Ultrasound

Hey ladies mostly (2x 3x moms)I'm a FTM but I was just wondering how many of you recieved a second ultrasound in the third trimester some people told me they don't do that unless something is wrong and some told me they don't see why they wouldn't just to check on little one. Does anyone have a suggestions how I could get. Second ultrasound from my doctors office if they tell me they don't do anymore?

Re: Ultrasound

  • You can request one, but if your OB doesn't think you need it, insurance may not cover it.

You can always go to an outside elective facility, but that's also out of pocket.

  • How much do elective ultrasounds usually run ? Great .. I was going to ask my OB at my appointment today and she doesn't really give off the vibe that she cares about anything I'm saying just nods and smiles (I have a different ob at every appointment only this lady iv had twice) she will for sure let it go in one ear and out the other.
  • No idea...I suggest asking the office staff.
  • I don't get any during the 3rd trimester unless there are problems

  • my elective at 18 weeks was $100. Depending on where you go, just make sure it's a legit place. Do your research. I'd call your nurses line, too and ask about leaving a message for your main OB.

  • I didn't think I was going to get one, but I'm getting one at 32 weeks because I have a fibroid. It's small (never even knew I had it pre pregnancy), but my OB said sometimes they start taking the blood flow from the baby & she just wants to make sure that's not happening. My doctor follows things pretty closely which makes me happy. That's the only reason I'm getting one though.

I have to get another one at 32 weeks becAuse I have low lining placenta that they want to see if it has gone away by then. If we didn't have to I wouldNt elect for one especially if it's not covered. I know they can run pretty high. On our bill ultrasounds are about 600-800 bucks. If your in your 3rd trimester you're so close to meeting your little one anyways so I wouldn't see the reason too if you didn't have to have one
  • Also that 600-800 is before insurance
  • I have military insurance so I'll have to check on how much it would be. I'm just kind of bummed I only have five pictures of her total and there not good at all I guess that's being greedy but I'm too impatient to see how adorably chunky she is. Thanks for all the feedback !

My office does one at 36 weeks, but it's pretty limited. It's really just to check to make sure that the baby's in the right position for birth, no final complications etc.

  • @KonaCoffeeBean I sure hope my office does the same thing
  • They do one at about 33-36 weeks to check size of the baby. If they don't request one. You will pay out of pocket though. Or you can get one from another party.. They usually run 100 and up.

With the military, unless there is a problem they don't do another ultra sound after your 20 week a/s at least from what I've been told/experienced. I had to get a second one at 28 weeks due to having placenta lakes and also to check on a family history problem but that ultra sound I had to get a referral/approval from tricare.

It's sucks but especially with so many women being pregnant in the military system and all I'm sure the insurance wants to cover as little as possible since they have to pay for so many already. But you can always try it never hurts to ask. Also available are the 3d ultra sounds but like the others have said its out of pocket and prices vary.
  • If you have Tricare they will probably not cover another one. My doctors office is so used to Tricare denying Every. Single. Ultrasound. That the finance office gave us paperwork basically telling us in advance that Tricare wouldn't pay for any of them (even the anatomy scan). But, the doctors are so used to Tricare being big deniers that they now know how to write all their reports to make it sound 'medically necessary for the health of the mother and fetus' for the coastie spouses. But yeah, that's why I won't likely have any more, cause its a lot of work for the drs to go thru for us unless there is a truly valid reason. Besides, like another PP has said - you're almost there. Do you really need to subject your baby to additional, unnecessary ultrasound waves just so you can get more pictures?

  • I keep having to go for ultrasounds due to a growing fibroid. I had one at 28 weeks and my next (and hopefully last) one will be at 34 weeks. I had asked if most women, in general, go for third trimester ultrasounds and they said only if there are other issues they need to watch. I believe if you are having a normal/healthy pregnancy they might not do one - unless under the discretion of your doctor.
