Exercise while feeling so awful!

Anyone out there work full time who's experiencing morning sickness and still managing to exercise?? If so, HOW?! I miss the gym but I feel HORRIBLE in the morning and by the end of the work day I feel like I deserve a medal just for making it through. I used to be very active and I'm really struggling, my energy is low, I don't sleep through the night and I'm battling nausea most of the day. I'm so wiped out! Advice?

Re: Exercise while feeling so awful!

  • I don't have advice but this is me! I have made it a priority to continue going to the gym while pregnant to stay healthy and today the nausea hit me there was no way I could go! I am afraid it will be like this for awhile and I don't want to just give up the gym for that long.

  • I'm the same way. I feel bloated and so nauseated I don't want to get off the couch, let alone run. I have been jogging up until last week when I started cramping. Now I walk 3 miles a day. It doesn t seem like much since I was so active before but my bloat and nausea is kept a bay when I do. So even when I'm fighting fatigue I still push myself to walk.
  • Yep! I make sure I see a trainer once a week so I go at least that often. And I do it during the week after work, because if I'm going to get the energy to go on my own, it'll likely be a weekend. Can you do that or is there a class you can sign up for to keep you accountable?

(I did almost puke tonight and had, like, the worst workout ever, but at least I went!)

  • I'm with you 1000% and just found the energy to workout again today after about 10 days off. Today I dialed back the intensity significantly but it feel great just to get the blood pumping again. I think not working out might have been adding to my fatigue and misery. I would encourage you to try whatever you are comfortable with and see what happens. I'm with you every step.
  • I understand your pain. I'm staying home now, but with DD1, I worked full time as a teacher and was on my feet ALLLL day. I literally collapsed every evening on the couch- it was beyond exhausting. DH would bug me to go to the gym, but I compromised and did a quick walk with him after dinner pretty often. At least it was something I guess. I feel like you do what you can, but shouldnt stress if you can only do a short workout or a quick walk or something.

It's not that I need to be held accountable...until a few weeks ago I went to the gym 4-5 times a week...running, zumba, hot yoga, you name it. It's that I literally feel too exhausted and sick. I work full time and am also an adjunct prof. and teach a few nights a week. That's awesome that you are able to pull it off, good luck, but don't push yourself to the point of puking on a treadmill!
  • Don't stress yourself out. Once the sickness dies down, then slowly pick back up!!
  • I mean, I work full time and am getting my MBA at night, so I know busy and exhaustion, I'm just saying even when I'm exhausted, if I have an appt, I'm going to go. And if I puke I'll leave :)

  • I'm positive I'll go back when this subsides (and did go twice last week, hooray!!), hubs and I will walk after dinner, too, when it's not 30 degrees anymore (PRAYING that's soon)! I am just stressing/tired/feeling limited, which I hate. Thanks, everyone :)
  • I've been out for almost a month. Was on vacation and the past 3 weeks have been nauseous every am and Eve. I feel like I deserve a medal if I do a full loop around the block with the dogs. Baby steps! But think it's prob healthiest for us not to push to point we are sicker. Hopefully as I feel better and gets warmer I will be able to do more.
  • Im having the same problem. I used to train 5 days a week but now struggling to make it 2 - 3 times a week, and finding it makes me really nauseated afterwards. If i havent been vomiting too much i try to go. My coaches are aware and happy for me to scale the workouts as needed. Yesterday i found doing split jerks overheard (even with a lighter weight) made me light headed and ive cut out those burpees too. But otherwise trying when i can to keep exercising including squats, pull ups, sprints, and weightlifting. Im hoping i can get back to 5 days a week once morning sickness passes.
  • I used to lift weights 6 days a week, but the last time I tried lifting I ended up running to the locker room to throw up. I'm resorted to walking for 45-60 minutes. Not too fast because of the nausea but at least on a bit of an incline to keep my heart rate up. I did have to stop a few times because the cramping was too bad, but at least it's something to keep me active and burn some calories!! I'm hoping ones the nausea dies down I can at least start lifting lightly again!!
  • I am 6 weeks with my third child and I'm Back in school full time. Living in New England the weather has been absolutely brutal so I'm really hankering to get out and hike or walk. I'd also like to keep up with some mild strength training during this pregnancy. I'm so drained lately but I know that eating breakfast, drinking a ton of water, and getting good sleep at night are all helping me pull through. I want to try yoga as well and see if it helps with my energy levels. Does anyone have any advice other than these obvious things I just mentioned like healthy diet and water?

I totally understand. I never feel like I have enough energy to exercise anymore...

But when I do exercise, I actually feel better. Over the last month I've managed to squeeze in a few walks and jogs, and each time I actually feel a lot better when I'm done. (I'm also in California, so our weather has been nice.) The nausea goes away, the exhaustion goes away...for about 30 minutes, but it's a nice temporary relief. We just have to listen to our bodies, because some days I've passed up my workouts to take a nap and I think that can be worth it too. :)

  • This is me. I find if I go to the gym first thing in the morning it's the easiest. Also I have classes that I do in the afternoon (ex: spin) and I make myself go since it's a "scheduled" workout, and group classes are always quicker. Also it's nice when my husband goes with me.

I always feel a little better after working out. I planned to to this mornjng though and just couldn't get out of bed, so now I will use it as a rest day and make myself go thurs, fri & sat to make up for it.
  • Yes, I had terrible MS with DS & continued to work out the entire pregnancy.  I dialed down the intensity and kept the workouts to 30 minutes most days but longer if I felt good.

With this current pregnancy, I think my MS is even worse b/c I am vomiting a lot more often.  I think it's harder this time to keep it up, especially while dealing with a toddler, but I try to get 30 minutes in 5 days a week.  I do prenatal DVDs that are 30 min or less, take walks w/ stroller, ride the bike, even got in cross country skiing one weekend.  I absolutely have to eat a snack first and I keep a snack & water with me.  Prior to getting pregnant, I was running and doing more intense workouts but that is out of the question- I really don't think I could run without vomiting!   Now if I don't feel good, I tell myself I will just do 10 minutes & reassess.  I also work out at my own house so it makes it easier just to pop in a short workout..maybe you could keep prenatal DVDs available for days you don't feel like going to the gym.  There were definitely days I was feel pretty awful and wouldn't want to go to a public place for fear of vomiting.  :-/

If you are able to continue exercising, you definitely won't regret it.  I know a lot of people get out of the habit in the first trimester and its harder to pick it back up once you are out of the routine and out of shape.  Once you feel better, you will be thankful you were able to keep exercising because being in shape will make the rest of your pregnancy easier!
