Foods/Supplements to amp up breast milk production?

any suggestions or opinions on foods or supplements I can take to help increase milk production? Baby was born on Thursday so were obviously still in early days but while I am getting colustrum it is very minimal (approx 10 drops every feeding total). Just looking for some experiences from others to help our little guy out. So far nurses aren't concerned about his weight loss which is great. He's latching but not sucking the nipple which is why I think I'm having a production issue, we're having to hand feed him the colustrum...so we know he knows how to suck, just not off the nipple!

  • There are lots of recipes for lactation cookies on Pinterest & I know Earth Mama Angel Baby makes a milkmaid tea.

I hear oatmeal is a big one!
  • Eat oatmeal. Never tried them but heard lactation cookies and bars work great too. Also try taking fenugreek and you can drink mothers milk tea as well
  • You know what really works? Drink lots of liquids and feed/pump every 2 hours, even through the night. The more you stimulate your breasts, the more milk you will make. Everyone I know whose milk "dried up" were not feeding through the night. Your body will make milk as long as you drain your breasts regularly.
  • newborns stomachs are the size of a marble. 10 drops is probably enough! you'll likley produce more as you go but right now you really don't need much.
  • I would definitely start pumping in addition to nursing. I had to start pumping from the get go due to tongue tied baby. Took about 4 days for milk to come in after colostrum but I have an abundance now.
  • Don't worry about that until the colostrum stage has passed though. If you start taking in supplements before your milk has come in at all, you really may find yourself quite engorged. You will likely engorge anyhow so you don't want to add to that, I learned this the hard way! After your milk supply starts trying to establish itself the best way to increase supply is nurse nurse nurse... After that fenugreek

You may want to look up Dr jack Newman he is a pediatrician and BFinf expert, may be a tongue tie issue
  • Lots of good advice here, but I wanted to add that maybe you should go in and talk to a lactation consultant. Just having someone watch you and LO during a session can help tremendously.

  • I saw a lactation consultant twice while in hospital and she reassured me I'm doing everything right, he just needs time to catch on the skill to suck the nipple. Luckily where I live there are breastfeeding clinics twice a week, so I'll be going on Tuesday.
  • I saw both my pediatrician and lactation consultant; in addition to feeding every 2-3 hours, I'm taking fenugreek three times a day and also eating lactation cookies. They also suggested that I let the baby latch when I can (I pump too) I do see a difference but I still have to supplement with formula (via S.N.S.). It's not easy but I'm hoping my body will start producing more milk. My baby is 2 weeks old.
  • Mother's milk organic tea, drink lots of fluids and pump and nurse regularly.
  • Are you breastfeeding through the night? Waking baby and feeding every 2-3 hours WILL ramp up your supply. Drink plenty of water and eat lots of soup or watery foods. Make sure you do not take any decongestants as it will dry you out. Good luck!!!
