Alcohol in Everything!

Was about to heat up some frozen veggie dumplings from trader joes and saw they have alcohol in them! Earlier this week I was craving brownies and bought a package without realizing it had chocolate liquor! I'm probably being extra cautious, but have you all noticed alcohol in foods you wouldn't think would contain it too?

  • Yes, it's completely safe when cooked. If it wasn't you'd have to be 21 to purchase those items!
  • Good to know! It's probably such a small amount that is in it that it probably doesn't matter anyways - I didn't realize that the alcohol would burn off anyways lol
  • I'm not sure what you have to do to get the alcohol to burn off, but I've gotten tipsy on rum cake that had alcohol boiled in sugar water and pored over the top of it. Damn now I really want a piece of rum cake.
  • If there was actually alcohol then there would be some warning about not for those under 21 or something. People feed those things to their kids.
  • @missliz53 Rum cake sounds AWESOME now!!!
  • Rum cake usually has a rum sauce which is made by boiling sugar before adding rum and then adding to already baked cake. The alcohol added at that point is not cooked off which is why you could feel tipsy. It's more like drinking straight up rum. cookedhttps://www.onceuponachef.com/2014/06/rum-cake.html

  • I would stay away from rum cake or balls, but cooking with wine and a little bit of alcohol that gets baked away really is fine. I even have the wine in the communion cup, that little cup is so small and it's only once a week. The warnings for not drinking alcohol are meant for women that drink heavy quantities during pregnancy.

I actually did a lot of research on this before we got pregnant, because I was worried that if I had a glass of wine before I knew the pregnancy test came back that I would do irreparable damage. It's just not the case. When the same studies that are done in America are repeated in France and Australia, they find that one glass of wine a week actually had no effect on the baby. Crazy, huh? You want to know why the studies in America are so different? Because in our culture it is frowned upon to drink while pregnant, so the "type of woman" that would drink during pregnancy is likely drinking a lot and in most cases they were also doing hard drugs like heroin and cocaine (seriously)... So I really would take that into consideration. A little in a baked good should be fine. The studies in France and Australia do show that beer should be avoided because the threshold for that to have an effect of the baby is much lower. And definitely stay away from hard liquor (like in a rum ball that is not cooked out). But, if you have the communion wine, or want a white wine sauce with your chicken, you should be fine. Hope that helps.

Yup cooking 102: if you cook wine the alcohol is the first thing that evaporates. So your all good there. (Cooking 101 is how to boil water ;) ) so enjoy your dumplings!
  • Lol I've actually never cooked with alcohol so had no clue! Thanks ladies :)
  • Well I have made a tres leches cake which is to die for but sadly I can't eat while pregnant :(( the rum is added after the cake has been cooked and cooled....and there is a ton lol. I would stay clear of that.
