Thyroid concerns..?

I have always been borderline hypothyroidism and last week (week 17) I was told there's concerns about my TSH levels and I now need to see an endocrinologist. They called tonight and asked me to go in tomorrow for an appt and stressed it was urgent to get me in. I tend to be more on the holistic side and really am not interested in taking medications unless absolutely necessary. Anyone else encounter these problems? Did anyone not take the recommended medications? I will do what I need to for the health of my baby, but what about the side effects from taking the medications? I have a lot of questions for the specialist tomorrow to make an educated decision but I'm just looking for anyone's personal input who has encountered a similar situation.

Re: Thyroid concerns..?

  • I have hypothyroidism. If left untreated it can cause miscarriage.
  • I have been hypothyroid for 20 years. You have more side effects if you do not take medication to monitor it. You are at high risk for a late miscarriage, preeclampsia, stillbirth, and/or premature birth. I see my endocrinologist every 6 weeks.

  • What was the tsh? I have been on a med for a few years now and I know it's extremely important to keep it under 2.5 while pregnant. A lot of people go on the medication temporarily while pregnant. I've never noticed a single side effect.

  • I only notice side effects when I do not take my medicine. I have been taking Levothyroxin for 15 years and have never had an issue (except when I didn't take the medication). I skipped almost a whole year when I was in college and I didn't have my period for about 10 months, I was tired all the time, cranky, gained a lot of weight, and overall just felt like crap. I didn't put two and two together so I just kept not taking the medication until I went to the doctor and got yelled at.

I only have to have my levels checked every 6 months so it's not that much of a hassle (one extra time to the doctor a year).

I know if you don't treat the problem then you can get an enlarged thyroid or a goiter and then you would have to have your thyroid removed completely (my mom had this happen after about 30 years of having hypothyroidism and taking medication for it, so it's possible you may have issues even if you keep on top of it).

  • My doctor prescribed synthroid and said its a very benign drug with almost no side effects. When she explained the possible risks to the baby without meds vs with it was a no brainer for me.
  • I too usually try the holistic route, but in this case, meds are important. I've been on meds since before pregnancy, and so grateful there is medical help necessary. It's low risk and so important
  • I was hypo before and during my first pregnancy but quit taking the levoxy not long after I had DD. I just forgot and then never went to get a refill. I also started eating a lot better, more organic, and working out.

When I found out I was pregnant this time I got my tsh checked ASAP because I figured my thyroid would be thrown out of whack again, but so far so good- tsh is within normal range. I think my case is unusual but not unheard of.

If I were you I would keep taking the meds throughout your pregnancy.
  • My TSH levels were find first trimester but now into the second trimester they said they were "borderline" but concerning since pregnant (they didn't give me a number). It took almost 2weeks for the doc to refer me so I was wondering how urgent it could be. I've been feeling great, despite tired, which I understand to be common. I'm 18wks, 4days, and feeling baby's movement which is exciting! I will see what the doc says today. I prob will take the medication but I've also begun some meridian stretches and I may undergo accupuncture to address it from the more natural side as well.
  • Have you ever tried accupuncture or meridian stretches? I've started the stretches and will likely have a couple accupuncture sessions as well.
  • It's really a bad situation to be hypo while pregnant. Please do take the meds or your baby could be put at risk. It may be something that sticks around for the rest of your life after pregnancy. That is the most common time for someone to become hypothyroid. I have been for years due to an autoimmune disorder and my meds had to be increased significantly right when I got pregnant as my levels were thrown off, needed to ensure baby was getting enough t3 and t4. Your endocrinologist will be able to go over options with you.

There is a natural medication (porcine thyroid) you may be able to try instead of synthetic if you want, called armour. You may want to ask about that.
  • I have border line hyperthyroidism for being pregnant as well and my midwife put me on medication. I am normally a very holistic person as well which she knows but I decided the risk to the baby if I don't take them outweighs my own risks and personal feelings so in taking them. My midwife is monitoring my levels about every 8 weeks and will continue to do so after the baby is born and we're hoping I'll be able to come off them then, or look into other options.
  • I met with the specialist today and it seems like a no brainer that I need to take the meds for the baby. ESP since the meds are pretty basic and pose no risk to the baby. I plan to stop the meds once baby is born and try to treat w holistic alternatives but for baby, I will do what's needed for now.
