Weird Pregnancy Quirks... Nesting?

I don't really consider nesting a symptom of pregnancy, but this third trimester has me doing some quirky things!

I'm obsessed with soapy sponges. I want to soap up everything. The more bubbles, the better. I scrubbed my disgusting porch with soap and water, magic erasered the walls and baseboards of our entire house, and I keep daydreaming about washing the car.

I'm getting more sensitive to strong smells, too. Rubber, gasoline, tennis balls, etc. smell lovely to me.

Who else has a weird quirk to confess??

No quirk to confess, but you are welcome to come over any time you like.  I have plenty you can scrub!

Seriously-- something is wrong with me. I HATE cleaning and all I want to do is play with soapy bubbles and scrub things. Haha.
My husband told me to get a sponge and rent a shower stall at a truck stop and go to town! Haha!

No kidding. I'll second that one!

  • I'm nesting but making my husband do the work! haha. In my defense I'm a tax accountant so this is my busy season and I'm working ungodly hours. But I told him I was going to put together a little to-do list for him regarding things that need to be done around the house. Truly, I only had 3 items on it to start but once I really got to thinking the list ended up having 43 items on it haha! Get crankin' honey!
  • @Westypet you are not alone! Seems like you are in total nesting mode! With my first I wanted to clean and wash EVERYTHING! I started noticing little nooks and crannies around our apartment that I just had to clean too! DH thought I was being too much of a clean freak.

However, this time around not so much. Maybe it'll hit me later but I'm not as paranoid about dirt and germs like when I was a FTM.
  • We have this wool rug in our living room that I love but it sheds like crazy. I've become obsessed with vacuuming it like twice a day. It's just crazy how much fiber comes off the rug!! Hoping if I keep sucking it all off it won't be so dusty by the time baby comes.
  • I just took apart my makeup drawer and washed everything in there! Cleaned and sanitized! Lids off of things and wiped down, brushes cleaned and dried..I'm so excited to put makeup on now! Everything has a place and it must be in it. I was a little ADD about things before but now is worse. All in good fun though, I'm not obsessing over it.

  • I can understand this... I been on a bubble kick too and I love the smell of cleaning stuff. Like my organic granite cleaner.. Mmm
  • It is funny how the closer I get to my due date (two months!) the more organizing files, washing my kitchen cabinets, and dusting every conceivable surface sounds like the best possible use of (all) free time.
  • About 3 weeks ago the bar you hang clothes on in my closet broke clean in half. (Yes, apparently I have too many clothes) Anyway, I've been fine with just having the clothes still on their hangers and laid over on the floor, until today. Today I wanted that bar replaced, dang it! And I also wanted to start moving clothes out of Ewok's closet into the other guest bedroom, but I had to go to the store and clean the kitchen today. But once I finished with the kitchen I took some stuff upstairs and put away some other stuff that had been put off. It's creeping up on me. I find myself doing just one or two extra things each time I do something. And yes, more often I am thinking - you know, I'd really like to dust / vacuum / sweep that.

I feel like I have no free time to clean, but it's all I want to do! I actually spent my rest time today looking at pinterest for cleaning projects to do that use lots of sudsy soap. Who has the time?? Haha or energy? I actually scrubbed half the porch car wash style.
  • Oh my gosh! I'm totally on board with you! I've been obsessed with anything and everything suds! Especially brushing my teeth! I can't get enough. Tools and tools of different types of paste! It's not even about them being clean, I just love the foam the bubbles etc. I also love just foamy cleaning things like scrubbing the sinks etc, even cleaning the toilet! I honestly thought I was the only one! I even asked my doctor, he said he thought it was another format of pica. Thank god for you! I mean that, I totally understand but have no idea what the obsession with scrubbing with bubbles is all about. Wish I knew! !!!
  • @hoodoll82 That's me and the dishes. It REALLY bothers me that my husband only does the dishes a few times a week, because I would do them everyday (and he would let me). So I either have to just ignore the stack of them on the counter, or do them myself. Seeing as I expect very little of him in regards to housework, I just bit my tongue and ignore them. He's not getting off the hook that easily!

  • I am pretty lazy and never into housework... The nesting bug hits me in odd and somewhat useless ways (like sorting through random bins in the basement while the dishes are piled in the sink!)
  • @Mommaswizz I too have been purging my belongings. I do have a big pile of stuff for the neighborhood garage sale in May. Now that's driving me crazy. Just want to take it all to Goodwill but there is really nice stuff and it will be extra $ for baby stuff
  • My bf and I did a whole spring cleaning/re-arranging our apartment and right now our deck is the new storage space for everything we don't want. I got rid of a bunch of clothes and stuff and it's all sitting on the deck waiting to go to donation. We've been vacuuming and cleaning and trying to make our apartment a little more spacious. The only thing really left to do after this is to wash all of the baby clothes.
  • I have not been hit with nesting AT ALL. You guys make me realize just how much of a slacker I really am. Of course, with the majority of my family coming over Sunday, I'll definitely be cleaning Saturday!

Nah... You're not a slacker. You're just not Psycho Suds McGee over here that dreams about bubbles and wants to use all her energy on soap.

But... don't make me fold laundry. That's not soapy and in no way part of my nesting urges!
  • On another weird quirks note:
Anyone attracted to strange smells? I've been so nauseous and sensitive to smells since day one, but I have an intense desire to smell tennis balls and rubber. I'm not eating anything odd, but dang! I'm like "mm that smells good!"
  • My last pregnancy I became obsessed with bathing the pets... Two cats and a dog! I think they are all rallying to make sure that doesn't happen again but they were really good sports through the whole ordeal!

This is soo funny.  I seriously have had the urge the past 2 weeks to get both of my dogs in the tub.  We usually take them to the groomer, but I just have this need to do it myself this time.  We have 2 big dogs, a German Shepherd and a Newfoundland... so it's no easy task, but the weather is warming up and I may be able to bathe them outside this weekend finally.

I definitely have nesting urges, but I'm trying to suppress them until the end of April because if I give into them, I will NOT get my schoolwork done.

On the topic of dishes, I get torn between being frustrated with DH for not doing them as often as I do and wishing that I was the only one doing them all the time because he's not quite as meticulous about scrubbing all of the food off of them as I am. Poor guy can't win!

  • I'm not nesting at home yet, but am at work, so to speak-getting ready for my maternity leave! I'm working up until I go into labor so I still have two months left, give or take, but I've never been more organized at my office ever in 14 years!  I've meticulously written up step by step instructions on how to do my daily duties - written out by each day of the month,  meticulous step-by-step instructions for work in my accounting program for all of the processes, bidding instrcutions, and have also organized my four huge filing cabinets and have cleaned out old and unnecessary files that I've been meaning to go through for years. So, I guess I'll be ok to leave my job when when I need to, even it was tomorrow.

Kudos to all who have started nesting at home-if it wasn't for my husband, the nursery wouldn't even be put together yet, lol. Thankfully that is all done at least. My husband even keeps saying I need to start nesting, and I just blow him off by saying 'eh, I've still got weeks left'. We'll see when it happens-hopefully it'll be sooner than later.

  • I want this nesting bug to hit! I have so much to do in the next two months. I have no motivation what so ever to go through any of the shower gifts, or to put anything away...
  • I want to paint every room in the house! My poor husband! HAHAHAHA Just finished painting the master bedroom!
  • I'm jealous of all of your cleaning urges!! I can the urge to clean something and then I remember Netflix and get lost watching Mad Men the whole day!
  • I figured it out! My husband is doing the nesting for both of us! He spent the entire weekend moving furniture up and down staircases to finish the nursery. And he's obsessed with getting the room right. He didn't like the white tint of the trim and repainted to a color he liked more. I just want it to be done! He's hilarious
  • My husband had a little nesting symptoms, getting babyroom finished. I have serious OCD so I clean and clean and organize...like I never did before like ALL DAY....lol
  • I've become obsessed with cleanliness too. OBSESSED. Like I can't stand any dirt or dust on anything. I have also arranged to have our floors sanded and repolished, am painting the trim and skirting boards, hanging new curtains, new light fittings and getting new bench tops and stove/sink tap for our kitchen. Just a little bit of nesting lol!
  • I'm being super weird about germs and the fridge being clean. I want it spotless in there and wipe it down quite a bit. I also cleaned my whole kitchen from top to bottom last Friday.
