been healing well. I have been almost pain free for a week or so prior to this and my blood loss is lessening.

Called my doctors this morning but they are closed for the Easter weekend. Not sure if this is just a normal part of recovery given that our bits have taken a bit of a battering or a cause for concern? I don't want to waste time going to the emergency room if it's something that can wait until next week when I can see my doctor. It isn't painful, just irritating.

Anybody else experienced this?

Thanks :)

Re: Swollen lady parts

  • I personally would go to emerg. I'm 15 days pp and had stitches, and while I'm not wiping yet, I'm not in pain anymore. A girl I know gave birth 2 weeks before me and last week she ended up in emerg, turns out her stitches were infected!

  • That would be my concern, too. Stitches can become infected. Can you reach the oncall provider? They might be able to give you some advice about where to go to be evaluated since it might be overkill to go to the ER. If there is no one to reach from your practice, perhaps you can go to an Urgent Care. The ER can be really expensive for nonemergent issues!
  • I'm in the UK so luckily get healthcare on the NHS. Still at home with a newborn though and don't drive so can't get to ER quickly. Also seems like overkill, I agree!

I have called the out of hours service and am waiting for a call back from a doctor. Great advice, thank you. Xx
  • In the mean time try ice packs. Good luck. Hope it's something not serious! Jumping over from April 15
  • Thank you ladies. Very good advice as turns out my stitches were infected. Am on a course of antibiotics so all should be cleared up after a few days :)
  • I'm swollen a bit still but not having pain... Didn't know if that was normal or not. After reading this thread I might call my doctor!
