My girl turned into a boy!!! I think..

let me start out by saying I'm sorry. I havnt been to active on this board. Mostly lurking. But I would really appreciate some advice, as I'm going through a whirl wind of emotions and I have no idea what to do!
When I was 19 weeks along I had my anatomy scan that determined baby was a girl! And while I know ultrasounds can't be 100% correct in determining sex, the tech specifically said to me "I am a hundred percent certain", even though I'm sure they are not aloud to say that.
Fast forward through the next couple months I had 4 extra ultrasounds for various reasons.(brain cyst, enlarged kidneys, slipped and fell, high blood pressure) I had my last ultrasound 3 days ago at 32 weeks to once again check on the enlarged kidneys and while she was doing that I guess she decided to check the sex because I was talking about it being a baby girl. Well according to her my baby's area most definitely looks like a baby boy! She showed me. It look like two very round things with a little thing sticking up in between. Now I'm no professional and I would take her word over my own thoughts but is there any chance It could have just been a very swollen little girl?
I have my next doctor appointment on Monday so I will be talking to her about it. But I have a 4 year old little boy at home that we've spent the last 3 months getting prepared to meet his baby sister! He is so excited. And while I could care less what sex the baby is. It breaks my heart thinking about how we are going to tell him. I know he's a kid and he'll get over it but I'm seriously at a loss for words and I don't know what to do.
I am also very frustrated with the ultrasound tech that originally had said she was 100% sure. Can you really mistaken boy parts for girl parts and be that certain? What would you do?

I'm sorry this has got to be frustrating! At my first ultrasound, the tech said "some techs will say it's a girl just because they see and absence of boy parts (or can't see them) but I only say girl if I can see girl parts." So possibly the first tech didn't see anything boy initially so she just went with girl. That's frustrating tho but I know it still happens pretty frequently:(

I've heard of ppl being told the wrong sex during the anatomy scan. I'm sure it's difficult to switch gears. Definitely speak to your doctor about it and wait to tell your son until you can confirm for sure. But from what you describe of you last US it definitely is a boy. I would google some ways to break the news to your little one in a constructive and easy to understand manner. You will probably be able to find some blogs posted by moms and dads that have gone through it before. Good luck!

Aw. I'm sure he will be just as, if not more excited about a little brother. My husband has a boy and a girl from a previous marriage and when preparing them for their new sibling the boy said I'll be happy if it's a boy and the girl hoped for a girl. That is very tough thinking you're having a girl all this time. I'm sorry you're going through this. Also it's unprofessional to guarantee certainty if you don't know what your talking about, I'd be so mad.

I went for an elective US at 17 wks and then around 20 wks for anatomy scan. They both showed the same parts. A baby boy. But before having the elective US done, I googled and read about it and the parts can easily be mistaken depending on positioning and gestational age!

My tech told us that when they see boy parts it's pretty certain it's a boy, but when it comes to identifying a girl, there's always a chance they are wrong because they could just be missing the boy parts or not seeing them clearly...I would probably start telling your son now that it could be a big or girl and that you don't know what it is and that is going to be a surprise. Just tell him you thought it was a girl but it might be a boy and you won't find out until they are born.

Thank you all I really appreciate it. I had tried to google about situations like this but most were from people who were expecting there first child. As annoying as the situation is I know at least the babe is healthy and well he/she will have quite the storey to tell

. And as for my son i know he will except a brother or sister with open arms. The pregnancy hormones aren't making it very easy on me though haha.

with my first baby my us tech told me for all three scans its a boy. On D day a baby girl was born. Needless to say wewewe're all shocked in the delivery room. She wore blue, black, and red headbands for her first 0-3 months because she had all boy clothes

Ultrasound mistakes do happen. My own doctor said the ONE time she was wrong, it was with her sister-in-law! She's left it up to the ultrasound techs since then.

Your son will get over it - he's only 4. Just think of what fun those little boys will have together!

I almost left my anatomy scan thinking my baby was a girl. After the tech checked kidneys, she went back and sure enough...BOY!

The tech can't say 100% girl what the heck? I'm pretty sure it's not allowed as when I did my 19 week he couldn't see boy parts and said 80% chance it's a girl so I waited before buying anything then did a 3d ultrasound at 30 weeks and asked her if she could double check the sex. She had a look and even I could tell 100% she was a girl but she still said "look it is very obvious it's a girl but I'm still only allowed to say 99.99999999%" I think you most likely have a boy as I heard once they say boy that far along it is very unlikely to be wrong but your son would probably be even more excited so don't worry too much

Oh goodness!!! That is one of my fears especially since the nursery is already painted pink and gold. I saw this cute video of a family who was expecting a girl and had a boy, and they just let grandma change the diaper to find out. lol with your son I agree maybe waiting till the baby is here to explain. But maybe hinting towards it. Like saying, "Hey, if you had a brother that would be fun too."

I'm sorry you are going through so many health issues. The sex thing is annoying but not the end of the world. As long as he/she is healthy right. I couldn't wait if I were you so I would pay the $50 or so for an elective us. They have places all over and you could get in in the next few days. Good luck.

Didn't anyone have the down syndrome blood test at 12 weeks. It tells the sex of the baby with a 99.9% accuracy rate.

People only do that test if they have reason to such as being over 35 yrs or genetics as it can cause miscarriage

During my first pregnancy I was informed that I was having a girl at 20 weeks. At 30 when I went in for an elective 3D ultrasound we were most definitely having a boy. I told my husband this time that if they told me I was having a girl I would still wait to shop. I was worried the same thing would happen again but this time it has been a boy since 20 weeks

. It is really challenging to completely switch gears. In the end a healthy baby is what I wanted but just spending 2+ months preping for a girl only to have to switch it up is challenging!!!

Erm? Panorama/Harmony testing is done with a blood test from your arm. It does not cause a miscarriage. But, yes, you can get the gender checked then as well, I did. (I'm old.)

Not all insurances cover it either. I'm in my 40s. My MFM doc said it's not the test they use bc of this. They did diff blood tests and looked at the markers. I had planned to have an elective us at 16 weeks like I did with dd but never got around to it. I see MFM every month so they confirm boy each time.

What? They can check the sex with just a blood test I never heard that? I thought it was only the one where they put the needle in your stomach that determines the sex. All well learn everything on here

I had the blood test for downs and mine didn't come with gender results.

I'm over 40 and had a screening for genetic issues at 12 weeks. They called me to tell me the good news and then asked if I wanted to know gender. I was ecstatic! Still, people say " you are carrying like a boy"

I have always had the Down's syndrome blood test. It's rountine in my OB office no matter your age. Mine did not come with the gender though.

It's probably a boy. Many times boys can appear as girls that early.

I am expecting a 2nd boy based on 19/20 week scan - but it was around Cmas so we had the tech write it on a paper and then we made it into a Cmas gift. We were/are thrilled to give our first son a brother - but when I had an unplanned US a few weeks ago (30 weeks?) I told them that I never got to see "the parts" since it was a surprise, and asked for a shot... but she couldn't see anything. Even though she didn't say anything about it being a girl and blamed it on position, there is a part of me that thinks "what if it is a girl"... bc I have everything ready for a BOY! LOL - i guess we will know in 4.5 weeks for sure - and I am still buying boy stuff, but the question has come to mind a few times!

IPS (ISP?) screening also involves blood work, and tests for Down's, but is not the same or as early as Harmony or Panorama, which is a different full panel genetic test that tests for about a gagillion other things. They will ask you if you want to know the gender for those. The IPS one doesn't test for that - it looks at proteins I think, rather than gene fragments.

I did this test too, so I've known gender since 10 weeks. I tried to get ultrasound tech to confirm, but she wouldn't even guess bc she said other test was more accurate.

I've heard of this happening more and more lately and it's making me really nervous! I may end up asking for another ultrasound just to put my mind at ease!

The blood test many are referring to is new. It is called Harmony Prenatal test or MaterniT21. It is not the typical blood work. It takes a blood sample from the mom @ 12 weeks. From the blood, they can get the baby's DNA. they test for abnormalities and can also identify gender. Completely safe for both mom and baby.

I was able to get it done and my insurance covered it. Please note.... I am over 35. Not sure if that is why insurance covered it or because they just do.

As far as telling your son of a brother or sister, I would tell him the benefits of both and the benefits of being a big brother. Hopefully once the baby is here he wont care if the baby is boy or girl.
