Ahhhh I'm leaking!

so I am FTM and everything is really new to me. I have been researching and reading so many different things. But reading and it actually happening are two different things!!! I am 30 weeks and 6 days and today my "girls" started leaking. I know it happens but it freaked me out. Today I have leaked twice on one boob and once the other. Is it normal to leak that often? And do yall do anything to help with leaks? What about pads?

I'm a FTM, too :) If you browse through the symptoms threads, you'll see this is definitely a normal symptom! I've been experiencing this for the past few months, actually. I haven't gotten any pads yet though because, though they leak frequently, mine really aren't leaking enough that it's going through my bra -- the insides of my bras are slightly discolored now but I'm not really too worried about that. When you ask if we have anything to help with leaks, are you asking if there's a way to stop them? Unfortunately I don't think there is; if there is, I haven't discovered it yet. I know it can be kind of gross, but try to think of it as one more way that your body is preparing for baby. This is totally healthy and normal!

@hoodoll82 and @mellymar I'm not leaking either and also feel inferior! Lol. Although the minute I start, I'll want it to stop!

Count me in on the "no leakage club."
  • I'm leaking!!! Just lefty though. Not a ton, maybe a quarter size here and there. Oftentimes overnight. Doctor said it was normal - so long as I didn't have any vision problems along with it? Not sure I understand the correlation there but ok!

The vision thing is interesting. Did he say what kind of vision problems? I have HORRIBLE eyesight so if it was blurry vision I probably wouldn't realize that anything was going on.

  • Does leaking mean anything for milk production when baby comes? Like, if you're leaking already does that mean your body can produce more milk or better than someone who isn't leaking yet? Or is there no relation whatsoever?

I'm not leaking. Every so often I'll have like a drop, but nothing real

Vision problems with leakage can signify a brain tumor of the pituitary gland. As your milk comes in, your prolactin (hormone levels) will increase causing the tumor to grow, potentially causing vision problems or even a stroke. Extreme, but real. I have this condition and have been having MRIs to monitor the size of my tumor. Fun, huh? :)

My doc said no correlation. This is exactly what I was spooked about, that if I'm not leaking now it meant I'd have low production. He said some people won't even start producing milk until they deliver the baby and there's nothing to worry about.

  • See @hoodoll82 you aren't alone. We have a bunch of non leakers. I have been leaking since 15 weeks. It's killing my nips. They stay raw.

I was reading this and my 'how does it work?' part of my brain was like 'oh wow, really interesting' and then I got to the bottom and all of a sudden, not so much. I seem to remember you talking about a tumor before, with vision and headache issues, but that really sucks that it correlates with milk production. Well, I mean, it really sucks, period. The milk production part is kinda like an added insult. I hope everything improves for you.

  • @kbbtah I admire your strength and resilience. Your positive attitude about it all is refreshing. ❤️
  • Thanks ladies! Really, really appreciate the support. :):)
  • @kbbtah I agree with all the previous posters! You are a rock star!!!
  • It's normal to leak and it's normal to not. I didn't leaks ever with my first daughter and still breast fed for over a year. And I still haven't leaked this preganncy. :)
  • I haven't leaked yet but now I'm scared that I'm going to start at the most embrassing time! Haha!

I have this condition too. My last MRI showed my tumor had practically shrunk back to normal size right before I found out I was pregnant. My doctor decided against MRIs throughout my pregnancy unless I showed signs (vision changes) that it had grown back enough to cause a problem.
I will have to have an MRI after I deliver but since I plan on breastfeeding I won't be put on the medication as long as it's still a smaller size.
  • @moz3518 what a small world! Sorry you have to deal with this too but it is reassuring to know there are others out there who are going through the same thing. Sounds like you have great docs to monitor you too.
  • as a non-leaker, I wasn't clicking this thread out of fear and jealousy. was going to ask my doc about this on Tuesday. so grateful to see all ends of the spectrum represented here. thanks for reporting back, @hoodoll82 and big props to @kbbtah for being a positive light amid serious struggles. Wishing everyone good boobie luck!!
