Ribs and heartburn

9 weeks left and I'm miserable. I have intense right side rib pain. Stretching doesn't help, plus my son loves to kick that side. And the heartburn... I heard it's normal, but waking up from a dead sleep to vomit from the heartburn is the worst!!! Anything I can do to subdue the severity of these 2? I would like to be one of those happy pregnant ladies who enjoy this time in their life.

Re: Ribs and heartburn

  • My doctor let me know its ok to use Tums and Rolaids. There was something else stronger she mentioned but I forgot. If you're not already taking something for the heartburn, definitely find out what you can take. No idea about the rib pain though.

  • I take tums before bed, but it's not touching it. My boss said she was prescribed nexium. I'm almost tempted to ask at this next appointment. The rib pain is definitely more bothersome than the heartburn right now.
  • A friend whom recently have birth had horrible heartburn throughout her pregnancy. She had to sleep propped up on pillows, others have said sleeping in a recliner helps. I think
my doc said I could take Zantac 75 for my heartburn, but check with your doc or nurse line on what they recommend. Also eating smaller more frequent meals helps.
  • I'm going to try propping up. I don't eat as much these days. The heartburn and lack of appetite make eating unenjoyable. Especially, when I have to force myself to eat things I normally love.
  • My doctor prescribed me Zantac and put 11 refills on the bottle. At the beginning of my pregnancy I was thinking "well there is no way I would use one bottle", I was wrong...I've gone through the first bottle and now I'm using Tums, but the Tums don't do much for me. I woke up at 2 this morning with crazy heartburn :/ not fun. Maybe you can find some relief. Good luck :)
  • Call your Dr. Don't wait for an appointment. But I was told I could take pepcid and nexium .. Ect. You shouldn't have to live in pain waiting for a damn appointment... Call your Dr... You pay them to take care of you.
  • Im also having INTENSE pain in right ribs, but im only 27 weeks. Going to dr. today and he may test my liver functions to determine if Im having a gall bladder attack. There's no way this pain is "just a part of pregnancy"...no way. Good luck!
  • I'm on a prescription for my heartburn and acid reflux... And using Zantac as a back up. Still getting up to puke at night from time to time. I try to sleep propped up on pillows. I also try to eat as bland as possible. It's not the most fun I've ever had.

  • I got that kind of pain too, was in hospital all night last night, my doctor is scheduling a ultrasound of my gallbladder as it could be gallstones, I would ask your gp about that, I know the pain and I would hate anyone to have to go through it, it's excruciating, best of luck :)
  • I was told Tums, Prilosec and Zantac are all fine. I opted for Zantac and started taking them last week as needed.
  • Also have bad rib pain on my left! I thought it was my spleen but I was told that it was not... they checked me out and said it was gas.. I find that eating smaller frequent meals, sleeping slightly up right and seltzer water with squeezed lime helped a lot.. you always want to try everything in your power before going to meds!
  • Nexium is over the counter and safe for pregnancy. Talk to your doctor. Rib pain not a lot you can do.
  • Talk to your Dr about an over the counter antacid. I'm on Prevacid to help control an autoimmune disease I have.
  • From the title of this post I thought OP ate some ribs and it gave her heartburn. Not gonna lie. I'm a little disappointed that wasn't true. Lol

  • I have the awful heartburn as well :( I take a pepcid before bed, sleep elevated on pillows, and don't eat two hours before I go to bed. These things seem to really help! Even drinking water once I'm in bed is a killer.
  • Zantac has been a life saver for me. Call your doc and ask about what OTC meds you can take. Mine also told me Pepcid, but I'm happy with the Zantac, so I haven't ventured elsewhere yet.

  • I'm just starting with the insane heartburn and rib pain. Last night at 2am I got up to pee (again) and drank some water and the water REFUSED to go anywhere and just hung out in my chest (guessing that is where all my organs are now) for an hour. I almost considered throwing it up but eventually found a position to let it dissipate. As for the pain: I really try not to take any acetaminophen bc my husband is crazy paranoid about everything I consume (so much fun...) so I've been taking Epsom salt baths with baby oil in them. I relax and watch Netflix on my computer and stretch and when I get out I'm all moisturized and ready to go to bed (it really helps ease the pain so I can at least fall asleep). So happy to be on this board. I feel like a majority of my friends are not as happy for me as I expected them to be! Lol.
  • The heartburn has been SUPER ugly this time around... I take a Pepcid every night before dinner and still eat 4-6 Tums a day. I try to avoid foods that would trigger the heartburn but really I get heartburn from drinking water LOL so it's not always avoidable. When it's really bad at night I sleep on the couch so I can sleep upright.

  • Thank you ladies! I have a list of OTC meds to take. I picked up some new stuff and will try it out. The rib pain, oh the rib pain... It's my ribs expanding and being kicked. My short torso is having a hard time keeping up with my burgeoning belly. Hubs was a 10 pounder at birth, this one might be as well. My poor body!!
  • Try laying on your left side! I've been having heart burn and vomiting and I seem to get at least temporary relief when I lay on my left. I feel your pain on the ribs but I don't know what to tell you except that it will all be over soon!
  • I read an article saying it could be a pinched nerve. It made a lot of sense. Just counting down these days...
  • I read the title of this thread and thought...mmmm ribs #-o
My second thought was oh that sucks that you are ribs and it gave you heartburn. Clearly I want ribs today. Lol
  • Doc confirmed its a pinched nerve. Now I want ribs lol
  • My doctor has me on Prevacid, which is OTC. It's an absolute Godsend - last two pregnancies, my heartburn was a nightmare (I, too, was waking up in the night to vomit...and it hurt like hell) but this time it's basically nonexistent.
  • I have had horrible heartburn my entire pregnancy. Tums and Zantac are the only heartburn meds I've been approved to take. But better than those is the change in my diet.
Melon instead of other fruit (even strawberry and blueberry) no red sauces or greasy food. No laying down after eating. Try to adjust your food intake. Might take a week or so before you see good results.

It sucks. But heartburn is WAY worse. And I hate taking meds, even the prescribed stuff.
  • At first I thought the OP meant that eating ribs gave her heartburn! I'm sorry it wasn't that, then you'd atleast know the answer! lol Im 31 weeks now and I too get kicked in the ribs every so often, it feels so weird- and hurts! And the heartburn sucks.. I take tums for it but it doesn't always work.. From things I've read, many OTC acid relievers are safe, but it's always best to double check. My mom tells me that heartburn is a sign that baby has hair on her head! Lol apparently that was true with my brother and I :-P. Sorry I wasn't more helpful but I hope you feel better!!! Xo
  • Sorry, I didn't read the last posts and replied too soon lol. Glad you figured it out!!
