Postpartum workout?

I know exercise is everyone's least favorite topic in this stage of the game but I was wondering if anyone has thought about what they're going to do after the baby arrives to get back into shape? I wasn't exactly in tip-top condition when I got pregnant but I really do want to get healthier. So what are you planning on doing and how soon after delivery are you getting started? I was thinking about maybe hitting up the local park with my new jogging stroller but was probably going to wait until 6 weeks after delivery. Also, this may all change once I am completely and utterly exhausted with a brand new baby that I plan on breastfeeding exclusively. But ideas are always welcome!!!

Re: Postpartum workout?

  • I had hired a couch for training before I got pregnant, so I'm going to get back to the plan she made for me. It consists of a lot of weight training and a high protein diet. I'll talk to my doctor about when she thinks I could start and go from there. I'll definitely have to ease back into it because it is a pretty intense program.

  • I'm looking forward to working out too! (And have even thought about buying a new pair of running shoes before the baby arrives to prepare).

I was also not in my best shape before getting pregnant, not overweight, but not in a good workout/eating routine either. For some reason, being pregnant --- increasingly uncomfortable with little energy to spare --- especially in the third tri, has inspired me to want to be healthier once the baby arrives. It makes me realize how important it is to properly take care of yourself when you're fully able-bodied, especially when dealing with limited sleep and a hectic schedule due to our new arrival.

Because it will finally be summer weather, and I don't want to be trapped indoors, my plan is to get outdoors are walk with my little guy every day, either in a carrier or stroller. Once I'm feeling more recovered from the birth process, I'm hoping to take up running again. I figure if I can get outside an do just 2 miles a day before my DH leaves for work, that would be a great start. Also, I started following the Tone It Up girls about a year and a half ago. They have tons of workout videos and challenges that I might try too!

  • I was what I like to call a zumba-holic (and still am just can't go to any classes right now) so I cannot wait to get back into it! As soon as I have the ok from the doctor (hopefully 6-8 weeks after birth) I will be back at it! it's great for cardio and I will try to do it 2 times a week( I used to go 4-5 times a week but I know that will be unrealistic with a newborn) , plus some weight training.

We also live within two minutes of walking trails and I bought a jogging stroller / travel system so that hopefully I can get out walking right away and once July hits and it's actually warm enough where I live, I plan on using my parents pool to do some water aerobics. They only live 5 minutes away and I know they will be more than happy to cuddle the baby when I am there!

I also plan on breastfeeding but I plan on pumping and storing (fingers crossed that I can produce enough to freeze!) and introducing the bottle early on so that my husband can handle feeding time too :)

I'm hoping this plan will work out, I love the gym and have been a little shack happy since I haven't been able to go since January but the most important thing will be having a happy baby!

I used to hate the gym though and it was the classes like Zumba that got me excited about going and I actually made a great group of girlfriends from it and we keep each other motivated, so maybe that would work for you, a lot of  recreation and community centres put on fitness classes for cheap (or at least where I live they do).
  • I plan on doing crossfit after baby!
  • I plan on doing daily walks of at least a mile every day after the baby is born. Then two miles a day and then drop it down to one mile run, two mile walk on alternate days and then work up to alternating 2 mile walk/run days. Eventually I have to get to 3 miles alternating walk/run daily. I'll definitely get in some weights, abs and heavy bag training to mix it up.

I have to get back into shape quickly because 1) the Army expects me to be in kick ass condition 6 months after I have this baby and 2) I'm going to be the maid of honor at my BFF's wedding in Hawaii at Christmas.

I have big goals but I'm looking forward to working hard this summer and fall so I can lay on the beach in my bikini and tan my abs. :)
  • My hope is to get into a routine immediately of going for walks with baby daily. Then progressing to running a couple of times a week. Pre-pregnancy I had become a regular runner but that all stopped the minute morning sickness kicked in.

I'm also planning on breastfeeding and hope that will help to shed the pounds. I've definitely gained more than I had hoped in pregnancy. And if I don't lose the weight as easily as I hope then I will be going back onto weight watchers. I lost 30lbs on their program and kept it off for a year before getting pregnant. It worked great for me! So I'm hoping it'll do the trick again.

After my first pregnancy I lost all but about 8 pounds of the 40 that I gained in 4 months. I went walking with my DS every day. I tried to go at least 2 miles. I also did the biggest loser workout on the Xbox kinect 3 times a week. I plan on doing the same after I give birth. I'll start as soon as my doctor gives me the green light.
  • Walking right away, swimming as soon as I feel like it (my parents live across the road, and have a pool, lucky me), and ditto with the gym - as soon as I feel up to going and restarting my weights again.  I've spent the last 2 years getting in better shape, and losing a ton of weight before baby, so I don't want to lose all of it waiting too long, as long as I'm healthy.  My gym is good in that I can suspend my membership once I feel I can't go any more, and then restart it once I'm ready to go again.
  • I'm eager to get out hiking and scrambling on the trails as soon as the doctor will let me. I have a big trail dog ( rottie) that has a great "go for it" attitude and he's been unhappy with the lack of my "go for it" these past months. The trails are less than a mile from the house and I hear them calling with the thaw!
