Progesterone injections

Ever since the 16 week mark I've had to get a weekly progesterone shot in my butt to prevent preterm labor. They are no fun and I dread Mondays now because of it. The burning and swelling is crazy.

I used to put an ice pack on it or take a Tylenol if it got really bad but I've gotten used to it.

Anyone else have to do this?

Re: Progesterone injections

  • I had to do those for one of my IVF cycles daily.  The tip that I got was after the shot to walk for 10-15 min to keep the muscle warm and moving.  that helped me from getting huge painful knots.  Hope that helps!

I had to give myself daily progesterone injections in the muscle. My trick was leaning my opposite hip against the counter with the foot of that leg resting bent with no weight on it. Only once got a knot.
  • @lola2bee I wish I could walk around but the clinic has a policy that I have to sit in the waiting room for 10 minutes after the injection in case I have a reaction. Thank God I only have 5 left!

I get a milkshake afterwards as a reward. :) That always makes me feel better! lol
  • @rosannewild Sometimes the nurse that does it makes it hurt so bad. I used to wish I could do it myself.

The first 5 weeks were horrible. Now it's not so bad and the burning and swelling only lasts a day at most.

I'll ask the nurse if we can try that trick tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks.
  • I take the pill version which i love
  • I've had to take them too I rub the area after for about 5 minutes and try to get them as early in the day as possible so I can walk the soreness out but so far they haven't been that bad. The last 2 stung more when the needle first went in but i figured it was just my butt getting tough from all of the shots. Make sure they are using a deep enough shot. They are suppose to be given deep I don't have much meat on my backside and my nurse still had to use an inch and a half long needle.
