Post Partum Lower Back Pain??

I am three weeks post partum and I am have excruciating back pain. I have tried everything from IB profin to Tylonol 3 the hospital gave me. I have no relief. Heat pad, cold pad... I feel I've tried it all. It's to the point where it hurts to carry my DD around... She's only 7lbs 11oz! I had such a speedy recovery from labor that I'm confused as to why this pain came out of no where. Any remedies? Or has anyone else experienced this?

Re: Post Partum Lower Back Pain??

  • Did you get an epidural? I'm only 2 days postpartum, but I've noticed that my back feels pretty tight and slightly painful as well.

  • I did but no pain until 3 days ago... Not sure if that's the culprit or not. My back felt tender after labor but no pain
  • I didn't have an epi this time, but last time I did, and I had some pretty shitty back pain. It didn't start until a couple of weeks pp either. I bet that's what it is.

  • Hmm...I also just started noticing lower back pain this morning. I'm 6 days PP and also had an epi. Currently taking 600 mg of ibiprofen every 6 hours but may start taking every 4-5 hours today.
  • @TwinsCitiesMomma I would recommend, rather than increasing the frequency of the ibuprofen (you really are already at the max daily dose), add Tylenol instead (Max 2 gm per 24 hrs, so if extra strength 500 mg, 2 tabs every 6 hours). You can alternate them so that you're taking ibuprofen or Tylenol every three hours. That is, as long as you have no reason that Tylenol would need to be avoided.
  • Hate to be the bearer of bad news but it never gets better!!
I had my first son 4 years ago and have had the worst back since.
Even doing simple tasks is painful.
I've had many scans done and I've never been able to find out what's happening. I've just had my third baby and I swear it gets worse with each one I've had. I didn't have an epidural so that's not the reason for me.
I hope your case isn't like mine and if manages to go away with time :)
  • @skittkle Have you ever had physical therapy for it? Mostly chronic back pain is related to muscle rather than bone or nerve issues. It would not show up on scans at all. And after nine months of carrying a growing baby plus the time afterwards carrying a growing infant and toddler, the muscles around the spine can get very strained. Hope you can find a solution... Chronic back pain is never fun!

Thanks! Never thought of that. Would much rather add tylenol than take more ibuprofen.
  • I had phatom pain after my daughters epidural. They hit a nerve when trying to do so. That i ended up not getting it because i wanted it out. Also i didnt want it in the first place. It was opted due to puppps and the stress from itching made it impossible to dilated they wanted to numb me waist down.
  • I had the epi and I just started feeling the pain today too it it's intense
  • I find my back is always killing pp mostly from nursing and sitting in funny positions and bent over all the time when I am nursing. I always do stretches and lay flat in my back for a few minutes each night to help with this...
