Sudden hot flash/dizzy/light headed...

Hey all...9w5d here FTM and looking for some reassurance. This afternoon while waiting in the lobby of a restaurant I had a sudden hot flash. Basically I felt overheated out of nowhere and started sweating like crazy. Almost immediately I felt dizzy and light headed and had to sit down. I ripped off my jacket & scarf and chugged a glass of ice water but couldn't event have a conversation with my husband because I felt like I was going to faint. 20 mins later i'm covered in goosebumps and had chills instead. We came home, I buried myself under blankets, and I slept for 2 hours. Now i'm feeling fine but a little out of it still.

I read that hot flashes can be normal....has anyone else gone through this? I'm already anxious and now concerned about the baby. Should I go to the hospital? ignore it?

Thanks to any input you might have!

  • I've had those before, I read somewhere is can be related to a drop or spike in blood sugar or pressure !

  • This has been happening to me after I wake up in the morning while I am in the shower. I have to sit down immediately and turn the water to cold and wait for it to go away. Usually only takes a minute or two. I think I get too hot in my sleep and then jump in a hot shower and it is too much for my body.

It sounds like low blood sugar to me. Next time it happens, try having a glass of juice rather than water. If it doesn't help, you can rule out a drop in blood sugar.
  • I had the same problem when I was pregnant with my son. It was so bad I would stick my head in the freezer and just sit there lol. Try eating little snacks all day. Keep a orange or something in your purse. I carry a bag of sliced apples with me everywhere. The life of a pregnant person smh.
  • This happened to me with DD and now with this LO as well. Was the place hot? Sometimes that triggers tj for me. My OB sent me to a cardiologist they did an EKG and echo and both were fine. Ultimate diagnosis- hormonal. Just bring it up to your OB.
  • This has been happening to me pretty frequently (overheating, shortness of breath, feeling faint) especially when it's warm and/or I have to stand for a period of time (in the shower, on a crowded subway, etc.). Doctor advised that it was due to the hormonal swings and not to worry....but still very uncomfortable and a little scary when it's happening!
  • I get this too. Mine is low blood sugar. My nurse told me to keep a snack with me at all times and that should help. Hope you figure out what helps.
  • I got it really bad, I couldnt see properly, my vision was tunneled and blurry I was bumping into stuff getting to a chair, extremely sweaty, went to the doctor about and hour or so later, all my obs were fine... I think it has something to do with blood sugar
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I've had a similar issue on and off for the last 15 years or so both pregnant and not, but it's come back badly with this pregnancy. Happens to me in the crowded subway. I've had to ask for a seat or even get off of the train many mornings lately to avoid passing out cold (which I actually did on the train years ago). My primary care doc calls it vasovagal syncope, which sounds terrible but is really a very common human reaction. Some people have this reaction at the sight of blood, but for me it's standing in a hot, crowded space. Sometimes tensing my leg muscles helps. Also having a cold bottle of water with me. Anyway, no fun! Hope your incident was a one-timer.
