Baby poop/constipation problems

Hi everyone! Does anyone else have a baby that seems constipated or is having trouble with Bowel movements? My son seems to be in pain when trying to poop. Doctor suggested Karo syrup or thermometer to get things moving. The thermometer approach has worked. He said he does not suggest switching formula just yet. I am thinking about asking about probiotics too. Sorry, my thoughts are disorganized. Sleep deprivation will do that! Haha.

Re: Baby poop/constipation problems

  • @katmarie25 Same here, my girl has problems getting it out from time to time.. Sometimes it passes on its own but when she goes 3-4 days I use Children's laxative glycerin suppositories but they're for children 2+ so rather than using the whole thing I slice two thin pieces of the end and... Well you know the rest.. Works within the hour

  • Babies digestive systems are very slow in the beginning so it seems like they are constipated, but really the poop is just not moving as quickly as baby would like. It just takes some time for things to develop and improve, but it will. If your exclusively breastfeeding just make sure to drink lots of water so that your milk has plenty of fluid along with the dense milk. Good luck!
  • I'm having the same issue with my 6 week old baby. There are days where he poops great but some where you can tell he is really really pushing and nothing comes out. He does fart and burp constantly and his farts sound like man farts already lol. The doctor told me some pear or prune juice. The pear worked like 3x and I have only started on the prune recently. He went twice very good poops with the prune but I have it to him again yesterday and he has been trying to push but nothing. Idk what else to do. He is fussy and cries a lot. :(
  • I was using the glycerin suppositories and they worked great, but my daughter would go right back to constipation and gas. We decided to switch her formula to Emphamil Reguline and I have a new child. She has a bowel movement with no problems now.
  • Massaging the tummy, moving the legs around seems to help quite a bit. My doc gave me a sheet that gave instructions on using prune juice at day two or three (I think mixing a half ounce with half ounce of water and giving a half ounce of this mixture in between feedings), then using karo syrup on day four. I haven't had to do that yet, she seems to be on an every other day or every third day schedule now. I would check with your pediatrician to see what techniques they recommend. When I asked my doc about it she actually said she had seen a baby earlier that day that was on day nine of no pooping!!! That's intense but made me feel more at ease.
  • I have read that usually if a baby hasn't pooped by the third day it's considered constipation. So give it 2days. With my first born she suffered from constipation in the beginning. I boilded about 3 to 4 ounces of water with a little piece of celery. Of course I let it cool and gave her one ounce to drink. And bam! She pooped. It works wonders. Water works as a lubricant to their digestive system. I hope this was helpful. And good luck xoxo !
