I'm having a repeat c-section in a few days and I just would like some advice from all who have gone through one. I was very sick with my first and had to have an emergency c-section at 31 weeks. I don't remember much of that time because I had severe preeclampsia that turned into HELLP syndrome. I don't remember much of those days because I was kept doped up to keep my blood pressure down to keep from stroking out. So as a nervous second timer I feel like this is really the first time. My doctor isn't doing to surgery because he'll be off island(Guam), but he did explain the procedure but I'm more nervous and need advice about everything that happens after. Any help is welcomed.. Thank you in advance!
Re: Repeat C-section advice needed
--- shave your incision area before you head in
* show up about 2 hours prior and have and IV placed and blood work drawn and you will get a bag of ancef(antibiotic) and fluids and possibly an anti nausea/ heartburn med like Bicitra (super sour)
* monitors will be placed on your belly for contractions/ heart rate.
* you will meet with anesthesiologist and then when ready you will be taken to OR for your spinal of Duramorph ( feels like a bee sting to the middle of your back) once you are all blocked and ready the nurse will out in your Foley catheter and then your husband will be called in to OR to sit next to you after the team has done a Time out and everyone is in place and sterile field is up.
* you will not feel any pain, but will feel pressure as the help move baby out ( takes about 20 minutes). During this time try to talk to your husband or distract yourself cause your nerves will get the better of you.
* after little is pulled out she will immediately go to baby nurse for auctioning and quick assessment with apgars and weighing/measurement then they will bring her over to you for a kiss/snuggle.
* while you are getting repaired (30-45minutes) your husband may go with little one for a bath and then you will all be together in recovery room for about 2 hours before transfer to postpartum.
* You will be numb- the Duramorph slowly leaves your body in about 18 hours- you may have pain med orders of Toradol ( NSAID) and dilaudid(narcotic) all IV for breakthrough pain after about 18 hours you will have pain meds by mouth like Motrin and Percocet. Take them as the are available!!!' Don't be a hero or get behind on your meds, your regret it!!!
* catheter stays in about 10 hours after surgery(every hospital is different could be more).
* you will be on liquid diet and slowly advance from ice chips- water- soft food- regular diet once you are passing gas
* you will dangle at the side of your bed- then stand- then walk within the first 24 hours--- it's very important not to stay in bed in one position!!
* if you need to cough/ sneeze/ laugh brace your tummy with your hand or a small pillow.
* your pressure dressing/ bandage will be removed the following day.
That's all I have for now☺️
Good luck
I also had HELLP syndrome with my first and ended up with a c section!
