Bassinet vs family made cradle

Hi Ladies!! I just was wondering if I could get your opinion on
something I've been debating for a while. I had planned on getting a
bassinet for our baby so he/she can sleep in our room for the first few
months. However, my dad was very kind and surprised us with a cradle he
had built himself. It is very beautiful, sturdy, has the correct slat
width, and does not really rock that much. My concern is that since it
is not JPMA certified, we don't know what kinds of stain he used
on the cradle, and there's no real way to lock the rocking motion when
the baby is sleeping if the cradle were to get bumped accidentally or
the baby moved too much. Do you think it would be safe to use the cradle
or is it better to get a bassinet that is certified and just have the
baby nap in the cradle while we are awake so we can watch him/her in it?
I know I may be over-thinking it so I wanted to run it by you all to
get a second opinion. Thank you so much in advance for your input!

  • I would use the cradle in a shared family space. I think it would be safer to keep an eye on baby and also a lovely way to display his craftsmanship when company comes.

  • I'm using the handmade cradle that my husband slept in as a baby. It does lock in place though. I'm not concerned about the stain or design. We just bought the mattress for it and moved it into our bedroom!

Thank you <3 It held up pretty good even though it was stored in my in-laws garage for almost 30 years!

  • I would do what emclaughlin suggested and use it in a common area when you would be able to keep an eye on LO. Or if your concern is the rocking, would you be able to put a few rolled up blankets or something underneath in order to inhibit movement?
  • We have aa rock and play in our bedroom. Our family cradle made for my dad... is 65 years old. Every child in my family slept in it. The cradle is I our basement living area and we will put the baby in it when. We are down there. It has our family tree engraved on the side.
  • I use an heirloom cradle.

mine kind of locks into place to stop the rocking - and I tie a sock around it to secure that thing more.

My FIL refinished the cradle with low voc paint b/c it was scuffed up pretty badly after 30 years in storage.

I inspected all the parts, rails, and bottom - and it is in good shape.  I also got new bedding and a new cradle pad for it.
