What do people think of when they hear Berneice?

I'm asking this one because I can remember thinking of it as an ugly old lady name when I was a child. Of course, now that I am older I can appreciate it as having character. It was the name of my husband's grandmother and she practically raised him. It wouldn't be at the top of my list but I am considering adding it to my (already long) list of potential girl names. I am really loving the idea of calling her Bernie. I find that super cute.

Not to be rude, but it still sounds ugly to me.

  • I respect the name and wouldn't side eye it but I don't really like it. I would put it in the MN spot because it has signifigance.

Not rude, that's what I was wondering. Thanks.

Alyssa, I will definitely consider it for a middle name.
  • I prefer the more traditional spelling Bernice but other than that, I think it's a nice name. I knew a girl in college with that name who was gorgeous so I dont associate it with old ugly ladies lol
  • I think 'Hope Floats'. I'd love it in a middle name spot.
  • Not be favorite.
  • It still sounds old ladyish to me...if you want the Bernie nickname, how about Bernadette?
  • Other then the nn Bernie, I like it! It is kind of quirky to me.

Now that you mention it, his grandma may have spelled it Bernice. I'll have to check.
  • I kinda like Bernice.

I'd probably put it in the middle name spot,

While I would expect a Bernice to be older just because of naming trends, I think it's a decent name all around and wouldn't do a double take (or more importantly, a side eye) hearing that name.

It's not my favorite but it's not terrible either. I also prefer the traditional spelling, Bernice. I would use it as the middle name to honor your husband's grandmother.

  • I think of my mom's cat that I loved when she was still here. Other than that, I agree that it is reminiscent of an older, hunched over lady. However, I think names can be redefined sometimes when a little one carries it into adulthood. It isn't my style, but I prefer it well over any misspelled, made up name.
  • Don't care for it, but you could make it a Middle Name to honor her.
  • an old nasty lady
  • Old lady and nerdy
  • I kind of like it. I was considering Beatrice if we were having a girl but my fiancé nixed it.

  • I think of the girl scout in the movie Dodgeball that gets accused of taking horse steroids.

    This!
  • We learned a song in middle school about a cow named Bernice, so...yeah :/

Ditto. I couldn't do it as a FN but as a MN it's nice.

  • I looked up the obituary and she did spell her name Bernice. I had to look it up because my DH thought it was Berniece and I suspected that was wrong.
  • I think of "Weekend at Bernie's" for some random reason?? I think I am probably alone in this thought though! ;)
  • I immediately think of an older woman with really overdone hair. Not sure why, since I've never met a real life Berneice. I don't care for the nickname Bernie and also prefer the spelling Bernice.

If you do use it, I can't think of any negative associations. A lot of "old lady" names have made tremendous comebacks. I don't see any reason why Berneice/Bernice couldn't. I would suggest a more common middle name though so that if she absolutely hates it, she can go by something else.
