Preeclampsia with 1st pregnancy and just found out we are expecting again.

I developed severe preeclampsia at 32 weeks, and my DD was delivered emergency c section weighing 3lb 7oz. We just found out we are expecting baby #2. I am both excited yet scared to death! Anyone else have preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy? Did you have a normal second pregnancy or the same thing happen?? I am trying to think positive here and am constantly praying for a smooth/safe pregnancy for me and baby this time!

Re: Preeclampsia with 1st pregnancy and just found out we are expecting again.

  • I've had 2 friends who did with their firsts and went on to not have it with their second. One had twins with out complications, even.
I had pregnancy induced hypertension and they were constantly testing for pre-e. I made it to 41 weeks on bed rest with my final tests showing I was developing pre-e. I'm also hoping to avoid those issues.
My midwife told me it happens more in first time moms and many go on to not have it again. I'm really hoping that's the case!

  • I'm just like you. I'm worried also. My son was at 32 weeks. I worry about it happening again. I'm just truing to eat right and rest as much as possible.

In my first pregnancy with my now 9yo daughter, I developed HELLP Syndrome which is pretty rare but is an extremely severe illness related to preeclampsia/eclampsia, and my daughter was also born via emergency c-section weighing 4lbs 6. I have since had a son who is now 3 and I had no complications with that pregnancy at all. In fact, he was so comfortable they had to do a c section to get him out at 9lbs 2 because I wasn't dilating at all! My daughter was so weak at birth she scored low on her apgars and wasn't able to nurse (now she is healthy and active with no issues) and my son was born fat and healthy and hungry. Every pregnancy is different, so try not to worry, but pay attention to your body and don't just assume it's a symptom of pregnancy if things do change. Always feel comfortable asking your doctor about any little thing, that's what they are there for.
  • Hello!  My story is similar - I developed severe pre-eclampsia which led to HELLP Syndrome and my daughter was born at 33 weeks, weighing 3 lbs 4 oz.  She's a totally healthy (just petite!) 18 month old now and we are going to start trying for baby #2 very soon.  I'm also terrified but I really want my daughter to have a sibling and my doctor has been very encouraging about going ahead with a second pregnancy.

Reading MrsSchwarz's story above makes me feel so much better!  I also follow a couple of boards on Facebook - "What the HELLP" and "Preeclampsia Foundation Official Site".  On those pages, I've seen tons of uplifting stories from other moms who have suffered pre-e and/or HELLP and have gone on to have totally healthy 2nd and 3rd pregnancies!

When is your due date?  Has your doctor given you any additional instructions to avoid pre-e this time?  I've heard that taking aspirin has shown to be helpful.
  • I had pre-e and hellp syndrome at the end of my first! I'm concerned that I will have similar issues but doing everything I can to prevent it. Hopefully it pays off! Good luck!
  • I also had pre-e with my first and this time they are making me take more test. I had to collect my pee for 24 hours and they did some test on it.
  • I had very early pre-e with my son but he ended up coming at 35 weeks of his own accord.  I had some mild blood pressure issues with my second but never as bad as with my son.  A good friend of ours just had a healthy full term baby after having her first at 27 weeks due to severe pre-e.

Glad to see this thread, I have the same questions. I had severe pre-e at 34 weeks and had to have an emergency c-section with general anesthesia (due to platelet count). My son was fine thankfully but I am worried about #2.
