April 2015 Moms

went to the doctor today

He's officially labeled me as high risk. I'm 36 weeks and the baby is under 5 pounds and measuring at 34 weeks. I have an appointment with the new doctor on the 13th cause that's the soonest they can get me in. My old doctor is gonna take me till that time.
I'm really scared for my baby and I just feel helpless cause there's nothing I can do.

  • You may want to do a little research into how inaccurate weight readings from ultrasounds can be... it's not an exact science by any stretch of the imagination...
  • Loading the player...
  • I know there aren't 100% accurate. And I'm sure the doctor knows that's too. But still he's labeling me as high risk because of that. So it must be enough of a problem for him to do that.

  • My daughter weighed about 4lbs at like 37 weeks and was measuring like 32 weeks. I had to go to the high risk but they never told me why she was so small. I got induced on my original due date because she wasn't really growing. She weighed 5 lbs 5 ozs, healthy as can be. The ultrasound they did days before said she was under 5. Which obviously was a little off. But like I said she was healthy and came home in 24 hours and grew fine. She's on the small side but both my kids are small.
  • Thanks that helps me feel a lot better!

  • Wih my first they sent me for extra ultrasounds toward the end and the last at 37 weeks saying they thought she was measuring too small. I gave birth to a 7Ibs 11 baby! Hope everything turns out allright for you and baby.
  • I find out tomorrow but my baby is under the 10th percentile, so they will let me know if inducing me tomorrow or this weekend. Good luck.

hang on ther..things will be better
  • Are you being referred to a maternal-fetal-medicine clinic?

I hope all works out well.

Two weeks ago for one of my ultrasounds they told me that the baby was in the 24th%. I don't understand why they would possibly be inducing you if your baby was bellow 10? It seems to me it would be smarter to keep the baby in as long as possible because it's tiny?

    @CivilMommy

I'm not sure if the doctor is or not. I'm not really sure what that kind of doctor is. All I was told was high risk doctor.

  • I see a MFM. Their ultrasounds are more accurate.

    Good luck to you.

They induce if the baby is that small because it is likely IUGR, which means staying in longer will only prevent further growth. My sister was induced at 38 weeks for IUGR and her baby, while tiny (5lbs 4oz) is a healthy, thriving 3 year old today. So don't worry, the doctors will know and do what is best for you both! Best wishes to you two.
  • The doctor I have right now is sending me to the high risk doctor because he thinks it may be IUGR. Also, he is a maternal-fetal-medicine clinic. I called to ask.

  • A very good friend of mine went through the same thing only to have her baby have a little growth spurt and find out everything is going to be just fine. Breathe, momma! You'll be in good hands. Remember stressing won't be good for the little one.

Sharing my story about maternal fetal medicine & inaccurate weight predictions - MFM docs terrified me with my first baby & forced induction @ 38 weeks.
They said they were sure baby would be "enormous" @ 9lbs+ due to my gestational diabetes & other complications.
She was actually 6.3 lbs & totally not ready to come @ 38 weeks. Man o' man did they pump me pull of pitocin. I was in labor for two days & it was so unpleasant & unnecessary.

Needless to say, I realllllly dislike MFM specialists & don't think highly of their high tech gadgets or methods. I'm grateful I was able to avoid that bunch this second time around.

My advice to you is ask a lot of questions & try to stay as informed as possible. Also always ask about options. Wishing u & ur little one all the very best.

The 13th is almost 2 weeks from now. I would push to have an earlier one, especially if they labelled you as high risk.

  • With my last baby they labelled her IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) and kept telling me they may need to induce her early if she stopped growing. However, she decided to come a little early herself at 37w when my water broke. She was 7lbs 10z at 37w, so definitely not IUGR. This was after multiple US saying she was.

I thought the same thing when the doctors office scheduled me the appointment, so I actually called them to see if I could bump it up. No such luck they said that that was the first appointment that had.

Also, I find it interesting that my doctor didn't put me on bed rest. The people that did have IUGR did they put you on bed rest or was it not necessary? Cause now every time I stand up  have contractions. They aren't painful just pressure and tightening of the stomach. But I don't want to be at work and go into labor because I should of stopped working by now but he didn't tell me that I shoudl be on bed rest. Ya know?

  • Are you sure they don't just have your due date wrong? I was supposed to be 37 1/2 weeks at my last appointment and baby was measuring at 36 weeks and 7 pounds so they just changed the due date. Sending good thoughts your way!
  • When I got pregnant. I told them that I didn't know when my last period was because I've always been irregular. So they did a dating ultrasound. For April 28th. I've had 8 done so far and they've all said April 28th except for the last 2 that said two weeks behind that.
