A few postpartum questions...

hey mommas!

As a FTM I have a few questions...

I gave birth to our beautiful son 13 days ago and I've noticed a few things that I wasn't sure are considered "normal" about myself.

First I've noticed it looks like I have fried the ends of my hair. My roots are pretty oily but the ends look like crap!

Second my lower abdomen is SO itchy! I had an epidural during labour and experienced itching as s reaction (not the first time I've reacted) but I've never experienced something like this.

How long until stitches usually dissolve? Im not overly sore down there anymore and the bleeding is minimal but I'm scared to wipe down there for fear of the stitches hurting.

I have an appointment for our son with out GP on Tuesday so I can ask her anything that may be a true concern, just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same things?

Re: A few postpartum questions...

  • My hair felt fried after my first son was born. I don't know if it was coincidental or what, but starting the morning after my hair felt really shitty. It didn't happen this time. I had a med-free birth this time-around, maybe all the medications effected my hair...who knows. It was fine after trimming the crappy stuff off and babying it for awhile.

I have a lot of itching in my belly, too. I doubt it's still from your epi. I didn't get one and am still itchy. Probably just the skin settling back into normal (or its new normal lol).

Not sure about the stitches, sorry!

  • I had DD on March 7th. I didn't have hair issues or itching... But stitches take a few weeks per my doctor.:.I honestly played it super safe and treated it like they were still there for three weeks... Now almost a month PP I am comfortable enough to say they dissolved the second week... And my third week of care was out of paranoia!
  • My doctor told me three weeks for the stitches to dissolve as well. I've had dissolvable stitches in the past that have taken longer than expected to dissolve, so there is definitely a range of time that is normal.

As for the hair issue, that could very well be hormonal. A lot of times women will lose a lot of hair during the weeks after pregnancy.

I'm also having a lot of lower abdominal itching. I think it is just my body returning to normal. Although I was constantly itchy at the end of pregnancy, too, so maybe it's just a continuation of that.
  • My hair has been in desperate need of a trim for a few months now, so I can't say it's crappy condition is 100% birth related. Lol. However, I am experiencing crazy itchiness all over. Abdomen, arms, legs, and boobs. I believe it's due to the hormones flushing through your body and trying to get back to normal levels. At least that's what my doc has said to me. Other causes would be pain meds. Not the epidural, but the pain meds you got sent home with for recovery. If you got anything like hydrocodone, it can make you itch. I also experienced shakiness after I would wake up for the day or naps. Again, it was a result of adrenaline and hormone leftovers from birth.

Stitches take 4 to 6 weeks to dissolve completely. I wouldn't wipe at all if I still had some exposed. Even if it did not hurt, toilet paper could get stuck on them and cause infection. I'd still use the spray bottle and dab dry. Just to be safe.

    Hope that was helpful.
  • My hair is absolutely frazzled! The ends are insane! I had awful hair loss with my first, so this is new to me.

I also had a super itchy stomach for a couple of weeks. It was so bad i thought i was getting shingles again. Thankfully it only lasted a couple of weeks.
