I tried to rest a lot and move a lot, if that make sense, take turns doing both. I was in labor at night, finally went when they were about 4 mins apart.
I labored at home for 26 hours before heading to the hospital. While at home I spent a lot of time on my exercise ball, going for walks, and finally after getting frustrated that my contractions weren't at regular intervals I got in my "warm" tub (we turned the hot tub way down so it was like a bath. Also note that I had not lost my mucus plug nor had my water broke, if that were the case I would not have done this step). This is what brought the contractions on faster and longer. I hopped in the shower and this continued to move labor to the point we would be admitted to the hospital.
I'm worried about the car ride being really uncomfortable - anyone have thoughts/comments about that? I don't want to jump the gun and get to the hospital way too early, but if the contractions are so strong I need to be in the shower at home, how terrible is it going to be sitting in one position for 30 min?

It sucks. It's painful and you feel like you would rather walk there than ride in a bumpy car.
True story : when I was having contractions every 3 minutes I left for the hospital. My mom stopped at a stop sign... GOT OUT THE CAR to check to see if the tire was low. I wanted to strangle her. I didn't care if she was riding on rims... I needed to get to the hospital ( at this point it was about 5 mins away) I get there and find out I'm 8 cm. I delivered my daughter as my DH walked in to meet Me. ** and that women wanted to check a tire lol

It's not the most pleasant thing. Just practice some breathing techniques, listen to some music and try to relax. This may be obvious, but you won't be in pain btwn contractions, so the ENTIRE ride won't suck. Lol. I also sat on a beach towel in case my water broke. I did not want DH to have to clean up that mess later.
I'm new to this, but what does DH stand for? Something husband I'm assuming.
DH = Dear Husband
Also, DS - dear son DD - dear daughter LO - little one M/F IL - mother / father in law

You'll be tempted to go in, but a first time labor can last an eternity. Just remember there can be no intervention if you're not in the hospital. I was ready to go in at 5am but luckily my husband talked me into staying home. We went in at 1pm, I was dilated to 5 at that time, and she was born at 6:18 pm.
With my son, I timed my contractions and kept waiting for them to be 5 minutes apart, but they were never consistent, 7 min, then 10, then 7. So we waited and waited. The pain was bearable but I finally told my husband that we should get checked out. I was positive that they would send me home. The car ride was awful, we only lived 15 minutes from the hospital. My poor husband wanted to drop me off at the door but I did not want to be left alone so we parked and walked to L&D. I got checked and was at an 8! I was shocked and then I got excited and scared. Turns out that my contractions were piggy backing off of each other and that's why I wasn't able to time them correctly.
My advice is to wait as long as you can if that's what your comfortable doing. Just listen to your body and you'll be fine.
