Registry Question

So my DH and I went to do our registry today at Buy Buy Baby and I was SO overwhelmed! SO much stuff and I didn't know what we needed and what we didn't. I also was confused about quantity. The best advice about this stuff comes from second time moms so I'm asking: Would you say things like bottle warmers, wipe warmers, bottle steralizers etc are needed? Do you register for things they will need as babies or things they will need during that first year such as teething rings, toys, plates, cups, etc? Any products that you totally loved or hated? How many bibs, blankets, and outfits should we ask for? What about burp pads? Need them or use something else? Definitely could use some help here! Any input would be appreciated :)

  • @Miz_Liz Thank you SO much! This was really helpful! I'll definitely look up those things. They did not :( What about baby monitors? Do you prefer the ones that are strictly audio or the video ones?
  • I really liked the trimmer ripper bibs. They are plastic, so they wipe down easily, but they have a pocket that catches food as it falls down the bib. I really loved my baby food maker. Bottle warmer was useful, sterilizer is not, and the wipe warmers just dry out the wipes. DS liked the warm wipes better than cold for 2 or 3 months, then didn't care at all. A humidifier is nice in the nursery. I also really liked the video monitor rather than just audio. I wouldn't register for many receiving blankets. We got more than we used. Literally, never unwrapped some. Clothes tend to be the same way, especially if you're having a Girl, and you don't really know what size they will be in for each season. Newborn hats are nice. I didn't use my pack n' play, loved the baby carrier and also suggest a big hiking carrier if you are outdoor types. The baby play mat is nice, a bumbo seat is great, bedding, nursing supplies, a drying rack for bottles, Dr. __ (I forget the name) bottles, plates, silverware, nuk Skippy cups - they do a good job of not spilling but come apart enough to clean nicely. Finally, the swaddlers with Velcro.
    Have fun!
  • I agree a humidifier is clutch. I also have and LOVE my video monitor - I like to be able to physically see him if I want to (the one we have allows you to talk to the baby too, although we don't use that now, would freak him out). I liked bibs with snaps vs. velcro. Be careful with the Bumbo though, that had a recall on it, I never used one so can't speak to how they are. Completely agree a drying rack for bottles and also a dishwasher caddy that you can put the nipples, etc. in to wash them - and a bottle brush. I would also get some sort of bouncer for the baby once they get a little older and a "gym" that they can lay on the floor and play with the toys on (ours came with a pillow for tummy time). Oh and a Boppy (and covers) - if you have a two story house I would register for two, one for upstairs and one for downstairs, sooo much easier than lugging it up and down stairs at night/mornings, etc. I could go on and on....tub, rectal thermometer, Triple Paste is my absolute FAVORITE diaper rash cream, it is pricer, but seriously the best we found. If you live in a buggy area, a net thing to go over your stroller is really nice for when baby is too little to swat bugs away. A mirror for your car so that you can see baby and they can see you is awesome, they make some that play music and light up and come with a remote control so that you can turn it on when you need it. A car seat mat for under your car seat is nice for catching stuff and protecting your seats.
  • I loved the aden and Anais swaddles. They're huge and can be used for anything. They were easier for me to swaddle than using the ones with Velcro. And, they don't out grow them like the others and have to rebuy more. I had six for DS and he still uses one at night to sleep. It's softer than a sheet, and not hot like other blankets.

LOTS of burp cloths. We had 12 and needed ALL of them.

Two crib sheets, and a white noise machine was nice

A crib rail protector for when LO is teething is nice too. You won't need it for a while, but it was one of those things I wished I had had early.

A few things of shampoo. We got three big ones and have only had to buy more ONCE (DS is 19 mo).

We didn't use any of the bottle stuff bc we EBF. That being said, I loved my drying rack. The one that looks like grass. I could fit a ton on it and lots of awkward shaped things like pump parts.

  • Ftm here-
This is the first I've heard about using humidifiers in the nursery. How come?
  • Lucie's list was very helpful when setting up my registry. Highly recommend it!

Babies get stuffy often, keeping some moisture in the air can help them breath easier.
  • I either did not register for or often times ended up returning the items that I wanted to try to see if DD would like.

I wouldn't register for tons of bottles, pacifiers, teethers, sippy cups, etc because I ended up trying a few before figuring out what DD took to.  I would focus on the blankets, sheets, changing table covers, burp clothes, mattress pad, and the go to bigger items (swing, jumperoo, bouncy seat, pack and play, rock n play, high chair, nursing pillow, bumbo seat, monitor) that you know you will need.  Also do the few things that you would never buy yourself, but want.

  • I never used a wipe warmer, bottle warmer, or sterlizer! Lol who has time for that?

I also never really used burp cloths.. My dd was breastfed and we hardly ever dealt with spit up.. Maybe once? That was it.

I did use the heck out of a swing, bouncer, pack n play, my ergo carrier(I see this as a must have! She's 2 and it's still a must have lol. Luckily I have 2 carriers!), my boppy pillow, nipple cream, binkies, and a play "gym" mat.

I'd also suggest reusable breastpads too if you plan on breastfeeding.. I never found a disposable brand that didn't make my nipples itch like a mofo!!

I only used dr Browns bottles as well.. I tried several other brands and I ended up giving them away. Hated it! I did get a playtex bottle that's in a v shape so I could feed on road trips with ease. (My DH was driving, just to clarify!!)

Know what my registry consists of?
    A car seat,
A double stroller (mostly this is so me and DH could locate it easily lol we plan on purchasing it ourselves.. A bob! )
    Cloth diapers
Aden and andis bamboo swaddle blankets (mostly for a cover blanket that's light!)
    New doctor Browns bottles
    Swing
    Bouncer

And that's it.. And I plan on buying several items on that list myself. I just am a huge list person! In fact o haven't even shared my registry with anyone lol!!
  • If you are a FTM, I also suggest a glider/rocker for you ❤️ I still have mine from my DD.. Must have for those late night nursing sessions!
  • We didn't register for any clothes.. people will buy them regardless. We did however register for sleep sacks!
  • My favorite baby item is the fischer price rock and play...son slept SO well in it and was cuddled and SO easy to transport!
