Whats your opinion of Kai for a boy? We have a very long Scandinavian last name so we want something short and simple up front. I put forth a list of names but so far Kai is the only name DH has contributed that I don't hate. Behind the name says its origins are far and wide, with lots of different meanings. So, what say you fine ladies?

I've always liked it. I have a positive association with it: a cool, quirky guy from college. I see it as very hippish but I like that.

Don't like. Very surfer-ish and strange. I also think it would sound strange with a Scandinavian last name. What about Ian?

It would work fine with a Scandinavian name, it has history over there as well as Hawii.

I like it. I had a good friend in college named Kai and always thought it was a great name. He is an engineer for NASA, so I don't associate it with surfers or hippies.

Kai Ryssdal of Marketplace on public radio is the only one I have heard of, but I like him! It does seem a bit like a nickname, maybe for Kevin or something. I know it's not, it just seems like it could be.

DS has a classmate whose name is Kai....it's a girl.

I realize it's a masculine name, but she is my only frame of reference in real life. It suits her, actually.

Thank you ladies. My first thought was that the name was very Hawaiian but it's actually most popular in Germany, so it might not be too bad with our LN. Still not sold on it 100%, but I'll leave it on the list for now.
