2nd Trimester

Sorry - I just saw your response. We lived in Manhattan this summer while DH did his summer internship, but I think we'll be moving to Nassau County.  I told DH there was no way in hell I was ever paying $2000 a month to live in a 2 room, 350 sqft apartment ever again. Especially not with a dog and a baby!!!

Where are you living?

Re: *penguingrrl*

  • We're in Manhattan.  DH is at Columbia and we're in University student family housing.  Since it's a U subsidized apartment living outside the city and commuting in would actually cost us more, although we would love two bedrooms lol!

  • Gotcha. We looked into student housing over the summer because we're both law students, but it actually seemed more expensive than subletting! We eventually found something on the UWS. NYC in general is so ridiculously expensive! How much longer does DH have with school?
  • Yeah, NYC is crazy! DH is 1 1/2 years into a 4-5 year program (depends on his research). Hopefully he'll be finished in 4 years, but we're okay with going a 5th year. They won't fund past then, so he has to be done then! Student housing at Columbia is really good if you're there long-term... we're paying $1500 for 650 square feet in a great neighborhood... scarily that's really low!  But I've heard affordable short-term housing in the city is really hard to come by.  What type of law are you/your husband in?  Are you going to be practicing in NY or doing another internship?

  • Yes, $1500 is super low.

I'm going to be staying at home with the baby... if I can manage to pass the bar this summer, I'll try to do something PT from home. DH will be working for a big firm in Manhattan so he'll be commuting into the city. DH is from NY originally so I'm the only real transplant :)

  • I'm home with DD too.  I do museum work (my degree is in history), but salaries in that didn't line up with daycare even for one around here, which is part of why we're having #2 now.  I figure it will keep me out of the workforce a shorter time to have my kids back to back!  Well congrats and good luck to you guys!   Sounds like you have an exciting year ahead!

Back-to-back (to-back-to-back) is our plan too. We should get together once we move there - I don't know too many people out there, especially with babies! Congratulations to you as well!

  • We definitely should get together!  We plan on having #3 when #1 is 5 and #2 is 3 because I want to have them close together and be done lol!  I'll "see" you around and definitely stay in touch!
