Gender advice

Hi ladies,

My boyfriend and I are expecting our first :) Were are both very excited and were so anxious to see our little one and find out baby's gender at our AS appointment last week. We were especially eager to find out baby's gender because we had a gender reveal get together planned with our families the following weekend. However, unfortunately our tech was difficult and confusing when it came to baby's gender. She told us she didn't see any boy parts but wasn't going to tell us it's a girl because you can never be 100% sure. I told her we had a gender reveal party with our families and she told us "oh yea I wouldn't do all that" which was kind of disturbing to me because we were so excited for it. She also kept calling our baby "she" but then kept taking it back. It was so annoying. I get that they can't be 100% sure but I have gone to AS appointments with a few of my girlfriends in the past and never have I come across a tech that was so complicated. We looked between baby's legs several times and from different angles and she just kept saying it looks like a girl but not to quote her on it.

Maybe you ladies can help ease my mind a little? Here are some pics of my little one. What do you ladies think? Baby's bottom is at the left corner of the screen.

Re: Gender advice

  • If your US tech was confident one way or the other she would have given you a for sure answer. If she didn't, I would take that as she couldn't get a good enough image to feel confident. And when there is s gender mistake, it is usually saying its a girl when it's actually a boy.

  • I would not have a gender reveal party if the ultrasound technician or your doctor were not sure of the sex. I would not trust people on the Internet to get it right
  • I second the others that say not to out stock in any particular sex at this point.  However, that is super weird that the tech "couldn't tell".  I would bring this up to your doctor and see if you could get another tech or appointment.  I know this isn't a super big deal, but jeeze.

We had a blood test early on that determined this baby is a girl.  However, with our first, the ultrasound tech was certain she was a girl as she identified the labia when scanning the genitals.

  • I would not move forward with a reveal if you don't know for sure what you are having.

How far along were you?  If the tech doesn't have the best machine and you were still at the early weeks of being able to see, maybe she was not confident about whether it was a boy or girl.

Maybe you could go to a place in your area that specializes in pregnancy ultrasound services. It would cost you a little, but you may get a sure answer on a different day or from a different person! :) Hope you find out in time!!! I'm so excited to know the gender too!
  • Thank you ladies for your responses. I was 20 weeks 4 days the day of my ultrasound. The tech did point out a labia several times which to me looked pretty clear but I am not a tech to verify. However, she kept telling us that she never likes to be a 100% sure with girls. She said most techs would go ahead and tell me I am having a girl based off what she was seeing but she said she wasn't going to do that because she doesn't like to with girls. I know super confusing/frustrating. It's driving me crazy!!

  • Sounds to me like the tech couldn't get a full view of the crotch area. If she was only getting a partial, she probably did not want to commit to a girl because boy parts may have been tucked up some out of her view. It may seem like the tech was being difficult, but odds are your baby is the one who was not cooperating.
  • Thanks for the help :) I am going to call my doctor today and see what he has to say. Hopefully I can verify if I am team pink or team blue very soon!!
  • I had this same thing happen at my ultrasound. Baby had their legs crossed at the calf and wasn't cooperating with the tech! My tech actually said the same words "I don't see boy parts, but I'm not confident saying girl." My insurance won't cover anymore ultrasounds since baby is healthy (yay! :)) so DH and I found a place that does elective ones for gender reveal and 3D ones later on. We went in and they said they would definitely get a clear shot and they did! All girl!
  • Would you really trust the opinion (I'm not a trained tech) on the sex of your baby for your party?

If you weren't happy with your AS experience you can always opt for an elective US. These things happen. Sometimes techs just aren't sure.

  • Go do an elective AS maybe another tech can see the baby's parts better
  • You're more than likely going to have to do an elective scan and pay out of pocket. Although gender is super important to us, it's not important to the doctor at all and he will not let you have another ultrasound just to find out the gender.
  • I don't think the tech was being difficult, there would be no reason for her not to tell you. At our a/s the baby wouldn't move and we couldn't see the sex. We are going back because they couldn't get the measurements they need so hopefully baby will cooperate. I know it's disappointing, I was bummed. Did they mention getting another scan?
  • I spoke with my doctor earlier today and she told me the tech never confirms gender for girls because she had a bad experience years ago & mistaked a boy for a girl. She said the only way the tech gives patients a clear answer is if she sees obvious boy parts. She recommended me getting a 3D/4D ultrasound to confirm gender which I planned on doing anyway but I am just a little bummed that I have to wait even longer to find out gender than I thought. I can't schedule another ultrasound with my doctor until I am 34 weeks & there is no way I can wait that long to get gender confirmed!!
