Rolling?

My LO is 22.5 weeks and still has made no effort to roll either direction. She gets tummy time and back play time. She's strong and holds her head up very well. She's sitting in a boppy pillow for 15-20 minutes of play time with good posture. She has good hand coordination. Just no effort to roll. Should I be doing something else to encourage her??

Re: Rolling?

  • I used to lay next my son and have him hold my finger with the hand farthest from me. Then I would guide him over towards me while still having him do most of the work. When they do roll, even if it's with help, make a big out of it. Cheer and smile and clap your hands.

Your LO will roll eventually. My ped says he doesn't start to worry until a baby is 8 months and not showing signs of rolling.

  • It could just be your LO doesn't want to roll over. My LO is 20 weeks and has rolled a few times but seems to not care. You can ask the doc but I would say if all else is good this just isn't one of those things to freak out and think there is something wrong. Sounds like your LO is doing everything else they are supposed to.

  • rolling is one of those milestones that can fall in a very large range of ages. kind of like teeth.

your LO sounds like she is doing just fine - she is just focused on other things. if you want to try to help her, try holding a toy she is interested in out to the side so that she has to reach for it. then keep going a bit at a time to see if you can get her moving to her side. that should help.

    don't fret, she'll get there.

  • 22 weeks no rolling here ..PT says at the rate he's going he will probably crawl before roll lol
  • My LO is now 28 wks and still doesn't roll, sits up like a champ and is even pulling up. I'm a bit worried that it's something I'm not doing to encourage it. I wonder if it's ok for babies to skip it all together...
  • I started to roll my baby over at four months.. And putting things out of reach that would interest him... But eventually he just started rolling over in his sleep when he was close to being 5months. So like everyone says, every baby is different & they all progress at different rates.
  • My little guy rolls all over the place, he was around 3-4 months when he started rolling, however he didn't really start playing with toys or using his hands much until closer to 5 months. Every baby is totally different and will develop at their own pace. They have so much to learn and not all of them learn the same things in the same order. As long as everything else seems normal I wouldn't worry too much!
