How do I convince my family 3D ultrasounds aren't dangerous???

My family, my mother in particular, is hell bent on me not getting a 3D ultrasound to determine the gender of the baby. My Aunt sent us a video about how the FDA is warning against them and I've done more research and think they're perfectly fine! However every time I bring them up to my mom she freaks out. Saying they're too risky blah blah blah. They're FINE!

Can you guys help me find a way to make her understand they're perfectly safe? If it were anyone else I wouldn't give a crap what they thought but my mom is my hero and best friend. I don't want her to be worried. Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Re: How do I convince my family 3D ultrasounds aren't dangerous???

  • I had the same problem at first. My MIL has a chiropractor she sees who is really natural. He told her to make sure I don't get too many ultrasounds. I asked my doctor about it because I really wanted to do an early scan and he looked at me like I was crazy for asking! He said he see's no problem with them and he was I school when his wife was pregnant with his first and she must have had like 90 ultrasounds. Once I told my MIL that she didn't bring it up again. We also went today at 14w5d and she is super excited that we're having a Boy!!! At first she didn't want us spending the extra money but in the end she's just as happy as we are knowing! It's not a lot of advise but hopefully it helps :)

@babs02 that's great advice actually! Thank you!! :) I didn't think to ask my OB, I kind if figured she'd probably say she didn't recommend it because it was unnecessary or something.. But I could call tomorrow and ask if they think they're dangerous at all and tell my mom the answer! :)

And congrats on the boy!!!! So exciting!
  • Always tell them "my doctor said it was fine"...The FDA is warning against excessive use because it does warm the tissue around baby, but is not dangerous in the slightest for the average number of ultrasounds a woman gets during pregnancy...and believe it or not some women were not going to their doctor to get appropriate prenatal care because they thought they could just pay the 50 bucks to 3D techs and be safe and sound (pretty stupid). I would say as long as you aren't getting an ultrasound every weekend, you are fine. I've been lectured on every aspect of life since I got pregnant, and telling people that my doctor said I'm okay is the best way to quiet them down. Good luck!
  • @mrscaterosales thank you for the advice. I appreciate it very much. :) I'll try to explain it to her from my perspective and if she still is freaking out, she'll get over it lol.

@bpv101283 yeah I hear you. I just wanted to try and calm her nerves before I scheduled one so she wasn't worried. Like I said, my mom is my best friend and hero. I wouldn't do anything that would intentionally upset her without trying to calm her nerves first, you know? But you're right, if she's super pushy about it I'll put my foot down. She knows I have no problem making my own decisions lol.

I guess that is why they told me to bring two forms of proof I have seen a regular OB, such as an appointment card or an ultrasound.
  • What about the women who have to have scans weekly due to problems?
The medical profession certainly wouldn't be carrying out weekly scans if they knew of any risk to the baby, after all they're checking to make sure baby is ok, not to cause any further problems. Good luck with your MIL. :-)
  • I agree with the previous advice and echo it, especially the part about grandparents learning boundaries early.  Remind her that there are OBs who actually offer and perform the 3D/4D ultrasounds in their own offices, as mine does.

3/4D ultrasounds completed at a medical facility by a trained medical professional are not dangerous. We had five ultrasounds with my first pregnancy (dating as I had just stopped the pill, NT, anatomy, and two growth ultrasounds as my fundal height was outside the normal range). All medically necessary. If my doctor offered a sex-reveal ultrasound at their facility with their tech, I would get that in a second!

Having said that, ultrasounds completed at "boutiques" are very different and having one at a facility like this goes against all published medical recommendations. "Boutiques" are not held to the same standards as medical centers and there is no way to tell the training of the person administering the ultrasound or the quality and upkeep of the machine. It is best to ask your own OB about getting this type of ultrasound.

I know this will be a very unpopular opinion on this board; however, if you are planning on getting one done at a "boutique", your relatives aren't necessarily wrong in their opinion. I would strongly advise speaking with your OB. At the end of the day, no ones opinion matters but yours (although hopefully you factor in your OBs opinion).

  • Your body, your choice. You should never have to convince or ask anyone for permission to do anything with your body. If you feel it's fine and your doctor supports you go for it! I can't wait to have mine done.
