3rd Trimester

This is a pain in the butt - literally!

It seems as though my right sciatic nerve is pinched. I'm 38w5d. Everything I read am I'm told says to stretch, do yoga...but moving around in any way just makes it worse! The pain is only in my bum, but it's so bad I can't even leave the house. Is there ANYTHING anyone can recommend? I'm guessing it's a long shot because it's the way the baby is now positioned in my belly, but I'm desperate for any strange or personal advice that may have worked for you...

  • Try going to the chiropractor
  • Massages and chiropractor has helped me- I have it bad on my left side! 37 weeks here'

  • I understand you. I have it too! not as bad but it's super uncomfortable and it takes time for me to stand up from where I am seating. I work seating down so that does not help. I stretch every morning and walk around at work but it is still there! and I am just basically 30 weeks pregnant. My OB told me that the baby's head is on my left side ( weird position) so that's why it hurts. Good luck!

  • I was just talking about this earlier today.  I have sciatic pain from time to time anyways but it gets really bad when I'm pregnant.  I had it really bad with DD in 2012 and my OB prescribed therapy but I was already high risk and treating every week so I just did not have time to attend therapy.  I just suffered in pain.  It hit me later with her though. I'm 30 weeks now and it hurts so bad.  I do so so during the day when I'm up and about more but at night when I'm settling down for bed.. that's when it's at it's worst.  I can't roll over or get out of bed without help.

The only thing that's helped me is laying on my left side when I'm sleeping and keeping a pillow wedged under my hip and belly.. that seems to alleviate it some and make it a bit easier for me to get out of bed. My only struggle with that is that it also makes my round ligament pain worse in my lower abdomen so then I'm kind of curled up into a ball.

June 3rd cannot get here soon enough.. that's for sure! This is our third and definitely our last!

  • My work chair is super uncomfortable. I got a pool float ring thing from the dollar store and put it in a pillow case. It helps for work. My pain in the butt comes from hemorrhoids though. Isn't being pregnant so much fun?!
  • I had a lot of sciatic nerve pain as well and found a great chiropractor who specializes in prenatal care and have gotten sooooooo much relief.. If that doesn't work, I would suggest talking to your health care provider about physical therapy
  • Thanks all! I will look into a chiropractor. Hopefully I just go into labor sooner rather than later though! I'm told that the pain almost immediately goes away after delivery. Here's hoping that is true!!
  • I HAD THIS LAST WEEK, Just turned 26 weeks....It was jsut on my left upper buttcheeck. Would hurt when I would sit/stand/walk/put on pants/lay on it in bed/turn in bed. I ended up going to a chiropractor. She said it's my SI joint that was misplaced, not sciatica. She adjusted me, and after just one time i feel SO much better. I am going back today for another adjustment.

That's really interesting...maybe that's what's wrong with me! I'm really starting to feel like it's something other than nerve pain. Def want to call a chiro now!
  • I am having the same problem. I haven't done anything about it, but my doctor told me they have a physical therapist who can help. Talk to your doctor about that.
  • I used a great cold back wrap that I sat on as well. Check it out if you are looking for some relief. It did the trick for me.  It still flared up once in a while but pain was not near as bad.  I used it at work a lot as I sat at a desk all day as well as post delivery recovery. Sitting on the cold wrap helped with the swelling.  The gel doesn't move. It is completely durable enough to sit on and help with the pain and inflammation.
    Just a suggestion.

  • Do you have shooting pain down your leg or is it just centralized?  If it's just centralized - stretching is not going to help in most cases if it's actually your sacroiliac joint.

From my personal experience you need to stay off of it.  Try using ice packs throughout the day.  Avoid sleeping on the affected side.  Try to sit in a chair vs. sit on the plush couch.  Don't walk around unless it's necessary (to and from work).  Have someone else go to the grocery store or use the wheelchair!

Also, be careful about lifting anything because you could potentially exacerbate it even more.

  • I used a small heat pad on it at night. Rotated it around the pain every 5 min or so. After a few nights it was gone! Went for a massage and in 10 minutes she aggravated it again so it was back to the heat. But it worked!

  • Thanks everyone for the advice. Turns out it was my SI joint. I delivered my son on April 11th and the pain is still here. Doctor said a chiro can help. Oh the joys!!!
